Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Incorporating Canon’s second generation Image Stabilization technology, this telephoto zoom responds in as little at 0.5 seconds, while providing up to three stops of correction for camera shake. Its AF system has been refined for better response time and tracking speed. And even the new 8-blade circular aperture offers a more pleasing out-of-focus image. Constructed to pro standards, this fast zoom is also highly resistant to dust and moisture, too.

I use it on my 20D and gives me a tele zoom range from 112 to 320 mm. Superb build. Size and weight are in balance with 20D but with BP. AF is super fast and accurate. F/2.8 is almost as sharp as f/8. 200mm (320mm), f/2.8 and 1/50s with IS gives printsharp pictures! FF lens on the APS-C sensor has no vignette or distortion. Colors, resolution and handling can’t go any better than this. 77mm Filter thread is same as my 10-22mm and 24-105mm. With this superb image quality you don’t bother the size, weight or price. It makes you feel mighty and confident.

Strength:

Sharp, good color, easy to use the IS feature, IS does work great both horizontal or vertical. Built like a pro lens should be.

Weakness:

None on either my 20d or my EOS 3 film body.

This is my best lens. I do motor sports. See langley-speedway and hit photo gallery. There are over 400 images on that web most wwere taken with the 70-200 IS and the rest were all taken with 2 other L lenses. The 24-70 2.8 and the 17-40 4.0. They are too great. I got rid of all my other lenses for the L lenses. The 70-200 is a bit heavy BUT WORTH the weight in images that I can sell!!! On my Canon EOS 3 film body I have 100% deep color images. On faces it is almost too sharp!!

Strength:

Excellent Shaprness, contrast and colour. Excellent Build Quality. Bright f/2.8 Aperture IS has achieved good results with shutter speed of 1/30th Sec at 200mm Quiet ultrafast focus. Excellent handling. Great results with Teleconvertor (x1.4)

Weakness:

Weight is a tad heavy but thats just down to good glass and lots of it!

Superb quality images with great colour contrast and sharpness. Possibly Canon's best ever Telezoom

Customer Service

Excellent - Had to ask what tele's and extension tubes I could use. Info. mailed to me same day.

Strength:

fast and accurate AF, 2.8, built like a tank, IS, razor sharp optics - crisp across the entire zoom range, very high quality glass, constant manual focus, weather sealed, and it does some beautiful background blur wide open.

Weakness:

1. price...if you pay retail 2. Weight -- at 5#, make sure you bring your mono or tri pod. 3. It is not a prime -- but I was looking for a zoom!

This is an incredible lens on my 20D! Got the camera for Christmas and this lens in April. I wish I had this lens from day one. I have used it for shooting theater and spring sports (Baseball, Softball, Tennis) with great success. I had heard some negatives about coupling with a 2x extender, but the only disadvantage I can see is the loss of 2 stops. Daylight outdoors this is not a problem. For low light situations, I still have the 70-200 without the extender! No serious sports photographer should be without this lens. With the extender, it is still cheaper than the 100-400 L.

** 17-40 L -- as good as it is, the 70-200L blows it away in image quality. Two different purposes, but I definitely like the 70-200 better and use it far more often. ** Sigma 70-300 -- ok, so it is only similar in the zoom range. The 70-200 L is faster, sharper, richer colors, and the list goes on.

Strength:

Sharpness, built like a tank, nice case and hood

Weakness:

the switches right by your focus ring. Your hand can easily trip the switches into the wrong mode.

This is one awesome lens! I now sit here sick that I bought my 10D 9 months ago with kit lens and saved my money to buy "L" lens. The Auto focus locks on to your subject with lightning speed. The sharpness and clarity is so incredible, it makes you look a couple of times at the picture and go, WOW! It defiantly can make a beginner look like one knows what they are doing. Not to mention the looks people give you when you point that beast at a subject.

Strength:

Speed, IS, built like a tank,

Weakness:

Price. Almost too sharp in some situations, you see any blemishes in the subjects skin.

I love this lens! It is my main lens and stay on the camera most of the time. I do weddings and other portraits so this lens is my bread and butter. The IS is amazing. I can get some wonderful available light shots in some crappy wedding venues. I have gone into a few locations worried but always came out great with this lense. In my opinion the color is great, very natural and vibrant with pro film. I have also not noticed any distorition or softness.

Never had to use it.

Strength:

Awesome image quality; built like a tank; IS is magic; gorgeous bokeh; ultra fast AF; very close focusing; works beautifully with EF 1.4 II extender; sharp, sharp, sharp; did mention it's sharp? excellent physical construction with meticulous attention to detail; beautiful white draws attention and earns you immediate respect

Weakness:

Focus/IS switches are inadvertently tripped very easily; sore arms after shooting 12 hours with this tank

This is the sharpest zoom I have ever used. The image quality is outstanding, even when compared to prime lenses. Image stabilization makes shots possible than would otherwise be the case and even works on a tripod. I use this lens for my weddings and portraits and the results are incredible. Often the lens is TOO sharp and shows the subjects imperfections that you normally wouldn't see (uneven lipstick, globs of eyeshadow, etc). It also works beautifully with the 1.4 II extender with virtually no loss of quality. Unlike the non-IS version, this lens is totally rain proof. I shot a horse show in pouring down freezing rain and the lens was coated in a sheet of ice. It worked great with no leaks or steaming/fogging of the internal lenses. This lens has revolutionized my photography and it never leaves my camera. I highly recommend it.

Strength:

-sharpness (even wide open) -ultra fast AF -build quality

Weakness:

-heavy (but what to expect of 200mm f2.8??) -cost (but you get what you pay for)

I use this lens on a 1D MARK II, and the lens is one big performer. Build quality is superb, perfect finishing. Autofocus is extremely fast on this lens, HSM of this lens is one fast engine, this in combination with f2.8 and the MARK II makes the AF faster then fast, realy. IS works great, makes it possible tho make shots at 1/50 sec without a prob @200mm, sometimes even 1/20 sec (with bit luck). About the optics, man o man, this is one sharp lens, even wide open razorsharp, not softness at all, when using @f4 or higher sharpness all around, almost can't believe it isn't a prime. colors are neutral, maybe a bit to the warm side but actualy not mentionable. contrast is good (like most canon glas). Flare, till now never had flare with the lens, even in hard conditions. Cromatic aberation is none, just one shot in extreem condition (reflection on metal in bright sunlight) there was a tiny tiny bit of cromatic aberation to see but only to see when you look very good.
