Strength:

Excellent sharpness, fast, rugged, and relatively inexpensive lens. Fantastic colors.

Weakness:

Not very common when produced, and hard to find today. Most people opt for the faster f/1.4 version which was still in production as of January 2009.

Excellent sharpness, fast, rugged, and relatively inexpensive lens. You get a LOT for your money with the Pentax FA 50mm f/1.7 lens. It is sharper than the f/1.4 version up to f/2 and has a more subdued bokeh which renders the out of focus areas like a Monet masterpiece. The 1.4 produces more exciting backgrounds, but it's a matter of personal taste.

Fantastic colors are one of the strong points of this lens too.

Some people like the F series version of this lens ever more, but the FA is my favorite in auotfocus.

The perfect basic lens. Lasts forever. My lens is from the early 1980's and works perfect now.
