Strength:

price small size optics build quality built in hood-won't get lost or get in the way

Weakness:

age-probably can't get parts for these anymore

This lens is a great bargain on the used market. It's fairly sharp wide open. Stop down, and it's excellent. I've even had good results using extension tubes with it for macro work. It uses 52mm filters, a Nikon standard. The lens hood is built in and retracts for storage. It almost fits in your pocket. It's all metal construction and can stand rugged use.

Strength:

Outstanding optical performance; mechanically elegant

Weakness:

Use this lens for portrait and animal photography with a Nikon F3. Have used it with earlier F series cameras with equal success. A fine lens.

Strength:

Excelent build quality
Very good sharpness
Quite high contrast
Good handling

Weakness:

Lens hood a little short

I first used the VIVITAR 70-210 f/4 and the TAMRON 70-150 f/3.5. Difficult to get good manual focus with these maximum appertures. The TAMRON 135 f/2.5 meant a good improvement, but the Nikkor beats it in every aspect, with a slighter and smaller lens body.

Strength:

Sharp, clean, shallow depth of field, no distortion, build quality.

Weakness:

Focussing ring travel a bit long and slow in some circumstances.

A fantastic portrait lens from Nikon.
Using f2.8 not too soft but being 135mm depth of field is sometimes too marginal to get the entire subject in focus! - ideal at f4.

Strength:

Sharpness, contrast, light weight yet solid

Weakness:

NONE

The best Nikkor I've ever owned, and I've owned some. It is great for everything, once you become accustomed to the extra focal length (compared to the 105). But it shines brightest for portraits. The portraits have a quality that is difficult to describe but it is something that makes them look almost alive. Pros say it is because this lens is right on the boundry for flatness in a tele lens. I don't know, but I like it. Additionally, this lens works great with appropriate teleconverters, especially for moderate macr photos of spiders, etc. The best part: you can almost steal these things on ebay.

Strength:

optically excellent
solid construction

Weakness:

my older version a tad heavy for balancing with FM or FG

It has to be one of the greatest lenses ever for potraiture. I sold mine and got a cruddy EOS 500 outfit. Sold that and now am rebuilding a Nikon manual focus outfit and a 105mm is top of my 'get' list.

Strength:

Sharpness corner-to-corner, excellent contrast and color rendition, flare resistance.

Weakness:

A tremendous lens, excellent for portraiture and perfect for medium-range candids or actions shots, such as capturing people across a room or across the street. I've used this lens extensively for both B&W and color photography, and am always impressed by the sharpness and contrast of the results, even wide-open.
