Strength:

Very sharp and very cheap and very good

Weakness:

AF is a little bit slow but at this price you can forgive anything similar

An excellent lens. I never had a go on the 1.4 D but this is 1/4 of that price. Pictures come razor sharp and I can not imagine anyone trading this lens for the 1.4 D just for the D chip. If it came out in two colours I would probably buy another one just for fun.

super sharp and contrasty

Weakness:

NONE!
The lack of the D chip is a non issue!

This is probably the sharpest Nikkor lens ever made. Don't waste your money on the 1.4D, this lens will do just as good and better!

I am using this lens mainly on my Nikon FM2N, serve very well on its manual function. This lens is bright even though it is just F1.8, instead of the more expensive F1.4 and F1.2 sidlings. For this sort of money, I can have no complains.

I have compared this lense to my Carl Zeiss 50mm1.4 and the Nikkor is very close. I bought 2 because the of the price and that the lense is one of Nikons sharpest lenses ever made.

RIDICULOUS price.

Weakness:

NONE for this price

This is your lens if you have a limited budget.
Don't buy 50mm 1.4D - It has the same plastic construction and D chip only make some difference in rare special shots.
The 2/3 F stop don't justify the 3x price even more because the 1.4D is not sharp wide open and the 1.8 is.
You can't go wrong with this lens, if you buy a better lens latter, just keep it as backup.

Customer Service

In Brazil it is nice.

Just to repeat the reviews below:
-Sharp
-Fast

-Sturdy

Weakness:

None - other than making unfair comparisons or finding one for the sake of it.

Listen to these people. I bought one of these lenses for £55 after reading these and other reviews and have been patting my self on the back ever since. Though I've never been unhappy with my standard 35-80 zoom, the 50mm lens is so much faster and more positive to use and the results just look sharper and more "professional "if that doesn't sound too sad - what I mean is generally more impressive. I've taken several identical shots with both lenses and the 50mm always wins- except for flash shots - lack of "D" chip etc.

The single focal length can be a bit limiting in certain situations but really not as much as you may think and I've found it makes me take more time and care in composing the image. Now I feel a bit guilty in ingoring my little zoom lens after years of service but can only bring myself to use it for flash photography or when I need the 35mm setting.

You're kidding right?

Sensational little number, purchased for indoor low light work without flash but have started using it for all sorts of scenes due to the quality of output. Could not justify the 3x price for the 1.4, barely even worth no matter how you look at it. Very tidy work Nikon.

Doctor's orders were to "lighten the bag" so the 55f1.2 had to go. This 50f1.8 was recommended and has proved to be a much better lens than expected.
Existing light weddings with Fuji 800 Professional film are life-like with this lens.Enlargements to 16x20 and 20x24 on Fuji Reala rival my 85f2 results. Lack of a "D" chip is no problem. Field work with my PB6 bellows and extension tubes is much easier with the much brighter screen image compared to the 55f3.5 Micro(flatness of field not considered). This lens is good for back-to-the basics photography in practicing composition and visual dicipline. I give this lens a dual "High Five"!

Customer Service

Good when CLA (C)lean,(L)ubricate (A)djusting are required.

Strength:

SHARP and plenty fast enough.
Less distortion than the 50mm 1.4 AF-D.
Light.
Very inexpensive for what you get.

Weakness:

Plastic filter threads, but the 1.4 version is the same.

Better than the 50mm 1.4 in every way, at a third the cost. Build quality on these lenses is nearly the same. The 50mm 1.8 is lighter because it has less glass. Same plastic. Both made in China.
