You''''''''re kidding

I got this lens with my N-80 instead of the 28-80. Having briefly used a 28-80 I was not overly impressed. I knew I would get the Nikon 50mm f1.4, so I opted to get it right away. I am very pleased with this lens. It is razor sharp, quick autofocus and lets me shoot indoors without flash. I like the bokeh, especially when photographing people. It fits very nicely on my N-80, doesn''''''''t give it a nose heavy feel. This is one of those few and far between products that is everything you thought it would be, and more. This lens should be in every Nikon users bag!

Weakness:

Made in China.

I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer. I started out with a point and shoot digital camera. But I have gone backwards to film photography, because I think that it is more versatile and affordable (for now). My first lens was a Tokina 24~200mm f/3.5~5.6 lens. Its is a great lens for sunny days and zoom photography. For low light photography I needed a lens with a larger aperture, perferably fixed. Since I already had a zoom lens I choose this 50mm "normal" prime lens. This lens is great. Even in the most cloudy days this lens is great. I took some pictures of a tree under another tree on a cloudy late afternoon and the picture turned out crystal clear. It focuses fast, it is sharp, it allows me to be versatlie with only two lenses. This lens was made in China. Whatever Nikon my say about quality standards in its Chinese factories, it is not the same as buying a lens made in Japan. However, it is worth buying no matter where it is made, because it has the design speficications of Nikon and you can easily afforded because it is made in China. Otherwise, I doubt I would buy this lens.

Bought this for my N80 in lieu of the standard 28-80 zoom and was amazed at the quality of photos, especially with the fill flash. It made me "work" for the shot and think about frame composition, but I was rewarded with great results. Have also taken some great ambient light shots indoors, as the speed of this lens allows me that option as well.

Strength:

Very sharp photos. Large aperture for lower-light shooting, and bright viewfinder images. Great color rendition. Small size.
Construction feels very solid.

Weakness:

None, really.
A bit more expensive than the 50mm F1.8 Nikon.

I recently sold my 28-70mm zoom after comparing my photos with a friends photos. His photos were taken with an old Pentax manual-focus camera and a 50mm lens. His shots were brighter, more colorful, and sharper than the ones taken with my zoom.

When choosing the Nikon 50mm, I compared the F1.8 to the F1.4. The 1.4 cost over $150 more than the 1.8, but the construction felt far more solid. The newer 1.8's are being made in China, whereas the 1.4 are still being manufactured in Japan. I'm not sure if this will effect the quality, but the 1.4 sure felt a lot more substantial to me. And the extra 1/2 stop of light doesn't hurt either.

I'm thrilled with the lens; its bright, sharp, small, and the 50mm focal length gives a great natural perspective.

I think everyone should keep a 50mm handy for low-light, natural shooting.

If you've got the extra $150, I would reccomend the 1.4 over the 1.8.

Strength:

Images are incredibly sharp with great color rendition. Lightweight. Low cost. Superb lens.

Weakness:

Slightly soft edges at 1.4 at night. Softness disappears at 1.8 and above.

This is the sharpest lens I own. The image quality is absolutely incredible. The price is more than reasonable (about $250, which is cheap for a lens of this quality). I love it! You can see some of my shots with this lens at http://members.aol.com/jhbanda/index.html. I have used this lens on both the N70 and F5 Nikons; it has done well on both cameras.

Have it in your bag. Now. This lens is incredible for low light situations and many other applications. Though egge sharpness is better when stopped down 5.6 and beyond, it is still excellent at up to f1.4 which makes for a lens that you could use confidently at any setting.
