Model Reviewed: AF60mm f/2.8D Micro-Nikkor

Strength:

It's the sharpest! I use it for macro
work in museums and as a "super-
normal lens" when I don't want to carry a bigger zoom.

Weakness:

none.

It's a great lens. My Nikkor 105mm gets a lot of use too but the 60 is very good for
museum display shooting.

Strength:

Very sharp lens with excellent color rendition

Very tough durable build

Weakness:

Short - not the easiest lens to chase bugs with

Very sharp, capable lens. I have no sharper lens in this focal length. I couldn't bring myself to buy the Sigma 105 - even with its pro finish, it seems lighter and less tank-like. This lens is built solid and produces excellent images.

Strength:

-superb Nikon optics.
>faithful color rendition
>extremely sharp (even wide open)
-convenient Manual to Auto switch.
-excellent construction.
>well-dampened manual focus ring
>solid feel, but not very heavy
-1:1 ratio w/o extension tubes.

Weakness:

I mostly photograph flowers outdoors with available light (with no insects present). Therefore, I don't really need the extra working distance for special lighting or worrying about scaring the tiny critters. That given, it's perfect for the type of macro photography I do.

I love this lens and recommend it to anyone getting into macro photography. It also works as a standard lens. I skipped buying a 50mm lens, and it proved to be a wise decision. The images you get from this lens gives justice to what you pay for it, and this lens is really not that expensive. This lens is always on my F100 and it's definitely worthy of that.

Customer Service

Haven't needed it and hopefully won't for a long time.

Strength:

I bought the 70-300 to fill a void, it has a macro ability. When I played with the 60 I wanted to use it at work for defective product. I have used it a few times now with perfect results. Perfect sharp pictures.

Strength:

extremely sharp from mid to close focus (has not used in infinite focus)
faithful color
very well built

Weakness:

short working distance in macro
a little big as a "normal lens"
short focus travel from 2ft on, making it somwhat hard to manual focus

Great macro lens. Fine "replacement" to my 50mm nikkor (it's no f1.2, but I can't remember ever shooting the old lens wider than f2.8).

Strength:

Superb sharpness and contrast. Great edge to edge sharpness from mid to close focus. Great at infinity provided stopped down to f5.6 and beyond.

Weakness:

Close distance to subject at min focus.
Has to be stopped down at infinity to get edges sharp (This is a mocro lens...)

What can I say... one HECK of a lens. Optics are out of this world. I truly cannot imagine anything sharper. Great macro lens that excells at medium to short focus distances (This is what it is desighned for..) and at infinity stopped down. MTF rating at photodo and other tests are especially impressive if you consider that these tests are done at infinity only.....

Strength:

Excllent optical clarity & resolution
Excellent construction
Easy to use autofocus/manual focus
Fast (f/2.8)

Weakness:

None

I regard this lens as one of Nikon's premier 35mm autofocus lenses. The image clarity is stunning, the glare and flare minimal, depth of field good, and unfocussed areas have a pleasing appearance. This now my macro (micro) lens of choice, although my Tamron 90/2.8 is also superb.

The lens doubles nicely as a standard focal length lens and has reasonably fast autofocus.

I haven't used Leica or Contax products, but I believe this lens has taken me to the limits of 35mm photography. If I want macro to 1:1 and want to enlarge above 11X14, then I switch to my 645 Takumar 120/4, although in ways other than negative size, it is not superior to the Nikkor.
