Canon EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM provides silent, high speed autofocus with optical performance equal or superior to similiar fixed focal lengths lenses. This remarkable short focal length was achieved by using two replicated aspherical elements that correct optical aberrations including distortion and flare while maintaining high image quality throughout the entire zooming range.

I have seen a lot of complaints in these reviews. It seems like most of the complaints have come from gear junkies that havent even really tried them. It also seems that we havent heard any response from the media which are some of the most to use this lens for work. Some of the facts. Yes there is distortion but what lens doesnt Prime or Zoom. Yes its heavy but so are the 3 or 4 lenses its replacing. Yes to some it feels cheap, compare to what. Ive tested it and would probably buy it if I had the money right now. If you add up the prices for about 3 or 4 primes and filters for most of them yould be spending about as much as this lens is worth.

Strength:

Clear, Sharp, good contrast. A must have, especially for EOS D30 owners.

Weakness:

None yet found.

This is a very good lense, especially useful for Canon D30 owners. With the 1.6 multiplier effect and all. This lense will give you the wide angle view you wouldn't normally get with the D30. Yes, it is a bit pricey but it is a "pro" lense. Over all I would give the lense an all around 5 star rating. I have read alot of negative tales about this lense in this and other review forums, I think some others are just trashing the lense out of frustration or envy...

Strength:

Smallest of Canon's f 2.8 zoom set. In a confined area when you need an extremely wide zoom and a large aperature, it gets the job done.

Weakness:

Prone to flair. The Lens hood so shallow its virtually worthless.

The least-used of my set of three f 2.8 zooms, but it can be the only lens that I have capture an interior existing light architectural shot. In practice I use it only for the range from 17-28 mm and use the 28-70 mm lens for the longer focal lengths in the ulta zoom's range.

Strength:

It is easy returnable.

Weakness:

Too expensive for what you get. Not nearly as sharp as expected or that others claim, distortion, edge blurring, cheap plastic feel and creeky, major vignetting with filters.

I rarely write reviews but this experience was bad enough to want to write one. Let me first say I think generally Canon has some of the sharpest lenses out there. Unfornunatley, this overpriced lump is not one of them. I have been shooting landscapes for a while now and thought I would pick up the lens as I find shooting with primes can be limiting at times. I received the first lens a month ago and wasnt satisfied with the quality so I returned it thinking I just got a bum lens. When the second lens came in I received the same results. The images are worse than taken with the 28-135 IS in my opinion. There is major blurring aroud the edges and the overall shaprness and contrast is not very good. Certianly not what one would expect from a $1200 lens. This isnt the worse lens out there but for $1200 I expect a lot more. I could see if the lens was only $300-$400 but the cheap feel, construction and poor image quality does not justify the cost. I sent it back for a credit. In my opinion this lens is way overpriced and overrated. I give it 2 stars overall. I have seen worse. But I wish I could assign a 0 for the value rating as in my opinion this lens is way overpriced and overrated.

Strength:

> Very fast focusing (I sometimes thought I forgot it on MF cause I didn't feel its focusing).
> Super wide angle, useful especially for D30 owners.
> Very high quality
> Quite light weight comparing to 28-70/f2.8L etc.

Weakness:

> Price!!! (around $1600 in Germany)
> Flare. Hood doesn't help there much.

A very good lens, especially for digital camera owners. However, very expensive (same as 70-200/f2.8!!!).

Strength:

Is sharp stepped down at wide angle. Above average performance at 17mm and small arpeture.

Weakness:

Not so sharp when wide open, Is kind of heavy, doesnt have the L buld quality, COST !!

This would have been a better lens if it was just a 17mm. Its not that good in the 20-35 range in my opinion in terms of overall sharpness. I dont even use it but at 17mm because of this. Despite being a fast lens it is not a good indoor lens as when you have to shoot wide open the image quality isnt that great and the images are a little soft. Very sharp at F8-F11. Sharpness falls off rapidly below f8.0. When I first opened the box and picked up the lens I was a little surprised at the build. It didnt have the 'L' class build. Very plastic feel and it doesnt look like it will take much abuse. Already I have noticed some hairline cracks in the plastic around the lens mount. Canon needs to lower the price. I am a little disapointed but then again this is a wide angle zoom. Zooms are not as sharp as primes and wide angle lenses are generally not sharp either. Considering these facts this lens is not a bad zoom but it certainly isnt the sharpest thing out there for the price. Its an 'OK' lens but nothing great.

Strength:

Great zoom range, nice picture for a zoom.

Weakness:

Far, far, far from being as sharp as a prime. It is very good for a zoom, but by a long shot worse that even a third-party prime. Not sharp stepped down to f16 and higher.

I was very disappointed when I printed 16"x20" from Velvia slide. Same size pronted from slide shot with 90mm Tamron prime is WAY sharper. OK, I did not expect it to be sharp at 2.8, but I expected it to be very good at high apertures, which I use for a greater depth of field when shooting landscapes. Sold it after 2 weeks, have no regrets.

Model Reviewed: EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM

Strength:

Professional standard image quality. Very useful for landscape and photojournal. Superfast autofocus. Strong construction.

Weakness:

Small barrel distortion at wide ends. Depth-of-field scale useless.

If you only do landscape, you might find the EF20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM more suitable. If you need the extra f-stop, this lens is the right one.
