Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Highly portable lens with high optical performance and light weight of 340g. A very practical ultra-wide-angle zoom. The large front lens group minimizes peripheral darkening, and the flare-blocking diaphragm minimizes flare. Also, with lens group 2 being the zoom group, distortion is corrected.

Strength:

Lightweight, very sharp at f/8 onwards, AF works well and quickly, if you need it.

Weakness:

Very soft wide open, not rectilinear, and I'd class it as an excellent 25-35 f/5.6+ optic, which means the Canon 17-35L is a whole lot better for handheld, but maybe not for tripod-mounted within a limited range of zooming. If you do people shots skip it. Get a 28 f/1.8 instread and move back a bit to get everyone in.

Brings a whole new world into your life if you can find foreground subjects of interest, but definitely not a people lens at the wider settings.

Strength:

Compact and quiet in use. Uses common 77mm filters. Good range of viewing and focus. Excellent capability for wide angle landscapes.

Weakness:

Produced some curved lines when tested against grid pattern, and sharpness suffers slightly at widest angle, and widest aperture.

If you are going to be using this lens for anything but hyper-critical use, it should work out fine. I find that I can't see a noticeable loss of sharpness in actual use on landscapes - except at the widest aperture/angle setting. You will need a lens hood - flare would be a real problem otherwise.

Strength:

The lens is built tough and feels very solid. I've only used the lens twice, but it seems to be relatively sharp and has almost un-noticeable distortion. I like how the lens doesn't extend when zooming. The quality seems to improve when you zoom closer to 35mm.

Weakness:

The lens isn't too good at dealing with flare, even with the hood. But what else do expect from a ultra wide angle lens?

This lens is capable of producing very sharp and contrasty images. It needs plenty of available light and a 550EX FLash for total zoom range coverage with it's wide-angle adapter. For the price you pay, you couldn't ask for much more.

Strength:

Small, light, very sharp. Can override AF without flipping the AF/MF switch. Price is decent for a genuine Canon lens.

Weakness:

A little slow, slight barrel distortion at the wide end.

A good choice for a travel lens -- this lens, paired with the 28-135 IS will cover everything from dark church interiors to wide-angle building and landscape shots.

Strength:

Reasonable price and light weight. Close focus ability for zoom. Reasonably sharp, will yield excellent enlargements to 16x20. No venette with filters (77mm). Great for nature photography, hiking. Sharp from f/4 on down. Advanced amateurs and pros will have a use for this lense

Weakness:

Distortion. Don't use it for architectural work. Noticeable barrell distortion at 20mm. Slow f stop.

Great value for fun people pictures, landscapes, and nature. Just don't photograph straight lines with it. They will bend. I find myself using it a lot because it is light weight.

Not an L lens

I do not use this lens often I have to say. In my field of sports and press photography I hardly use wideangle. But when i do need it this lens is easy to use and versatile. Much easier to work with than the bulky 17 - 35. If you need a wideangle Canon lens forget the others buy this !
