This Minolta MD 50 mm 1,7 lens is very sharp and make fantastic prints with the delicate Fuji reala films. Its darn close to my No 1 and 2s,and 3s,; Nikon Lens 50 mm 1,8 short barrel,Nokton 50 mm 1,5 (wauw) and a russian Jupiter lens i got. Its worth to use and you wont regret this at all,go and find a used Minolta X 100 slr and a couple of MD lenses; maybe the Lovely little babe, 45 mm pancake and you will for ever go Minolta (now konica HUH=??).. its a good lens

Great product, I didn't do a lot of photography yet with my new SLR (Minolta Maxxum 4) but I got some really great pictures with 50mm lense. Picture is very sharp, no distortion. Very useful when there is not enough light.

Strength:

Picture quality, fast speed with no distortion at maximum apeture

Weakness:

the fixed 50mm length sometimes is niether wide nor tele enough, oh! where is the zoom with these optics and speed?

After getting a very cheap deal on a manual minolta camera set with Tamron zoom lenses, I had the opportunity to buy this excellent lens. It was a virtual steal considering that I now only use this lens for everything. I was first excited with the fast speed, and that has helped alot in using very slow iso film, such as ektar 25, to create some amazing shots. All around the colour, crispness, contrast, everything from the optics of this lens, has give me my best photo's without a doubt. IF you can get one, even if its used, get it!

Strength:

Affordable
Lightweight
Fast
Great Optical Quality
It's a manual focus prime lens... what more could you want?

Weakness:

None

It's lightweight, affordable, has a good front filter size (49mm) and produces great results. If like me you don't tend to like zoom lenses, it's an ideal lens to have in your kit. I typically take this, my 50mm f2 with a 2x converter, and a 24mm f2.8 lens with me everywhere... the three focal lengths of 24, 50 and 100 cover 95% of the shots I take.
The maximum aperture of f1.7 means it's a good lens to use in low light, while being much cheaper and lighter than an f1.4... not that you can get hold of these new now. Forget buying a cheap 35-70 or 28-70 zoom, the optical quality and small apertures will hinder your creativity. Get one of these instead!
All in all, the ideal lens if you have an MD camera... or 4! :-)

I was feeling really uncomfortable using and focusing with the noname 28-70 (big, heavy, dark viewfinder, not easy to focus with precission), and after reading the advantadges of a 50 mm lens, i searched for it and finally bought it.

The best deal i've made. At the store i got impressed by the suddenly clear viewfinder and how tiny and easy to focus the lens was (i was so impressed that i forgot to look for fungus, but well, i won't forgot it anymore :P).

BTW, it has converted in the new "body cap" for my x370. This lens is so light, cheap and sharp that i rarely use the zoom anymore. If you don't shoot a lot in dark light conditions i think you shouldn't pay 3 times the money for the 50 1.4, wich is heavier and bigger also.

I became really astonished when i used the lens in combination with Fuji Reala, viewing results from the zoom, the 50 and the 135 (which i like a lot too), i really think the zoom has no much future with me...

Last, a tiny lens is very useful if you don't like to attract eyes of people to your camera like insects to an UV light.

Also, the fungus is only at the borders, meaning it would only show using 1.7 or 2.8 apertures, that i rarely use. If fungus eats the center of the lens i'll get another used one (w/o fungus if it's possible :) and i'll keep the other one as a 50 mm soft focus :)).
