Strength:

*Excellent optical performance
*Easy to handle
*Works well with the SB-21B (the flash head can be attached at the barrel as well as at the front of the lens)

Weakness:

*slow and noisy focusing

AF Micro Nikkor 105/2.8D is a versatile lens. I have used the lens mainly for dental photography, but it is also great for portrait and flower photography. AF is not so good. That's not a serious problem for me because I use MF for all my macro shots. A little expensive, but worth the price.

Strength:

Very sharp pictures, true macro at 1:1, very well made lens. Filter size 52 mm (like most of my other Nikkon lenses)

Weakness:

AF is a bit noisy, better to switch to manual focus for extreme close-ups.

This is a superb lens, ideal for macro work, portraiture (although a bit on the heavy side compared to an 85 mm) and outdoor photography (landscapes, travel). One of my favourite lenses and one I take with me almost all the time. If you can afford it, buy it, if you can't at the moment, save up for it.

Strength:

Sharp, unbelievably so.
Macro, 1:1
AF/MF switch
Easy to use, comfortable feel.
Bright.
Quick focusing.

Weakness:

None.

The best lens that I've ever used. This is the sharpest lens that I've ever seen. If you can only have one lens, make it this one. The macro capability brings things as close as you could want without using a microscope. Though the Sigma 105 is a great lens, especially if you don't have a Nikon camera, the Nikon is much better.

Strength:

Sharpness. The best thing in the world. Relatively light.

Weakness:

It's so sharp. I want to cry everytime I see the photos. I sold the lens because I don't have an AF body. But I'll be back. Excellent for general purpose and outdoor shooting, with 1:1 you won't miss anything.

Strength:

1) 1:1, extra working distance compared to AF-D 60/2.8;
2) Limiter switch;
3) Excellent optics;
4) 52mm filterthread a definite plus;
5) Little or no need for hood due to recessed front element;
6) AF/MF switch for fast operations;
7) Metal inner construction despite plastic exterior.

Weakness:

1) Focusing ring not well dampered;

Very sharp results and useful as portraiture lens. Wide focusing ring and good handling with AF/MF switch. Metal inner barrel a pleasent surprise.
Excelent optics and first class lens for micro & potraiturephotography.

Very Sharp, Limiter, M/A switch

I hear some say that it's slow to AF although i don't use it in macro on AF I have found mine actually the opposite. It is fast not as fast as AFS but still very quick. The lens isn't as noisey as some say. Maybe Nikon have slightly changed something maybe because mine is brand new it works better. My mate has a old one and it hunts bad and is really noisey. Go figure. I'm very happy with it.

Strength:

Light weight
Sharp at f5.6 and higher

Weakness:

Not very sharp at f5.6 and lower f-stops.

If you like to shot micro and like to use aperature setting lower than f.6 then you will get sharp photos and like lens. However if your buying this lens for general purpose photography and condition requiring the lens to be use near its maximum aperature settings, then toss this lens in the garbage, it is very unsharp. My recommendation would be to save-up and buy an 85 mm/1.4 if you can live with this focal length or try the 105 mm with the DC ring.

Model Reviewed: AF105mm f/2.8D Micro-Nikkor

Strength:

This lens is wonderfully sharp and great for macro. Portraits are great as well- perspective is very flattering and while some say this lens is TOO sharp for portraits I disagree. It's easy to add softness, but if a lens isn't sharp to begin with there's no making up for that.

Weakness:

expensive

Great lens all around. I can find no fault in it.
