Strength:

Price is low and picture quality are both top notch, what more do you look for in a lens???

Weakness:

It seems a little cheaply made, but I've had no problems with it.

This lens is really great. For a c note you can own what is one of Nikons best pieces of glass. It's a little less convenient than the mid range zoom for framing, but it more than makes up for it in speed and sharpness. I love it on my N80 with the MB-16 battery holder/grip. You seriously can't go wrong at this price. It will blow away that zoom that came with your camera. I really din't realize how sharp pictures could be before I got this beauty. This lens is alot more useful than most people give it credit for. Try it, you will really like it. It may sound old but, this lens will take your pictures to the next level.

Strength:

Sharp, clear, ultra-fast, lightweight, well built manual focus ring with nice "jewel-like" movement. Seems pretty study in my use, despite some other comments I've seen (maybe I just avoid dropping it onto hard surfaces ;-) )

Weakness:

None that I've seen.

This is a must-buy lens. A real no-brainer. If you've been shooting with slow 28-80 mini-zooms like the majority of users, your photography will take a quantum leap with this lens. It is obscenely fast, razor sharp, and crystal clear. Your photos will have a clarity and depth of color that you won't get on a mini-zoom. You will take pictures in low-light and difficult conditions that you never dreamed of before. Set the camera on Aperture-priority, open up the lens, and never look back. Shots at early dawn and dusk? Not an issue. It probably won't even ask for a flash. Incredible. I use this as my primary lens now, and I love it.

Customer Service

Haven't used it. But lens comes with 5-year warranty.

Strength:

-Razor-edge sharp -Lightweight -Inexpensive -Small

Weakness:

-Nothing significant

GREAT lens! Razor sharp at all f/stops, fast autofocus, lightweight and cheap. I use it for landscape photography and it is superb, no vignetting whatsoever. Even though it does feel cheap, I have tossed and banged this thing around a fair amount and it sill works flawlessly.

This lens is a must have for any photographer. It is sharp, light weight and cheap. My only complaint is the focusing ring (on MF) is really lose and has a cheap feel to it. Great piece of glass!

this lens is a must have! i am a fire investigator/fire photographer have put this lens thru very difficult situations/difficult lighting conditions/extremely hazardous enviroments (smoke, water, heat. utilized for field and laboratory use(close-up & macro)and find the results outstanding. the lens is used daily and produces the results expected for professional quality. feel is good, light weight, and extremely sharp. body does not have a cheap feel even though constructed of plastic. handles like a pro!

Strength:

Light and, at its price, disposable--who needs armor plating when they're this cheap?

Weakness:

Not the best tool for mashing potatoes--otherwise, none.

A true diamond for a pittance. I chose this over the faster 50mm because it's sharper all over and lighter. Both are great, but the cheap one is ever so slightly better (although the difference will escape all but the terminally fussy).

Strength:

SHARP!!! Fast Small Light CHEAP!!!

Weakness:

Build quality is weak. Bought one for me and one for my girlfriend for her FM2N, and her''s had a lube leak. The replacement was fine.

Almost a year ago I decided to take my photography hobby to a new level. I traded in my Nikon N70 for an N80 and purchased this lens to go with it. Since then, I have become convinced that no one that is in any way serious about taking pictures should be without this lens. Incredibly sharp, fast enough, and (relatively) CHEAP! I took it in for service after it was involved in a car accident. The lens was fine, but they recommended the usual clean and lube, which would have cost me 50 bucks. I told them flat out, I''d rather buy a new one when it fails than spend half its cost on maintenance. Now Nikon released a new version tha tis identical to this with the addition of the D-chip. I guess it might make flash exposure better, but honestly it doesn''t matter that much. When mine dies I''ll get the D version, it''s still just a tad over $100. You simply can''t go wrong. This thing deserves a rating of 10 for value.

Strength:

Optically will compete with anything. Sharp glass.

Weakness:

Build-quality is somewhat compromised. Just received a new 24mm f2.8 AF Nikkor made in Japan compared to the 50 which was made in China. The quality of the finish in the "24" is vastly superior, but it also cost 3 times the price and optically is no sharper, although it''s as sharp, which is saying something!

Way more value optically than what you pay for. First "Chinese" Nikkor I''ve ever owned (!) but the glass is what you''ve come to expect from a Nikkor. This product does not disappoint. Tack sharp. If it breaks buy another, but I''m not sure it will as easily as I first though. Five year warranty is nice. Thanks Nikon!

Strength:

Tack Sharp !! , Cheap, Light, Excellent colour rendition, Fast auto focus. Buy this lens and you will not regret it !!

Weakness:

Build quality, but then again it is so cheap for what it can do

This is a cracking little lens. Pictures are tack sharp from f2.8 and beyond. There are very slight egde softnes softness and slight contrast reduction at f1.8 but still very sharp. Colour rendition is very accurate and neutral with excellent shadow detail. Exposure for flash fotography is very good despite the lack of ''D'' chip. If you are beginner (or even advanced for that matter) looking for your first prime lens, you would be missing out if you don''t get this lens. It is the cheapest nikon prime lens and probably one of the best. The 50mm f1.4D version is almost three times as expensive but is no better optically than this one and have similar build quality. The inclusion of ''D'' chip does not justify the price difference. The 50mm f1.8 is really light and fits and look really really nice on my F80. With this on the whole set up feels as light as a compact camera. The only little shortcoming is the build quality. but then again it is so cheap that you would probably overlook this. Autofocus is fast. I definitely recommend this lens to everyone. It is a must have for every nikon users.

Strength:

small compact light superb optics better than you''ll ever need recessed front element acts as a hood allowing even better contrast

Weakness:

50mm lens is useful but not used as often these days, but i find myself in that zoom range quite often

are you kidding? people don''t realize that this lens has gone through countless versions, each better than the next. zoom lenses today may have gone through at most two versions, some none at all. all optical abberations have been corrected for in this lens, as much has possible. you are a master if you can utilitze this lens effectively because theoretically, a 50mm can be used for anything. for me, if find that the 50mm lens is somewhat telephoto. i mainly use it for family portraits (head to waist) and for nighttime photography because it is so darn sharp. it is by far the fastest of all the lenses I own and it is convenient. i do find that i don''t carry it around as much as my 24mm probably because I''m into doing landscape and cityscapes right now. technically, you cannot beat this lens. it used to be that manufacturers would compete to make this their finest example in their lens stable, but now (due to consumer pressure), the widest, most compact zoom ratio seems to be the latest thing. who knows, photography as we know it may all become digital...then what
