Strength:
Incredibly sharp, nice and light, smooth and quick auto-focus, solid build.
Weakness:
None. This is the most amazing lens I''ve ever used! I never thought that one lens alone could make photography so much fun. *Razor* sharp, super fast auto-focus and amazingly light. If you''re thinking about taking the plunge, stop thinking and just buy it - you''ll never look back. |

no tripod mount (but I got the black one for the 80-200L and 200 2.8 for $30 used) lens hood is huge This is a wonderful lens. I have owned the 80-200 f2.8 and used the 70-200 f2.8 and if you don''t need that extra stop, this lens is far superior. It is leaps and bounds lighter and smaller. It is sharper and contrastier. You just have to sacrifice the extra stop of light... which I have been with faster film. GREAT LENS! Similar Products Used: 70-200 2.8 L 80-200 2.8 L 75-300 USM IS |

Strength:
built qualitiy- internal focusing and zooming prevents dust from entering the lens. the lens fits right in to my palm and feels very sturdy. the lens hood is huge and thus performs as a great protection supplement. optical quality- this lens has some great stuff to offer- it''s super sharp and shows very little distortion. flare control is much better than in other lenses i''ve used. focusing- ultra sonic motor is so great- very fast and sound-free focusing with full time manual focusing override. also, the lens can focus down to 1.2 meters, which is closer than the f2.8 and the IS versions. comfort- I belive the best equipment is worthless if the user doesn''t feel comfortable with it. this lens is very comfortable- well balanced, smooth focusing and zooming and has well placed controls.
Weakness:
67mm filter thread is some what odd. I would prefer having a 72mm filter thread which is more common among canon lenses. I prefered the f4 version over the f2.8 for weight, size, filter size and price. the f2.8 has many advantages but not for x2 the price (although a professional photojournalist will think differently). other than the wierd filter thread size, this lens was a great buy. I use it for landscape (aparture can be closed down to f32!), wildlife (close, silent and fast focusing) and some photojournalism and wedding photography (light weight and compact). Strength:
Sharp, contrasty, decisive AF, close focusing (1.2m which is pretty good for a 70-200 lens), easy on the arms and shoulders, solid construction, UD and Flourite elements in a neat and affordable package.
Weakness:
Slight pincushion (though not as much as that of the Sigma), 67mm filters, no tripod collar. Definitely the most Bang for the Buck for any lens in this category. Build quality is high, so is manufacturing tolerance. Bought it after reading all the positive reviews here and elsewhere plus going thru the MTF from photodo and comparing MTF between it and 2 other top dogs (70-200 2.8L & 70-200 2.8 EX HSM). Seems this lens is pretty good at f4 and holds very well against its 2 rivals. At f4 and above all 3 are about equal. I figured, if I''m going to shoot at f4 (I want my shots as high res as possible, which both the 2.8 lenses weren''t at f2.8) I might as well get the f4 lens (save money for other things) When my first roll of Velvia came back I was impressed to say the least (I already get pretty impressive results with my 28-135IS so the results from this lens didn''t give me the chills). Sharp, wonderful colour, fantastic detail even wide open, did I say sharp? Even sharper than my 28-135IS but then this is L territory! AF is just as fast as the 28-135IS, but seems more decisive. A definite plus! Overall, I''ve got absolutely no regrets. Even changed from an Elan 2E to a 3 just so I can AF at f8 (2x telecon) with this lens! Anybody looking at this lens should just go out and get it. You won''t regret it. Customer Service Not as yet. Knock on wood. Similar Products Used: None |

Sharp, sharp, sharp! Could double as a samurai sword! But really folks, this is the lens to buy if you are looking to introduce yourself into the fine world of "L"! Super fast and quiet AF, feels like you could run over it with a tank, and so comfortable to hold, you forget it is there! Almost...but definitely a lens that should be considered before the Sigma 2.8=weighs less and is slightly sharper (or so the MTF graphs tell us).
Weakness:
Yeah, it is only an f4, but treat yourself to some Fuji Provia 400F slide film and the added stops will balance that out, but you''ll still have very good color saturation. And who shoots football with slower than 800 speed at night even with a 2.8? A 70-200mm f2.8L IS with a 2x TC L II will be my next big investment. I''ll give myself 6 months though...:) Other than that, this lens is a perfect creation by Canon! Give us a tripod mount though! And no more 67mm filters! But neither of these should keep anyone from buying it unless they have cash for the 2.8. Wow! This is my first Canon "L" lens. I decided to get one after being very disappointed with the optics of my older 75-300mm, but being thoroughly impressed with a 50mm 1.8. On Photodo.com, the 50mm 1.8 is rated very close to the 70-200mm f4L, so I thought why not? I almost bought a used 80-200mm f2.8L, but after spending so much time looking for one, I gave up. Found this one on Ebay for $550 from a retailer so it included the full warranty and $100 rebate. All I can say is FAST focusing, QUIET, and unbelievably easy to manual focus (I almost never use AF for college football). Very light for an L lens as well, and balances perfectly with my A2/VG-10 grip. A very comfortable shooting combo! Customer Service Haven''t had to use. lightweight, Fast AF and Good optical quality
Weakness:
none so far I finally sold my 2-year-old Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 HSM APO EX for this lens. It is lightweight, compact yet robust in construction. It greatly enhances handholding capability. Great AF speed, unnoticable vignetting, excellent colour reproduction no matter at the wide end or long end at all aperture setting are all the good things of this little jewel. The focusing distance limiter is also a great plus when shooting under backlit occassion and for moving objects. No regret for selling the 2.8 one for gaining mobility, better AF speed and optical quality at the expense of one F stop. Weakness:
none I tend to be somewhat of a fanactic about researching purchases before I make them especially when it involves lenses. This began after finding out that most manufacturers have such a wide range of products with regard to quality. After reading all of the reviews on two different sights and calling the company I decided to purchase the 70-200. I also thank the photographers that I contacted by email. I was somewhat hesitant because Pop. Photog wasn''t real impressed with the lens. They were especially concerned about its close focus capabilities. I do not have their testing capabilities but I did shoot a brick wall up close at the 200 focal length and with an 8x loupe found the edge to edge sharpness about perfect. I also took a close up of my elderly mothers face from across a picnic table and found the sharpness to be astounding. While looking through the loupe I noticed that she had the slightest dry skin on her cheek that I didn''t notice in person. To my eyes the 70-200 is as sharp as my 300 f4L. The best testing technology may say otherwise but I don''t care. I shot photos of a B17 bomber with both lenses and didn''t see a difference in color or sharpness. I also shot my nephews wedding with three lenses and the closeups from the 70-200 were the images that were picked for the enlargements. My brother who is a Nikon fanatic couldn''t be happier. I believe for the money it can''t be beaten. Customer Service N/A Similar Products Used: canon 300 f4L, canon 28-105 usm, sigma 50 ex macro |
