Strength:

Very sharp, Cheap, comes standard with Hood, Fast.

Weakness:

will visually better when f stop set at 2.8 or higher.

If you've a lot of money, suggest you to buy the 85mm/1.4D which do not have any weaknesses. But I am sure this lens may give you more than the 1.4D in terms of value of money.

Strength:

1. Sharp and contrasty from f/2.8-16.0.

Weakness:

1. Soft at f/1.8;
2. Flare due to large front element, so use the lens hood; and
3. 0.91 metre (3"-0") minimum focusing distance is too far from subject in some situations.

I got tired of changing lenses in the field and traded this lens in for the AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-70 mm f/2.8 D lens in the Spring of 1997 because Nikon did not have an AFS 28-70 mm f/2.8 D IF-ED version like Canon's.

This is one sharp and colour neutral fixed focal length lens for the lens purist. It's sad that Nikon could not tweak the optics at f/1.8. Buy this lens used and save big! I would prefer the versatility of the AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200 mm f/2.8 D N IF-ED.

Strength:

1) It's an extremely sharp lens.
2) Its weight is substantial, feels like a good lens. :-)

Weakness:

1) It is extremely prone to flare. (Which probably explains why it comes with the matching lens hood!) Be weary of the sun and other bright light sources.
2) The focus wrong is seriously underdamped. I would hate to manually focus the sucker.

For less than $500, you can get an excellent portrait lens which also works great in low-light. AF is fast (thanks to f/1.8), and the lens looks and feels nice. The only problem is that the focus wrong is underdamped (unacceptable at this price point) and the lens flares up really easily!

Customer Service

Nikon's 800# is great -- you actually get to talk to someone, and they actually know a lot about their products!

ONE OF NIKON'S SHARPEST LENSES AT A NOT TO HARD TO HANDLE PRICE. I FIND BOTH MY 24MM F2.8 &THE 85MM 1.8 TO BE THE IDEAL COMBINATION FOR MOST OF MY PHOTO INTERESTS. THE 85MM1.8 IS THE ONE LENSE I USE ALL THE TIME FOR PORTRAITS , BOTH PEOPLE & PET PHOTOGRAPHY. USED WITH THE SB28 FLASH IT CAN PRODUCE PET PHOTO IMAGES SO SHARP YOU CAN COUNT THE HAIRS ON THEIR BODY. BEST MID TELE IN ITS CLASS.

This is rapidly becoming my favorite lens. I've used it almost exclusively indoors for girls basketball at f1.8 with great results. The internal rear focus design will focus faster than my 35-70. It has a 9 blade diaphragm (not curved blades) that helps with out of focus objects when wide open. I always keep the included lens hood on and purchased a 77mm snap cap to attach to the hood....great protection for the front element without using a uv or skylight filter. You won't regret buying the 85 1.8D!

Weakness:

Straight aperture blades

I hate to ruin the perfect 5 score, but I really think it's a bummer that Nikon didn't put the rounded aperture blades on this lens. I love this lens, but the bokeh isn't nearly as nice as that produced by the f1.4 (which has rounded blades). All in all, a fabulous lens, but it does have a bummer of a problem for portraits. Maybe they didn't add this feature because they still wanted to sell f1.4s. *shrug*

This is an execellent lens. I love this lens. I have to say that this and Carl Zeiss 50mm 1.4 are my favourite lenses out all the others I have tried. It is capable of producing extremely sharp photos and colours are very nice indeed. Buy it.

Not a big deal, but the rear lens element comes close to flush with the bayonet mount. Just something to watch when quickly attaching the lens to the camera body

An excellent value for a portrait lens. It's great for shooting at a larger aperture for greater control of depth of field. I sometimes shoot it with the NIKON soft focus1 filter for a different effect.

I have tested the 85/1.8 AF at 90 lpmm at F5.6 & F8 in the center--this is a remarkable real world resolution and most likely as sharp as anything from any manufacturer. In useage this is a terrific, sharp portrait lens. Considering it is auto-focus, the manual focus feel isn't bad, better than many other Nikkors AF lens.
