Mamiya 500mm f/6 APO RZ Lens 35mm Primes

Mamiya 500mm f/6 APO RZ Lens 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

The 500mm f/6 APO is the longest of Mamiyas 6x7cm format APO series lenses. It utilizes computer-aided design and Mamiyas ultra-low dispersion glass for elimination of chromatic abberation. The extensive use of low dispersion glass makes APO lenses heavier and much more costly than standard design telephoto lenses.

Strength:

Super sharp, 6x7 format can render detail far more than just about anything digital. Capable of super sharp 30x40 inch prints, far better than anything a 35mm format DSLR can dish up. Built like a tank, all metal construction. Supplied with a functional lens hood. Flash sync at all shutter speeds. Works extremely well with extension tubes with one drawback (see weaknesses) Gets many wows from onlookers, esp. with the extension tubes and lens hood attached. No too heavy at 5 pounds. Some full-frame dslr bodies weigh as much with a small lens attached.

Weakness:

Works extremely well with extension tubes but the lens bracket will not work. I made a extendable bracket. It seems that a 6 grand price tag (new) could accomodate a better bracket. I also had to make my own arca-swiss type plate to use it with a ballhead. The factory supplied lens bracket is somewhat weak IMO and takes a few seconds to settle down after the mirror is raised. 105mm filter size makes for some expensive filters. Spent over 100 dollars on a UV filter and 150 on a polarizer. Still a challenging but fun lens to use.

The longest lens still in production for the 6x7 format. Very expensive but fills a niche that can not be filled by any other camera/lens combinaton. The lens comes complete with a trunk type case and a lens support bracket as the RZ67 cannot support very heavy lenses on the body and the body is really not strong enough to be hanging free off the lens as 35mm cameras do when attached to a super-tele. The bracket has threaded holes for tripod mounting but putting it on a arca type head requires a custom lens mount bracket. At f/6.0 wide open it is not a fast lens but makes up for it in sharpness. The 35mm equivalent focal length is about 240mm but this is approximate as the height to width ratio is different between the formats. Excellent for portrait work as well as landscape and wildlife. This lens will render the sharpest wildlife photos if the photographer gets close and focuses precisely. The depth of field wide open is paper thin so perfect focusing is always an necessity. My most common use is shooting wildflowers using extension tubes. The lens will accomodate the 45 and 82mm tubes but the lens bracket will not. I machined a new lens bracket that extends to accept the extra lenght.

Customer Service

Never needed it. Super reliable.
