manual focus is not the greatest setup .

This is a great lens for the price . I have taken many a fine picture with it .
It's light compact and has a great focus mechanizm .
I have tested it against some primes and it was only slightly off in sharpness etc..
People say its no good because of the cheap feel of the plastic . After three years mine is still fine .

I don't know why some reviewers here consider this lens as that bad. My copy is very sharp. I had the lens offered quite accidentally when I went to a small camera shop in Hanoi and after putting the lens on my camera and took a few testing shots I really surprised that this lens is very sharp, contrast and good colour at all focal range and apertures. I compared its pictures to my much more expensive Canon 70-200 f2.8 L lens and found that pictures are as nearly sharp as Canon 70-200 L. Only thing I complain is the lens looks very cheap and bad construction, no manual focus ring. I would recommend this lens for beginners and those budget is tight but want to have telezoom lens.

Cheap cheap cheap. picks up exactly where my 18-55 leaves off. USM focues quickly

Plastic Mount, USM screws up, extends to double the length of the lense at full zoom, lense hood sticks out so far changing filters without removing the hood is impossible.

Price paid in Canadian. Being a fine art printmaking student on a limited budget, this was the only 200mm or so lense I could afford. Considering it's half the price of the next model up, it's not bad. Get what you pay for. When in crowded areas, and need a close up, I can take pictures behind people by throwing on my 12mm extention tube, and cranking up the ISO to hand shoot. Pictures aren't perfect, but better than not having one at all due to the situation. i tried a few shots on the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM in store, and drooled. kinda heartbroken this was all I could afford.

Decided to buy an affordable zoom lens for everyday use. I got no extra money to buy myself a L lens and I have tried Tamron 70-300 (or 75-300 ... really forgotten) before so I decided to buy this afforadable Canon zoom lens. It works well with my 300D (Digital Rebel). Please see "Strengths" and "Weaknesses" below.

Sharp. Focuses quickly. Cheap.

Seems fragile.

I compared landscape photos to my 24-70 L at 70mm and it stood up surprisingly well. Pictures were sharp. Good contrast. And the lens focuses quickly. Photos at 200mm need Photoshop to lighten up (just like most lenses in its class). Also, build quality seems a little on the cheap side but what do you expect with a sub $200 lens. All-in-all great value for the price.

Light

USM at max focal lenght very week.

Purchase a Digital rebel as well the 55-200mm. Used one lense for a week and had the USM auto focus freeze on me. Returned the lense without a problem, and had it replaced. Used the new lense for another week and had countless problems with the USM not focusing properly, in mid day outside. Returned the lense again, but would not purchase another.
