    Strength:

Sharp lens. Very fast. Nice max aperture of f/1.8. Light and inexpensive

    Weakness:

Cheap plastic build. Noisy auto focus.

It's the least expensive lens in my bag, but it's one of the most handiest prime lens to bring to shoots. It's great for low light photography (minus use of a strobe). Though I like the fact that the max aperture is f/1.8 - when shooting closeups I try not to go beyond f/2 - f/2.5. The 'bokeh' at f/1.8 is very harsh. But when you shoot at the f/2 to f/3.2 range, the 'bokeh' is actually quite pleasant. Very sharp lens in low light conditions. It definely produces sharper images on print than my 18-70mm and 24mm f/2.8.

    Strength:

    Small.
    Nice color.

    Weakness:

Slow to autofocus, and sometimes inaccurate focus.
Maybe it's just my eyes, but it doesn't seem as sharp as some of my other lenses.

    Nice color. Compact. Cheap.

Great to carry in my pack mountain biking because it is so small/light and shoots to f/1.8, plus if I break it there's a cheap, easily accessible new one right around the corner.

Some of my best pics (although I am quite an amateur) have come from this lens.

Excellent all-arounder, although I am looking forward to trying the Sigma 30mm/1.4, mainly because on my D70s the 50mm is more like a 75mm lens. For the type of stuff I'm shooting, which is action in low-light, I would like a wider angle, and the extra f stop added wouldn't be bad either.

    The perfect lens

Cannot fault. This lens can put other lenses costing over 10x more to shame. Colour rendition is perfect. Sharpness is awesom. Possibly the most accurate photo taking lens I have ever owned, trully faitfull to the subject, at least on my D2X anyway.

    Strength:

    Everything.

    Weakness:

    Nothing.

Amazing lens. I have used the Canon version before with medicore success.

Sharp, sharp, SHARP! It's sharp at all apertures! Great color rendition and the build is amazing for a plastic lens. Very solid little lens and the price can't be beat.

I use this lens quite often and it's safe to say that it's a photographer's best friend.

This is one very remarkable lens or product;,probably the best and sharpest Lens Nikon makes to this day! and the best 50 mm lens in the photo industry right now. All is near perfect, colour ,contrast, fastness,Bokeh and SHARPNESS; its horrifying good i just recently compared it with a canon lens 50 mm 1,4 and other 50 mm lenses both on film and digital BOY! only this one steals the show and shines as teh reference Result is that now i use it for my PJ work for all things in the newspaper i work for; my editor is more than satiesfied with my work. The result is stunning and better than my leica and other stuff; my sample is even extremely sharp at full F stop 1,8 for only 99 box!?wauw. come on.it says made in china; maybe we must get used to a new quality brand label for the future, instead of made in japan its made in china..! I will now look closer to the Nikon lens range nearby; 85 mm 1,8 D and others also from the zoom range which is among the best in the world right now. But for sure, i repeat; This Nikon Nikkor 50 mm 1,8 D is the best they have made up to date in the industry, its chokking how good it is. ****** 6 stars from here

    Strength:

Sharpness and contrast. The best normal lens that Nikkor makes at any price.

This is a magnificent lens. I have tested this lens under controlled conditions and under practical shooing situation, and it is sharp. At f2.8, the eye brows are crisp and you can see the skin texture. Using this lens with Kodak’s 400 CN film and a Nikon’s film scanner, I get better result than if I was using a medium format camera. Initially, I did not like the chatter feel of plastic sliding on plastic when I was manually focusing this lens. This was easily fixed by using white lithium grease between the sliding plastic parts.

    Strength:

Extremely small and light; on a D70 makes the whole kit great for carrying at parties and events

    Weakness:

Soft at fully open aperture, which is how I intended to use it (for available light shots at events. Autofocus not particularly fast, although it is accurate. Field of view crop on a D70 makes the effective focal length a bit long for group shots.

I have some evaluation samples I shot at: http://www.pbase.com/hsandler/50mm Extremely sharp at f4; very sharp at f2.8; rather disappointing wide open

    Strength:

    - Focuses quickly, even in low light - Extremely sharp, even at f/1.8 - Excellent walking around lens, especially if you're not a big fan of zooms

    Weakness:

    - I have several old Canon lenses that are built like tanks. Compared to them, this lens feels a little bit cheaply constructed. That might just be an outdated preference for metal over plastic; I haven't had any problems with this lens. - In a very few of my shots, this lens fails to achieve proper bokeh. In other words, the background blur has that slightly "doubled" look instead of a perfect creamy bluriness. I can't reproduce this issue consistently though. I think this is something to be aware of if you are one of those types who looks for bokeh before anything else in an image (which strikes me as a bit silly), but for me the images were almost always perfect.

I just returned from a trip to India and this lens was my "walking around lens" of choice. For my taste in photographs (relatively close-in portraits and the occasional environmental portrait), this lens is perfect. It focuses quickly even in very low light. The images are very sharp even wide open, and tack sharp above f/4 or maybe f/5.6. The colors are perfect, and I like the bokeh. If you've recently purchased the D70 and are ambivalent about the image quality from the kit lens (18-70mm) this should be the first lens you buy to supplement the kit. At $99, the value can't be beat. If you're making the transition from 35mm to digital (this was the case for me), just remember that 50mm on a digital body is actually like a short telephoto: in some circumstances you'll feel like 50mm is a bit tight. Finally, be aware that at head and shoulders portrait distance at f/1.8, it's very easy to get the subject's nose in focus and eyes out of focus, especially if you're using the D70's auto-focus. That's not a fault of the lens per se, but it's a very easy trap to fall into.

    Strength:

Sharpness, Price, Lightweight, Excellent color rendering fast autofocus on my F100 and F80.

    Weakness:

I dont think bokeh is smooth enough but not horrible.

Excellent Sharpness and Color rendering. 35mm is my normal lens and 50mm is short tele. I use this alot for portraiture along with 85mm f1.8D and both are amazing. Best lens for it's focal length and price range.

    Strength:

The image quality at wide open. Very usable images with all the apatures. light, compact. focus fast on AF cameras. focus ring is good with MF camera. Its just really cheap but high quality prime lens that anyone can afford and can prduce outstanding images.

    Weakness:

    hm..

I shot couple rolls of Films with this Lens testing from wide to closed appatures. To my eyes the bokeh was not that bad like what other reviewers said. don't mind the plastic filter threads or the outter construction. They are not important to me since the lens produces high quality images. at f1.8, the selective focus was very interesting and at f22 the depth of field was ok. Any lens with the apature wide open never produces pin sharp focus but this one might be the exceptional. I like this lens at f1.8 then 50mm f1.4 at f1.8. Its compact and light, produces great tonality and sharp images. People would say its Plastic construction lowers the quality of lens or made in china sticker but it is not my biggest concern. It's still on my camera.
