Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Standard zoom lens with an Image Stabilizer and high zoom ratio. With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using flash or a tripod. Very handy for places where flash is prohibited. Uses ring-type USM for swift, silent autofocus and full-time manual focus. Closest focusing distance is 20 in. (50 cm).

Strength:

Image Stabilization; decent focal length range; USM moter; light weight.

Weakness:

Really low construction quality feel compared to similarly priced Sigma/Tamron (what to talk of a Canon L series lens); lack of seals and large gaps on the zoom mechanism means dust will probably get inside. It really bothers me that for that much money Canon doesn''t include a lenshood (costs $25 mailorder); slow aperture speeds means it has limited use as a portrait lens.

A good travel and casual lens for when you are only carrying one camera. Doesn''t excel at anything, though. I can handhold it reliably three stops slower than a non-IS lens (Canon says you gain two stops).

Customer Service

Haven''t needed it for this lens.

Strength:

Sharp and Contrasty results at all focal lengths.

Weakness:

I wish this was a F2.8L lens. Speaking of which, the 28-70mm f2.8L lens is sharper and has much less distortion.

Canon has done a great job in designing a all in one travel lens. The reason I said travel lens is because of its generous zoom length, and the convenience of Image Stablisation. I would not recommend this lens for portrait or architectural work. F3.5-5.6 is a bit slow for wedding photography, especially in a dark church, hand holding at 1/15 at f5.6 does not produce the sharpest results. The barrel and pincushioning effects are quite visible at wide angle and telephoto. For the price I paid for this lens, no other 3rd party manufacturer can beat it in terms of picture quality and features. The Sigma 28-70mm EX f2.8 is faster, though does not have the end result quality of this lens.

Customer Service

Fast service. Canon Professional Service has a turnaround of 72 hours worldwide. I am fortunate to be a member.

Strength:

is, convenient for a day''s sightseeing roud a city

Weakness:

low contrast, soft at the short end

this was the first ''good'' lens i bought. the range is good, af is fast on eos3, and stopped down to f8-11 the lens is as sharp as you need. however, contrast is not too great, its rather soft 28-35ish and wide open. when i got my hexar, i released how much better a prime can be

Strength:

Ok, you''re not that lucky. I''ve got to say something right? This lens continues to amaze me. On occasion I get a little trigger happy and take a picture before I give my flash a chance to rest... and where I expect to see a blurry picture I find that a relatively useful picture has developed. It may not be perfect but I think it shows how great this lens'' abilities are. So not only are the optics fantastic on this lens but the image stabilizer makes this lens indispensible. It has even taken the spot in my camera bag where my slightly faster 28-105 lens once was. I''ve shot down to 1/60 with decent results. Teamed up with the extension tube EF25, you can get some really close up pix too. Defeinitely a must have for your camera bag.

Weakness:

The only thing that could possibly make this lens better would be a UD lens and a L beef-up.

WOW!!! I would say more, but then I would only take away from the lens.

Strength:

Nice Zoom range. IS.

Weakness:

Somewhat pricey for consumer lense.

I've had the lense for several weeks. IS is great but the image quality is decent. Definitely not an L series lense. But a very good consumer lense even with IS just a bit pricey for a consumer.

Strength:

Good range, Image Stabilization (if needed)

Weakness:

Could be faster- feels cheap- price

This is a decent lense, but the quality is definately not up to the Canon L standard as some reviews have suggested. The I.S. feature is good, but most of my shots are from a tripod, so it is a little bit of a waste. Overall a good snapshot lense. Image quality is good- (better than some othere consumer grade lenses by Canon) but not up to the L standard.

Customer Service

Very Good- Called for technical assistance twice on my A2E and they were right there with the answer.

Strength:

Image stabilisation; large zoom range from 28 to 135;

Weakness:

Small aperture - a bit dark, and doesn't allow for nice blurred backgrounds. Lens hood is not included - for what is an expensive lens! Construction is so-so. I don't like zooms constructed in such a manner because they tend to 'suck-up' dust. The lens hood was also very stiff when I first put it on the lens - this was also the case for a colleague of mine who owns a 28-135.
Distortion at 28mm is also very noticeable - not surprising for such a zoom.

A wonderful lens, there's nothing quite like hand-holding a lens at 1/10th of a second and still getting sharp results. I've even gone down to 1/2th of a second and got sharp photographs. Unfortunately, IS doesn't compensate for subject movement. I've used this lens for concert photography, but combined with 800 ISO film...only when the lighting on stages was very bright, or when the people on stage did not move much were the photographs very good. The lens is also very 'dark' so focusing is difficult. IS though allows for interesting blurred effects (of people waving their arms at a concert for example).

Customer Service

Very efficient. After a week of use in Tanzania, the manual focusing ring on the lens locked-up and thus needed to be sent off to get fixed when I got back. The cost was high, but the service was rapid.

Strength:

Outstanding lens for general use. The IS has produced excellent hand held results at relatively slow shutter speeds and in low light. Great zoom range, sharp throughout. AF is fast, quiet, and very accurate, and this lens allows you to manually adjust the focus even in AF mode.

Weakness:

Somewhat heavy, and lens will zoom if held face down. Wish it had a faster max. aperture, although that would probably put this lens out of my (and most consumers') price range.

This is an excellent lens which has rarely left the front of my camera (EOS 10-S) since I got it. I reccomend this lens to photographers of any and every skill level. It is definitely worth the price.

Model Reviewed: EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Strength:

Very versatile, good zoom range. IS works a treat especially for stoping down and low light. I have had excellent results in low light even after a few drinks. Got some fab stuff in an old winery after a marathon tasting.

Weakness:

Double bayonet is a little wobbly and the zoom has a tendency to operate on its own (especially with a hood) Nothing that effects performance.

Great consumer lens, I would recommend it to anyone, especially if they were considering one of the Tamaron's (28-200 and 28-300)as an all purpose lens. I would not trade mine for anything

Model Reviewed: EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Strength:

Sharp, IS, versatile zoom range make it a near perfect general purpose zoom that stays on the body 90% of the time.

Weakness:

Heavy, and its auto zoom while strolling along. Canon should have provide anti-slip mechanism. Also it will be nice if it fits 77mm filter.

This is an ideal lens for travel as it provides a well covered zoom range that meets most applications¢ñ without change lens. The IS function provide additional convenience saving the need of a tripod for many shooting situation. Highly recommend for any EOS user. Hood is a must, though it is a bit expensive.
