Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro 35mm Primes

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

Includes reviews for the new "DG" digital SLR version of the lens. The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro delivers superb, distortion-free images throughout its broad focus range, from infinity telephoto to 1:1 (life-size) macro, as close as 12.3" without accessories. This new medium telephoto macro lens employs a new design concept for digital SLR cameras. Its new lens power layout produces an excellent optical performance and also reduces flare and ghost. This new lens is designed to reduce the influence of harmful light caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. Macro 105mm F2.8 EX DG allows greater working distance between the lens and subject. High contrast and excellent image quality are made possible in all shooting ranges. This macro lens is ideal for digital SLR cameras as well as film SLR cameras.

Strength:

-solid construction
-sharp at close ranges and infinity
-compact
-price
-non rotating front element
-good MF feel
-1:1

Weakness:

-not a constant aperture when focusing, but it doesn't matter if you have TTL metering
-switches between AF and MF odly

This is a great lens. Don't let the price fool you, pictures are very sharp, sharpnes is comparable to my Nikon 50mm f1.8. Autofocus is good when used in general shooting and with limit switch on. When used in macro mode, you'll have to switch to manual focusing anyway, so it doesn't really matter that AF is slow and hunts at close ranges. What is a little odd here is switching between AF and MF. You have to switch two switches: the one on your camera, and another one on the lens(at least for Nikon users). The lens is pretty compact and really very well built. I like the focal length of 105mm because this makes this lense very usefull for macro photography, portrait photography and nature photography. Three lenses in one and it performs outstanding in all cases, except you might want to use a difusser when shooting portraits, as this lens is too d*** sharp! Can't be beaten regarding quality and/or price.

Strength:

Fast, cheap, liteweight and handsome . Exceptionally sharp.

Weakness:

Noisy and tortoise like AF.The gold ring attracts unnecesssary attention.

The AF is so slow and noisy. If you're trying to capture that bee hovering over the flower ,make sure somebody is available to sent you to the nearest emergency dept, you'll be swarmed by the whole nest in no time. I almost thought I bought a broken lens. My other Sigmas are not as noisy. Use the MF for sensitive subjects. Also great for portraits.

*Very well built
*Very beautifull
*Color and contrast are amazing.
*For using in macro or portrait photos with escellent quality
*Macro 1:1 without accessories
*Excellent lens hood

Weakness:

*Slow and noisy AF

I use my SIGMA like a portrait lens and backup to my amazing Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro USM that I use for Macro Dental Photo only.
The SIGMA presents a decent product with great colors and incredible sharpness. The lens work very well with my EOS A2.
Sigma 105mm EX macro is an excellent optic and a great value for the money. I recommend it to portraits photographers and macro dental photo too.

I thought about buying this lens a few years back. I was not sure until I read all these reviews, and I have to see for myself. I love the lens since the first time I tried using it. The first photograph I took from this lens came out so beautiful. I was amazed by the sharpness and the macro capabilities. The lens is perfect for both macro and portrait work. I could not be happier with the results. My friends know how much I love this lens. It's worth every penny. See for yourself.

Strength:

Sharp as a tack
Very nice handling

Weakness:

As everyone else says, AF is a little slow but very functional

I read all of the reviews on this site and decided I would purchase this lens because I wanted to start some macro photography. Although I am a beginner in photography, the first couple of rolls I exposed were absolutely amazing. The colors were awesome and the lens was the sharpest I have used. To see some of these photos, check my photo.net Macro folder at: http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=128256
The first 8 are from my first roll of prints on Fuji Superia 400. I exposed a roll of Fuji Velvia slides, but those are still being processed and will be posted soon. These digital images are scanned from the prints (slides will be scanned from slide). At $250 used, this lens is a must-have for any Macro photographer.

Strength:

Extremely sharp, well-built, several hundred dollars less than Canon equivalent. Internal focus, with limit switch for AF use. EX finish has been very durable. My overall favorite lens.

Weakness:

Only thing about this lens I don't like is the sliding manual focus ring. I invariably forget to slide it back when switching from AF to MF...

My favorite lens.

***SHARP*** Superlatives omitted but appropriate.

Weakness:

Focuses slower than yer gramma

Very little difference, other than elegance of lens appearance (Nikon wins), and the price just doesn't compare. If one wanted to do macro auto-focus, and fancy automatic stuff with a macor, one might want the Nikon, but who does that with a macro?
