Strength:

Handling Versatility Close-Up capabilities Built (it's a tank!) Reliability

Weakness:

Ok, it's heavy--but I like it.

Just great!! This lens is the one for going "light" meaning with only one lens. Especially nice on vacation. I use it generally for landscapes and am extremely happy with the results. The handling in connection with an EOS3+booster is perfect for me. It's very well balanced and can even be used without a tripod with good results. It's THE travel lens for me.

Strength:

Versatile It give very good picture form 35-350mm, I have enlarge the picture to 16x20 good

Weakness:

Cannot use 2x and 1.4 X converter, if you use , it cannot focus to infinity It can focus manually within a few hundred meters Heavy, But not as heavy as 3 Prime lens. Pull and push zoom can easily accustom But the dust problem not likely to be solve

This is a versatile lens with a reasonable sharpness and price. You can use it to take landscape, portrait as well as wide animals. It is one lens solution. Do not trust other cheaper band 10X lens, it is not as well as this one. But the weakness of this len is that it can easily get dust though the push and pull focus mechanism. What a shame.

Range & optical quality & build

Weakness:

It's a tad heavy but not as heavy as another lens or another body with another lens!

I am basically a street photograhpher (reportage!) & if you have to choose just one lens this is it. The range is all you could want & when you don't have time to change lenses or use another body this is perfect. The focusing is fast & its bomb proof!

Strength:

Extremely versatile. Sturdy and durable. NICE GLASS! Cost Effective solution to multiple lenses. Convenient manual setting. Tremendous close-up shooting at 135mm. Tremendous at sporting events. Fantastic for "safe" wildlife shooting. Shoot a polar bear at 100 meters, pick nose hairs, then turn and shoot the smile on your wife's face 4 feet away all with one lens in a matter of seconds.

Weakness:

WAY HEAVY! (but then it better be for $1,500) Ackward in a crowd. (but you get a lot of looks cuz it looks really professional) Vignettes at 350mm but this can be minimized by removing the lens hood. Fstop is limiting. Slide out zoom and lens lock can "catch ya" at an inopportune moment. Filters are not cheap!

This is literally the very best lens that I have ever owned. From the Wedding Chapel downtown to the arctic circle, no other one lens I have ever owned will fill these shoes. If shot intelligently with the limitations of the lens taken into consideration, you can't go wrong with this stout L series star. Buying three different lenses to do the same as this one lens is truly not as cost effective. Shop around for the best price. The glass is wonderful and flawless. The softness experienced at 350mm can be compensated for by hitting the sticks and stopping to f22+.

Strength:

Very wide and useful focal range, Rugged construction, Lighting fast and quiet autofocus (USM), Superb optical quality.

Weakness:

Heavy especially with my EOS 3, booster, and flash. Pull-push zoom, but you can get used to it quickly.

This is a very SUPERB lens from Canon. The engineering is ground-breaking. I use it on my EOS 3, and it focus lighting fast and very accurate, plus dead-silent. The lens is proven to be very useful for any kind of photography, I do a lot of people, wedding, studio and landscape with this lens. If you are looking for 10x zoom with the best optical quality, look no further.

Strength:

- Huge range. - Relatively consistent and good optical performance throughout the zoom range. - Build quality. - Cool hood ;)

Weakness:

- Weight (I don't mind much, though)

I've only had this lens for a couple of months, but I already like it a lot. The versatility and ruggedness of this lens makes it a welcome alternative to lugging along lots of kit. I personally don't mind carrying tons of equipment around, but sometimes it just isn't practical. Often a little extra weight is preferrable to juggling two or three light lenses. As for the image quality, there is a certain amount of distortion in the far ends and some loss of contrast when you go long, but well within acceptable limits. Otherwise the optical performance is very good, and the close focusing distance @ 135 m.m. is great! The build quality is very very good. This is one of my favourite features about this lens (and other Canon L lenses). It's a releif not having to worry about the lens being bumped around a little by whatever is going on around you while you're trying to get that good shot. Some reviews I've read about this lens state that it is "non-L" quality. My expirience is the exact opposite. This lens will run circles around any non-L zoom lens any day of the week. No question.

Strength:

High build quality, excellent optics, 8 blade diaphram for good out of focus blur. Color rendition and 'pop' are quite good. Excellent range, with 35mm being just wide enough for most situations. High quality optics across the entire zoom range, which is quite an engineering feat.

Weakness:

Heavy (3 pounds), huge with hood, and at 350mm. A push-pull design, which I don't like much. I prefer twist zoom. The push-pull action on mine isn't as smooth as I would like, but I bought mine used, so it may be only my lens with this issue. Still, zooming is accurate enough. The lens doesn't "handle" as well as a 70-200 2.8/4 since it extends when zooming. Also, this is a very expensive lens. The sigma/tokina/tamron 28-300 lenses are cheap compared to this one. (I have never used one, so I don't know about optical comparisons.)

This is the "one lens solution" if you want high quality optic and "L" build quality. The reason to own this lens is if you shoot documentary, sports, events, etc. and need to change the framing often. I find I use it most in the 35-200 range, rarely needing to go out to 350. I think this would be a great lens at a wedding, with an EOS 3 and 550EX flash, or a soccer game, volleyball, etc.

Weakness:

Push-Pull zoom weight price

A good lens, but not worth the price. I had just as good of results with a Canon 28-135 IS, as well as a Canon 100-300. If you are not a profesional, you will not notice the difference. Save your money and keep practicing. Also, this is a tank, and must be used with a good tripod.

Amazing range, capable of taking professional photos given the right subject matter. That "if I can only take one lens on vacation" lens.

Weakness:

Does most things well, nothing really exceptional but if your cut down to only one lens this one carries the range and gets the job done in 80% of the situations for the amateur.
