Strength:

Very sharp pictures, lightweight, hand holdable and fun to use

Weakness:

f/5.6 auto focus is lost with 1.4x and 2x teleconvertors

I purchased this lens on Arthur Morris's rcomendation that this was his favorite "toy lens". I can not agree more. I have taken very sharp images of birds and widlife while hand holding this lens. Very light weight, hand holdable and very fast to auto focus with my new Elan 7E.

Model Reviewed: EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

Strength:

Very sharp and lightweight. Fast focusing

Weakness:

Maximum aperture only 5.6 When using a 1.4X or 2X converter you will have to manually focus with most cameras. 5.6 aperture makes viewfinder image a little dark.

Great telephoto lens.Sharp and contrasty images. Very well built. Light color paint helps control thermal expansion in bright sunlight. Comes with tripod coller and nice case. Much more compact to carry than the 400 F2.8L

Model Reviewed: EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

Strength:

Very solid construction; Superb optics; Lightweight; Built in lens hood and locking; Removable tripod mount

Weakness:

Minimum focusing distance; no Image Stabilization

The 400mm/5.6L is an excellent lens for the budget minded amateur/professional person looking for a telephoto. Its lightweight and solid construction make it ideal for backpacking and handheld nature photography. It is adaptive to outdoor sports as well, such as youth soccer/football/baseball. Although autofocus is lost, it is compatible with the Canon 1.4x to make it a 560mm/f8 and the Canon 2x to make it an 800mm/f11. At f5.6 it is a stop to slow for professional sports photography. Bottom Line - This is an excellent, all-around telephoto lens at a great price!
