Strength:

No visible linear distortion (only close up). Fun to work with BUT extremely demanding. Makes you a better photographer though:) Vulnerable front end! Whatever you do never leave the filter slot empty!!! There is a UV-filter "16MM AF/MF L37C UV BAYONET FILTER" for it which you can get new from Nikon.

Weakness:

Blue "Blubs" when having light sources on the side of the lens. Difficult to shield. At the moment I'm adapting a "Lee SW150 Tokina 16-28mm lens adaptor". The diameter of the adaptor needs to be opened 0,2mm and a in between piece fabricated (3D-printing) but after that I will be able to attache the "Lee SW150 MarkII Filter Holder".

Love it, really sharp when shot at f5.6-8.0. Bought mine from Tokyo 4 years ago ( it cost me roughly $ 1400.00 including customs and tax, todays exchange rate), never regretted it. People seeing it, says "I always wanted a Fish-eye" and when they look into the viewfinder they go "WOW". It is so good that with my Nikon 800E I can crop and get fantastic pictures. Go buy it! The new 14mm is a crap, you have to live with heavy linear distortion, which I hate!

Strength:

Sharpness, lack of distortion, build quality

Weakness:

flare

Amazing lens with astounding sharpness when stopped down (f 11), no visible distortions, built like all professional nikkors of the 70's - 80's so top notch (not like the new whobbling plastic lenses)

Strength:

Build, Image quality when closed down.

Weakness:

Slow to work with. Blue flare that needs hand shielding. Unless you do not care about lens flare, then you can set at F11, shoot away and forget about focus, even on a D3.

Great build. If you want real wide pictures on film or your D3 and can afford to shoot at f8-f11, this lens will give you the best picture quailty with no distortion. at F3.5 it is relatively soft. Even illumination at all stops. Will need to shade with your hand, but it is easy once you get used to it. Slow lens with fantastic image quality closed down.

Strength:

Sharpness.

Weakness:

Price, flare

One of my favorite ultra wide angle lenses. Very sharp rectilinear images. The only problem is extreme flaring if your shooting into a light source.
