Strength:

Lightweight
Useful general purpose zoom range
Reasonable quality, and even good compared to others in its class

Weakness:

Plasticky feeling
Flimsy construction
Plastic mount

Used the lens for 6 months mounted on Canon's EOS500n (same as RebelG). It's a good general purpose beginner's lens. Surprisingly sharp and good performer at f:8 to f:16. Performance drops when wide open, especially when shooting far subjects...
Construction seems flimsy but I never had any durability problem with it.

It's a very good bargain especially for the money, and will allow beginners to get reasonably good shots. BUT if you can afford the 28-105 or better - you should prefer them to this one.

Strength:

This lens is really lightweight and inexpensive. Furthermore, it delivers fair optical quality.

Weakness:

The zoom ring tends to move quite jerkily, while the manual focusing ring is clearly lacklustre.

I think this lens is quite a go-getter for its price, and I am pleased it came with my Elan II. For quality shots, I always use the even cheaper 50mm f/1.8 :)

Strength:

very decent colors and sharpness.
very light.
decent AF speed.

Weakness:

plastic feel.
zoom ring is over-smooth.

well, this is a must if you are low on budget. it's good to start if you just bought your camera. the quality pictures that gives are "decent". i've been using it for 2 years, and i don't have a major complain about it. with time, you might want to upgrade to 28-70L (if you have the money).
it has a plastic feel. it feels like it will crash in half if it falls on the ground. the zoom ring is not tough. sometimes it will slightly move when shooting upwards (to the sky).

Strength:

Good quality pictures.
Exellent for "normal" photographers, professionals may want to invest more money...

Weakness:

Haven´t found any worth mentioning.

As I already mentioned, I´m not a professional photographer. The pictures I´ve taken from my trips in many situations (sunshine, dark, cloudy, indoors, outdoors...) have been fine to me, nothing bad to say. The few bad pictures I´ve taken haven´t been because of a bad lense... the man behind the camera isn´t always thinking...

I recommend this lense to all not-so-professional photographers.

Not extremely sharp
Focus ring is small and to smooth for my taste

This lens came with my EOS 3000 (Rebel G) and I've been using it since. It's not extremely sharp and as my experience and knowledge as grown I've started looking for better quality lens. From other reviews I get the impression that this lens will perform best at 50mm at f8/16, I will make an effort to use it in those conditions. It's not that great for night photography, the sigma 50mm lens performs a lot better. I'm looking to purchase to canon 28-135 USM IS lens to go with my Elan 7E

Strength:

I have enjoyed using this lens as an entry level all purpose lens. While the optic quality may not be that of a pro lens neither is the price and frankly my unexperienced eye has not been able to detect a difference in the image quality of the Canon or any of several higher end lenses.

Weakness:

None so far. The light weight and over all construction does not appear all that rugged but after over a year of shooting everything from horse shows to paintball wars I have had no problems and my pictures look great.

When I'm unsure what I will be shooting this lens is the one that stays on my Canon. It is a wondefully versatile lens with a nice entry level price.

Customer Service

Canon is quite capable of handling any problems.

Strength:

It's cheap, light, and easy to use.

Weakness:

The bayonet is made out of plastic, so every time the lense needs to be changed, one must be very careful.

For beginners and intermediate users, this will be adequate. I have used it to take some wedding photos and enlarge it to 8x10, and I have found the sharpness to be alright. Of course it's not first rate if compared to the L-series or some other Zeiss optics, but for the performance/price ratio, it's alright. I am saving 5 stars for some other lenses. I will give 3.5 stars, since it's better than average, but round up to 4 stars.

Strength:

Averagely sharp, lightweight. Adequate for a beginner.

Weakness:

No, but cheap design doesn't inspire confidence.

OK if you are a beginner and not too critical about the average build and optical quality.
