outstanding optical performance
Weakness:
white colour may be scratched quite easily ... simply my best Minolta lens (and I have almost everything with exception of the 4/600mm), outstanding optical quality, sharp, excellent contrast, no reflexes even under worst conditions. And: It's light ;-) My opinion after 16 years of using it: BUY IT IF YOU CAN - you'll never regret! Strength:
1. Super sharp even wide open. I tested this by blow up the wide open slide on the wall. 2. Light weight. 3. Very fast AF on Dynax 5. Never hunting. 4. Natural color. 5. Strong metal built. 6. Convenient build-in hood.
Weakness:
1. No tripod allowed. 2. The white paint on the lens get scratch easily and make the lens looks very old. The ex-owner has removed all the paint from the lens. It is sliver now. My friends are very surprised by the photos I took. They are very sharp, colorful and no handshake. They all are saying that I am very professional. Customer Service Good at Hong Kong. No tripod collar This was my first fixed focal length telephoto lens. I''ve always had zooms in the past because of their range but you definatly sacrifice something when comparing image quality to one of these fast APO fixed lenses. I''m very happy with the build quality, sharpness, balance and AF speed. I primarily use this lens for shooting 220 MPH Indy Cars and with the 1.4x APO converter, it''s a nice affordable alternative to the 300mm f2.8 APO lens offered my Minolta for $3000+. Sharp, fast, no noticable distortion at the corners when wide open, OK AF speed, rugged body, MF good feel
Weakness:
No hypersonic motor. Minolta''s lagging. Has tendency to seek when used with a teleconvertor. First introduction to fixed telephoto lenses. At first, I was a little leary at the high price, but you definitely get what you paid for. No disappointment at all. Sharp! Sturdy and rugged body, a little heavy and bulky when hiking with it, AF speed decent on MAxxum 7 but not when used with teleconvertor. When used with teleconvertor, has tendency to seek. Extremely good optics and excellent focusing speed.
Weakness:
No macro function is available (a resonable compromise for its excellent optics) The lens is extremely sharp edge to edge with excellent flare control. No distortion is perceivable. This is the fastest Minolta AF lens I have ever used. It is excellent for portrait and wildlife alike. I have excellent balance with my 800si camera. Strength:
This is one of the sharpest lenses that I have ever used. It is as sharp as my 100mm macro, both subjectively and confirmed by resolution testing. Color rendition is superb. Contrast is excellent while retaining separation subtleties of the image. Focusing is quite fast especially with the Maxxdum 9. It did a great job recently at the Manhatten Beach bicycle Grand Prix. Heavy duty construction.
Weakness:
The manual focus cover doesn't always stay in place. What a great lense! This lense is always in my camera bag even if I am traveling light. Similar Products Used: Mostly 80-200 zooms |
