Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM is the first Canon lens in its focal length range and provides photographers with additional creative latitude in one lens. It uses the company’s patented Super Inner Cam design to achieve the closest minimum focusing distance in its class. Two aspherical surfaces are incorporated for high image quality at all focal lengths, and a Micro USM makes the new EF 28-200mm lens the only zoom in its class to feature Ultrasonic Motor technology for high-speed and silent autofocusing.

Strength:

Close focusing, non-rotating front lens, doesn't get soft at the end of its range.

Weakness:

None so far.

An excellent lens! I was amazed at its sharpness even all the way out at 200 (I had heard and read that other similar zooms get soft at the upper end of the range). Focuses very close. It's so nice not to have to change lenses for this range, and still get very sharp results.

Strength:

great range

high quality build

internal focusing means front element does not rotate

USM is fast and quiet

well balanced on Elan 7E

no zoom creep

manual focus ring actually has a good feel

Weakness:

excessive flare

dedicated lens hood is ABSOLUTELY necessary or large front element will flare out

f5.6 at 200mm

micro USM does not allow simulatenous manual focus

expensive when compared to Sigma or Tamron counterpart

This is a great walk around lens for everyday use. The 28-200 range really is nice and you will definitely miss less shots. Shots are sharp at 200mm, if they are not it is because most people who use these lenses don't use a tripod.

A lens like this does have its caveats. It is slow and inappropriate for indoor use without a flash. When it is zoomed out to 200mm it looks like a bazooka.

Overall good vacation and travelling lens, but best paired with a fast 50 for low light conditions.

Strength:

Long enough focal length to cover just about any normal travel photography. Great close focusing, 9 1/2 inches working distance even when zoomed to 200

Weakness:

I wish it felt more solid. There is not a real good place to grip the lens when placing it on the camera or taking it off.

The weakness I noted do not take away from what I think of as very good optical quality. I shot about 6 or 7 rolls through it before I decided to keep it. I shot identical pictures with my 35-135 lens to compare. The 28-200 is definitely sharper on the edges and corners. Center sharpness is very close. I use and Elan II and Elan 7. Value rating is 4 because it should include a lens hood for the price. Quality is a 5.

Strength:

The convenience of one do-it-all lens, within a reasonable price for the optics. Great range, especially for travel and outdoors photography. It work fabulously in portraits, sports, landscape and close-ups.Fast lens thanks to the USM technology

Weakness:

Bulkier and heavier than most zoom lenses that come with a slr camera.
Obstructs the built-in flash when extended. Needs a hood

The perfect zoom for traveling and outdoors. Virtually there's nothing you can shoot at with this lens. Ín my opinion its versatility makes it worth its price

This is my second review of this lens. Since I cannot find many reviews of this lens, I had to do it by myself. I borrowed the EF50f1.8 mark I lens from my friend and shot together with my 28-200 lens at 50 mm. I shot both lens at 50 mm at maximum aperture at f1.8 for mark I and f4.0 for 28-200 and f8 for both lens on a paper full of letters. As you can expect, even in 6 by 4 photos, the best result comes from EF50f1.8 mark I at f8. The second best is 28-200 at f8, third is EF50f1.8 mark I at f1.8 and the fourth is 28-200 at f4. The third and fourth are pretty close. But you can see clear difference between second and third.

EF50f1.8 mark I is supposed to be much sharp than consumer lens, such as 28-200. When I first got the result, I was a little bit disappointed about EF50f1.8 mark I. Then I am delighted to find that my EF28-200 is really good!! When I look back the pictures I took with this lens, they are really great( the sharpness and the color), especially with Fuji Reala film.( I don't shot slide film.)

It looks unfair to compare a super consumer zoom lens with a 50 mm prime lens. The result is better than what I have expected. Next time, maybe I should compare EF28-200 with 28-105, 28-135 IS and 24-85, which are considered to be good consumer lens.

Also it focus really fast with my Elan 7E. I have taken pictures of seagull flying in the sky and got some amazing results.

Bottom line, This is a very good consumer lens, more than enough for you daily need as long as you are not making a living with it. Take a 50 mm lens, either f1.4 or f1.8, with you when you shot available light without flash.
