    Strength:

    - SUPER SHARP at f/2.8 to f/8 - very large focus ring makes for fast focusing - very close focusing, good quality - handholdability (vs a 50mm lens)

    Weakness:

    - big and heavy (compared to a 50mm) - price (if U are going to buy it new) - not particularly good at largest apertures

This rather long and heavy manual focus lens is perhaps -the- most useful of prime lenses, considering its focal length and largest aperture. I bought this lens when I stumbled across it at a ridiculously low price on the second hand marked (about $200, new is over $1100 in Norway). I like the perspective of a 35mm lens. For perhaps 90% of my pictures I use a normal lens. 35mm is just as far from the normal focal length of 43mm as a 50mm lens. Wide open it is nothing to write home about, but on abut f2.8 to about f8 it definitiely is. It is absolutely SUPER SHARP in this area. Pictures taken hand-held, at f4 with crappy 400 iso film actually has SO MUCH DETAIL that it surpasses the resoloution of my Nikon film scanner (2700ppi). By that I mean that I get color artefacts (aliasing) in areas with fine details, for example railings, fishnets and such scanned at full res. I also like it for its very close focusing ability, much better than any 50mm, and the fact that I can easily hand-hold it at 1/15s with good results. Ill give it a 5 for quality and a 5 for value (since I got it so cheap). If I had to buy it new I''d give it a 3 for value.

    Strength:

Very sharp, very fast & If I had to choose 1 lens, this would be it.

    Weakness:

Quite heavy & not very discreet

an excellent alternative to the standard 50mm, with its wide angle of view & natural look.
