Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Highly practical and portable telephoto zoom lens. The five zoom groups make the length only 121.5mm. With rear focusing, the lens does not change length or rotate during focusing. Any filter effects therefore remain intact. It also makes autofocusing quick and quiet.

Strength:

Not many.. just a regular lense, there aren''t many different features with this than the others.

Weakness:

Not very good quality and it''s not very sharp at 300mm (as someone said before)

Not as good as the other Canon EF Lenses I''ve used.. but it''s decent. If you''re serious about photography, I recommend a different lense, but if youre just a casual or beginner photographer, this could be of some use to you. I''ve taken some pretty good shots with this one but sometimes the pictures turned out a little.. I don''t know how to explain it.. but I didn''t like it at all. Do not purchase this lense unless you wish to just take a vacation with the family and only take a few shots here and there.. for the professional photographers, go for something else. Canon kinda skimped out on this lense. I''m saying this to help you out.

Strength:

lightweight USM reasonably fast

Weakness:

Optics are suitable for snapshots only. Might be acceptable at 100-200 but completely useless for real photography beyond 200mm. A check of the MTF charts for this lens posted at the Canon US website shows it actually is terrible opticlly. Feels cheap, acts cheap (was cheap) MAJOR zoom creep.

This is the worst lens I have ever used.

Strength:

relatively cheap
good quality in the range of 100-200 mm, slightly worse at 300 mm
non-rotating front element
full-time manual focussing
filter size 58 mm - the same as popular EF 28-105/3.5-4.5
light weight
fast and silent autofocus (USM)

Weakness:

picture quality is slightly worse than of 28-105/3.5-4.5, especially at 300 mm
stopping down aperture does not improve the quality
not so solid, but I never had problems for far
relatively slow lens (small aperture at 300 mm), therefore it requires fast film if handholding

good consumer telephoto zoom if on limited budget. Picture quality is worse than EF 28-105 (at 100 mm), EF-L 200/2.8 (at 200 mm) and EF-L 200/2.8+1.4TC (at 280 mm). The combination of used EF-L 200/2.8+1.4TC is better buy than EF 100-300/4.5-5.6

Strength:

Good built quality, light and compact, fast USM AF, FTM, reasonable price.

Weakness:

Image quality OK from 100-200mm range. Not good at 300mm.

Good value for its price. Disappointing at the long end, but good zoom range to complement standard zooms.

Strength:

Cheap, portable and a great portrait lens with flash fill-in at closer ranges, at any focal length.

Weakness:

Gets soft in low light, relatively poor build quality (compared with primes or L-series), but I gave it away and now wish I hadn't! It makes a poor action lens but a great portrait one in the 135-250 range.

If you don't use longer lengths a lot and live somewhere sunny, or use flash, where you can use slower film (eg Kodachrome 64), this is a peach. If you're after action shots etc., go for an L-series.

Model Reviewed: EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM

Strength:

Relatively inexpensive, outstanding focusing (fast & quiet), internal & rear focusing (great for polarizers), light & compact compared to pro lenses, metal mount with solid construction for a consumer lens, distance scale with infrared mark.

Weakness:

Too soft for large prints, though stopped down at 100mm it's reasonably good. Past 200mm it's just horrid. Small aperatures, especially with the long focal length, require a lot of light.

It makes a great snapshot lens on a bright sunny day, but the optics are too poor for much else. I suggest considering the 100-300 f/5.6L, 80-200 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/4L, or 200 f/2.8L (but are about twice the cost, weight, and size).

Customer Service

Great support via email from Canon, but I haven't contacted them regarding this lens.

Model Reviewed: EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM

Strength:

Durable, very fast internal focus with USM, small and light, well designed for the most part, nice lens from 100-200mm

Weakness:

Around 300mm I find that it needs to be stopped down to f11 before it gets real sharp (it's not bad at 5.6, but it is obviously a little soft), my lens has very bad zoom creep, which is really a problem when the lens is mounted on a tripod and pointed down for close-ups

Very good for the money, just needs to be stopped down a little near 300mm to get really sharp pictures.

Model Reviewed: EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM

Strength:

Ring USM gives fast, silent focusing with full-time manual focusing for touchup. Inner focusing gives fast focusing with a non-rotating front element. Decent optics all in all.

Weakness:

Standard weaknesses for consumer telephoto zooms - a bit soft at the long end, and slow.

Unless you can afford pro glass, this is a good choice. It takes very nice pictures for smallish enlargements and Web use. To get the best results, you'll need to stop it down, meaning you'll need a tripod.

This lens is a nice compliment to the Canon 28-105. It's a little soft wide open at 300, but stopping down to f8-11 helps. When used with a 2 element close-up lens like the Nikon 6T, it can be used for macro up to 1:1. No tripod collar, but it balances well for hand-holding.
