Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED VR 35mm Primes

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED VR 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

This super-quiet telephoto lens features Nikon's unique Silent Wave Motor technology which converts "traveling waves" into rotational energy to focus the optics. Also features a newly designed optical system, using Nikon's performance-proven Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass. Lens's fully automatic diaphragm incorporates more blades, making out-of-focus portions of the image appear more pleasing. Distance Signal technology provides focused-distance information. Designed for maximum autofocus performance with the F5, F4, N90s and N70.

Strength:

Phenomenal resolution, contrast, even at f/2.8. Professional, tank like build quality.

Weakness:

"Gritty" looking bokeh.

This lens has phenomenal resolving power and contrast, even at f/2.8. When I got my first results back, I quickly understood this is one lens on which Nikon staked their reputation.

Later, I used it with the Nikon TC 14E II converter - results continue to be amazing, satisfying, useable.

Ergonomic. Hand holdable. Solid Tripod collar/foot aparatus.

Interestingly, an Italian researcher did a direct comparison between this lens and the CanonIS USM f.2.8 equivalent, and found the Canon slightly better. I find this interesting as I cannot even imagine a lens being any sharper than this Nikon AFS-I 300 f/2.8.

Strength:

Fast, quiet focus. Superb build quality. Tack sharp images.

Weakness:

I would like a better hood mount, the clamp set up is lacking and clumsy. The bayonet mounting on the 'S' zooms is a much better setup.

Heck of a lens! If you are serious about your telephoto shots, you need this lens. I used the 300 2.8 AF-EDIF for a couple years. Its a great lens, but not the quality of this lens. Tack sharp, instant focus, snaps onto focus without focus hunting (don't you just hate that?) and quiet. I used this with the TC14e converter, but was not pleased with the results (sharpness was slightly lacking). I now use it with the TC14EII and 20II and can recommend the results. This lens along with the two converters will likely satisfy your telephoto needs. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Sharp, Fast, built like a tank. Incredible detail and color

Weakness:

Lousy lense cover, giant sunshade, Heavy 5.5 pounds, Expensive, but you get what you pay for. If you can afford one, buy it, if you can't start saving, you won't be sorry you did.

WOW! If you want super fast focusing, Okay I will say it, TACK SHARP and extreme detail look no further. I had this on an F100, It is just incredible. A bit heavy, I lugged this thing around on a five mile trek, but the results were worth it. You have to try it yourself to believe what possibilites this lense offers, a real difference this lens makes.

Strength:

Extremely fast autofocus, Very high build quality. Works very well with the TC-14E and TC-20E

Weakness:

None

In shooting motorcycle races, and in conjuction with an F5, I have gotten images that I thought were impossible. While shooting this extreme speed sport, it is very difficult to determine if I had caught the image on film, infocus and with proper exposure that is, until I recieved the processed slides. All images were amazingly sharp. However, I don't recommend this lens for portrait work-it is too sharp for flatering photos of people.

Very fast AF with F5,

Before I always think this lens should be very well optically than shorter lenses <200mm.But when I tried one it tells me my 50mm is really one of the sharpest, and 80-200mm also par to it when stopping down to F5.6 to F8. Want optical llike 300mm F2.8 but cheap, get the 180mm F2.8 ED for less than $1000 ..

Strength:

Super Sharp, Super fast focus, Just looks great.

Weakness:

Mine for not owning one before now

Nikon continues to hold the line on quality, I hope people will continue to desire and purchase the best, so Nikon will continue to produce the best in photographic equipment. Now all I have to do is find the subjects whether in the marsh, zoo or football field and shoot them.
