    Strength:

Extremely sharp from f 2.4 and onwards. A very well built lens.

    Weakness:

A little soft at wide open, but this is expected and no surprise.

If you need a really fast normal lens, this is the best Minolta has to offer. Buy it and try it, you will be amazed by the quility of the retults.

Just bought the 50mm f1.4 off eBay and compared the sharpness to my 50mm f1.7 and my consumer zoom at 28-80mm and high quality zoom at 28-85mm both zoomed at 50mm. I took the pictures and recorded the results on notepad. I mixed the pictures up (they had frame stamps on the back) and picked out the best images out of around 5 various scenes thoughout the city. Anyhow, in each test I was able to pick out the the 50mm f1.4 as the best image. It was really difficult to pick it apart from the 50mm f1.7 but for some reason out of 5 various scenes, I picked the f1.4 as the winner 5 times. The zooms were easy to differentiate especially at the edges. But the 28-85 (no longer made) beat out my new 28-80mm consumer zoom which came in last.

    Strength:

Great sharpness, quick autofocus, perfect color, light weight, lots more...

    Weakness:

none, except maybe that you have to move your feet to compose without a zoom lens.

I agree with all the other positive comments listed above and just wanted to add one other point for those of you considering this lens. I bought this lens as an answer to low-light autofocus problems with my camera. It is great for that purpose!! The f/1.4 lens allows 8 times as much light as my zoom lenses that primarily start around f/4.0. This is a godsend when shooting in low light light wedding receptions, theater performances, etc... Even if you use flash and stop down a bit for the shot, this lens will make sure you get the focus dead on first.

This is a fine general purpose lens. It should prove more than adequate for taking full advantage of the 35mm format.

This is most appreciated lens by the expert photographers all around the world. It has focal length of human eye. No curves, no distortion, no vignetting and compression. It offers
natural colours equivalent to human eye. If love photography buy this lens. Buying this lens means buy a human eye. Shoot things the way they look. All-purpose photography lens. I took shot of trees in summer. The picture came so sharp and detailed that I can count every single leaf in the picture and size of the photograph was 4X6!

Model Reviewed: AF 50mm f/1.4 Maxxum

    Strength:

    sharp

    Weakness:

Well, it's as flexible as you expect for a fixed length lens.

A much better lens than either the 70-210 or the 28-80, but of course that's not very surprising, it is a fixed length lens.

I don't use it much, except in places where the 50MM length is pretty nice AND I'm wanting a really sharp picture. Then it's awfully nice to have. It's also handy for those birthday parties where somebody hates flash ;_) That and some NHG2-800, that is.
