Well, I suppose you cant say much about a 50mm Prime. Many see this focal range as boring. Well bad luck to them is all I can say because this lens is an optical beauty. Yes its not a zoom but if you can step forward or backwards you can compromise on this limitation. Many people argue between the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and the 1.4... well I have used both and can attest to the reat optical quality that both these lenses possess. Personally I'm a fave for the 1.4 because it works well in low light conditions and it seems to be better built than its cheaper cousin.

Overall I can say this. f you are looking for a sharp optic, which will give you excellent colour and contrast rendition to boot, and you can handle the 'normal' angle of view, then this lens is a real gem... If you want sharper results you shouldn't be looking at 35mm...

Strength:

Lightweight
Sharp

Weakness:

Plastic feel. The focusring feels to thin.

The lens is sharp, very sharp. The Leica and Zeiss lenses deliver more saturated colors and a different background blur (bokeh) which appels my eyes better. The sharpness of the Nikonlens improves dramatically when stopped down 2 stops.

Strength:

*f/1.4
*Viewing angle of this 50mm lens is very close to that of human eyes, WYSIWYG
*Focusing at top speed
*Good contrast and color rendition at all aperture
*Sharp as needle
*Small and lightweight

Weakness:

*Some people may find the background blur is strange at f/1.4. But I find this effect looks interesting
*The minimum aperture is f/16, so this lens may need a faster shutter speed (1/8000 sec will be the best) or a filter at sunny day. But I don't think this is a real problem because most of the Nikon caneras have 1/4000s+ shutter speed

This lens is suitable for shooting landscape, portrait......everything at any lighting condition! I really love this Nikkor!

Customer Service

I don't need it so far.

Strength:

Not expensive, fast, and very very sharp. It's also a lens that works when you've got to have the sun in a bad place, at least it's better than most by a long shot.

Weakness:

no

A very good prime lens, for not that much money indeed. It would be nice to get f22 or 32 out of it, but that would require quite a diaphram assembly. (Not for sharpness or exposure control, that, but for depth of field when needed.)

Strength:

Ability for low-light shooting and terrific sharpness.

Weakness:

One. Could Nikon PLEASE make a new version of this lens that gets down to f22 instead of stopping at f16? Why not?

D*** quick and very sharp. Subjects pop in and out of focus, and the focus ring is properly dampened. I bought this lens to get shots in barely-lit jazz clubs, and with an 800 speed film it's quite doable. Nice work, nikon!

Customer Service

Not necessary.

Strength:

Considering the slowness of my 24-120, this was a no-brainer. Granted that it gives a neutral perspective, but then again it doesn't distort or warp people's faces... Just a neutral representation of the subject...

Considering the crispness and brightness of prime lenses, I'll have to start picking up those as opposed to zooms (24-120 and 70-300 covers just about everything, but not with high-quality)

Weakness:

First one bought had poorly coated rear lens so I exchanged it, but otherwise no problems

Bright, fast, focuses close, just a tad expensive

Customer Service

No problem. Obvious mfg. defects are taken care of on the spot (the store, that is)
