Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 8mm f/3.5 35mm Primes

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 8mm f/3.5 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

Designed for digital photography, this full frame 8mm fisheye lets you view and compose dramatic ultra wide-angle "fisheye" images of 180 degrees for dramatic photos with edge-to-edge sharpness. These results are further enhanced due to ED lens elements that minimize chromatic aberrations, a circular aperture diaphragm for natural-looking background blur, and multi-coating to reduce flaring and ghosting. The dust- and splash-resistant design lets you shoot no matter the weather.

Strength:

Very Fishy
No Vignetting
No Colour Distortion
Cool effect
first 4/3 fisheye to hit the market.
comes in a nice little bag for you too!

Weakness:

heavy and rather large.
lots of glass to keep clean
not such a fast lens.at 3.5f

not threaded to add any filters to. so if a skate smashes up your lens, you better have insurance.

The lens is the first real fisheye from olympus for the new four thirds system. its a very fun lens. and for skateboard photography its very versitile. Along with its close focus range (2 cm) it doubles as a nice macro. The lens is very fishy with no vignetting or color distortion. good glass and splashproof coating help this lens alot.

Customer Service

Olympus customer service sucks as far as i'm concerned. since they are only open weekdays and i am always really busy with school during the week i never get a chance to call them until the weekend and ther not open.

Strength:

Sharpness, contrast, edge sharpness, compactness, not too pricey.

Weakness:

A little pricey for a little used lens, the front lens element is exposed as in all fisheyes.

If you like fisheyes, this is the one for you. I used to love my Zuiko 16mm and this is better in terms of sharpness, edge sharpness and contrast. In addition it focuses closer than the 16mm did. Although I miss the viewfinder of the old OM series, at least I don't really have to focus this lens.

Strength:

Very sharp and contrast. I love the ability to do close-ups as well. When you are backed up against a canyon wall in a slot canyon, or back to a precipice, or are in a smallish space, there's no other solution than this fisheye (or maybe the 7-14mm which I don't have yet).

Weakness:

Not much protection for the protruding front lens element. A little pricey for a lens that's not used too much but see above.

I had always like my Zuiko 16mm and always found situations where I could use this specialized lens and put off buying into the 4/3 system until I found out about this 8mm. With either lens I found that you can avoid obvious distortions by placing the horzontals and verticals smack in the middle of your photo. Uhhh. I forgot what price I paid for the thing so the price above may not be accurate.

Strength:

* Very sharp !
* Build quality
* Weathersealed
* Nice color reproduction

Weakness:

More expensive than other brand (but worth for every penny you pay ! )

The first full frame fisheye lens for 4/3 system.
My first impression when opened the box is : A great build quality comparing with other brand Fisheye lens (such Canon EF 15 mm f/2.8 or Nikkor DX 10.5 mm). Heavier but sturdy and very comfort to hold
