Hm?

Bought this lens in a package with my Eos 5 four years ago, and this has been my favourite lens since then. Bought myself a 10 D two months ago, sold my Eos 5, but not this lens. Will never sell it!

Strength:

sharp good colours fast silent

Weakness:

little distortion at 28 mm flares a little some distortions,of course not as good as L series or the FD series BUT it is ok.

This Lens can be a little masterpiece of glass,if you get a good sample you can be sure of very sharp pics almost thru the hole range(28-105) only with little distortion at 28 mm.( Its fast and silent and on a Canon EOS One it makes wonders, you can put this lens on the D 60 or D 1(0) as well,it can stand it and youll get nice pics. Canon ..why did you discontinued it?

Weakness:

Need steady hand during lowlight

I primarily use my Canon d30 to fotoshoot models for illustration reference. I had a 24-85 that was on "extended" loan from a friend and decided to invest in a 28-105. I was initially shipped the wrong lens (a sigma 28-105 f2.8-4) and can't find any reviews comparing this and Canon's 28-105 USM2. I was really disatisfied with the image clarity, it's bulky size, loud motor, and large 72mm dia (hard to find filters). After some time, i finally returned it and picked up canon's. It is a world of difference! The optics is better in my opinion than sigma's - Image clarity is so much more consistent, it's more compact, the USM autofocus is darn quiet and MUCH noticeably faster (i was very surprised at the focusing speed when i tested it out at a camera store). Even though i have to hold the camera more steadier than the sigma's for lowlight, it comes out clearer anyways.

Strength:

USM motor is quick indeed- no hunting 58mm filters are cheap fairly light and compact full time manual focus

Weakness:

performance in low light so-so not as sharp wide open

I purchased this lens to compliment my Elan 7 and to this point have been quite satisfied. Its small size and light weight make it very packable and its versitility comes with only a modest comprimise in performance (vs. a prime lens). I shoot a lot of landscapes and it served me well in Moab last month in that capacity. I do notice a drop in image quality in conditions outside this lens' "comfort range" - low light/ open aperatures- but not to the point of not recommending it. USM is great, build seems pretty stout. A great all purpose lens for the non "L" crowd.

Strength:

USM Build quality Very respectable optics Relatively compact Internal focussing Pretty Excellent general-purpose lens

Weakness:

No macro Fairly soft on the low end Limited zoom range

I purchased this lens as part of a package with my Canon Elan IIE, after doing LOTS of research. I am very pleased. A great travel and general purpose lense. Decent range of reach. Optics, from have, in some cases, been stunning. My relative newness to SLR work limits my ability to fully sing the praises of this lense. It seems solidly built and, despite my babying it, fell prey to a fall onto concrete with only a scratch. No affects on its performance whatsoever. I have challenged it to approximate macro work with positive results. Landscape work has proven very successful and portrait work has been stunning.

Weakness:

canon should include lens hood

This lens is a great upgrade to the canon lens included with most canon cameras. Its range is coverd by most canon add on flashes. colors are great clarity umpteen times better then 28-80 canon don't be afraid of trying this lens. This year I tried to upgrade to a "pro" lens bought the Tokina 28-70 2.8 tried both side by side canon has much warmer colors and just as good if not better sharpness sent Tokina back and kept canon 28-105

Strength:

price, weight, zoom coverage, optical performance above f 6.3

Weakness:

build quality (although fairly durable) wide open shooting

For considerations such as cost, size, weight and optical performance, this lens is a good buy. It is a little weak optically when wide open. But at 6.3 or above, it can give quite acceptable results. Overall build is a little weak for my liking, but my 28-105 lens have served me well over the years. The 28-70 l lens I have is much better, but it also cost $750 more. You can't go wronf using this lens as a general or back-up lens. In it's price range, it is the best.

I have owned this lens for about 5 years now and it has performed beautifully with both my EOS 50e and 3. However having just invested in a D60 the lens itself is not up to it.

Strength:

1) reasonably priced for the quality it delivers 2) useful focal-lenght range 3) lots of clean used lenses to choose 4) light weight 5) decent built (at least metal mount) 6) looks good on any camera 7) fast & silence USM

Weakness:

1) poor trade-in value / keep if for backup 2) doesn't do well with rough condition 3) doesn't come with hood 4) poor optical performance when compared to the more expensive lenses (well I shouldn't)

Decent glass. I would chalk it up for useful 28-105mm range (I'd prefer 24-85 for the 24mm range), light weight, USM motor, and price. Optic performance is better than most other entry-level glasses (par with 24-85). Good choice if you plan to buy/travel with one lens and don't want to spend extra for the fancy 28-135IS or 24-85. If you plan to use it for travel and week-ends, printing mostly in 4x6's and sometimes 8x10's, this lens will offer great value. However, take care when use in hot/humid/dusty area for the extending front optic will suck in air from the environment. Also take care when blowing air into the back of the lens--dust can easily enter through the rather large opening in the back. Most guys (including me) would start out with this lens and soon trade in for more expensive/specialized glasses as they get more serious. I gave mine to my brother and brought a Sigma 24-70 2.8, before recently switching to 28-70L; each offers better optical quality respectively (so does the exponentially higher prices). For these reason, there are lots of good condition 28-105's in the market. Note: I strongly recomend that you take someone experienced along with you when buying used lens. The quiet USM mortor should be considered a blessing because, for the non-Canon lenses, the similar technologies are only available in the more expensive series.

Customer Service

I don't think I'd need it. My dad's antique Ftb + FD50 1.4 still working like it was only been brought last week.
