Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The EF 70-200mm f4L USM lens is a compact, lightweight, high-performance L-series telephoto zoom. It offers a similar optical performance to the EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM, but at a lower cost, making the lens suitable for both professional and enthusiast photographers.

Strength:

-contrast, color and sharpness -price (for such a lens) -built quality

Weakness:

-weigth -no tripod ring sold with it, I bought the black version of the tripod ring (tripod mount ring A (B)), it works and fits perfectly and you can save $40 comparing to the white version (tripod mount ring A (W)).

I use it on a 10D for 2 months, and I got really good results. Contrast and color are really good.It is one of the sharpest lens I have ever used, even from f/4. Focus is fast and quiet.

Strength:

The cost! A steal! Everything! Razor sharp. Three thumbs AF, Three thumbs MF, Three thumbs Color and contrast, Three thumbs Built like a tank, three thumbs

Weakness:

No tripod collar included, but you need it if your serious about your photography and equipment. Without it, puts A "LOT" of stress on your camera body! Things cost a lot, but worth it in the long run! Need a Excellent tripod or High ISO's for razor sharp photos!

This is an excellent zoom lens at an excellent price. 2.8 is excellent, but twice the cost. You want a serious zoom, go with this zoom! This is a "PRO" lens at a low cost! Use your tripod with this lens! Razor sharp on a tripod with MF, also AF, but go MF if your serious!

Strength:

Image quality Build Quality Internal focus and zoom functions

Weakness:

While light weight for what it offers the lens is quite long and may well not fit in your current camera bag.

Certainly one of Canon's best "walk-around" lenses. For outdoor photography, especially if you shoot print film (I'm using mostly Portra 400 UC these days) the lens is more than fast enough. At about half the weight of the f2.8 version it is, for my purposes the better choice, regardles of price. The lens produces images that are sharp and contrasty throughout its range even wide open. You are not likely to get any closer to prime lens quality in a zoom lens. Focusing is fast, quite and sure. The lens is simply a pleasure to use, even better than I had anticipated.

Strength:

1. sharp even wide-open 2. lightweight (if compared to "big brother" 70-200/2.8L) 3. 67 mm filter threads matches 24-85EF 4. fast focus (especially when limited to 3m - +INF); not so fast as 100/2.8 USM but still very operative 5. focus & zoom rings both are very usable (rubber-coated) 6. lens hood included 7. solidly built (of course, it's "L")

Weakness:

1. an expert who did the repair said that "some inner parts mostly from the back of lens are not metal but plastic" 2. no IS version, need high ISO speeds or negative films in low light conditions 3. the tube design isn't perfect - sometimes is difficult to mount & dismount it 4. no tripod collar included (not big regrets, but sold separately for 70 USD)

Very nice lens, really smaller and cheaper than 70-200/2.8L (IS) Sharp even wide open High-speed focus (thanks to USM) Small and compatible filter threads (67 mm), can be complemented vs. EF24-85 Attention EOS30/33 users: this lens will stress your mount; when attached it will be really safer to hold the lens, not camera. There is a good lens case for 70-200/4L, LowePro 3.

Customer Service

okay, from sivma.ru the entire optical block (a telesccopic black thing behind the 1st lens) "unscrewed" after only single year of not-intensive usage, and zoom has been locked at ~73 mm. Needed 1 month to reassembly completely the lens.

Strength:

Image quality, size, low weight compared to Canon's 2.8 version of the same lens.

Weakness:

Lack of tripod collar, especially when used with digital cameras with 1.6 multiplication factor. If you use the tripod collar with an Elan 7E, D60 or 10D with an attached battery pack, it won't fit on some quick release tripod mounts unless you mount it backwards.

I used this lens to photograph triathlons and soccer. I have never used a zoom lens that produces sharper images. I have replaced this lens with a Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS USM and the image quality is pretty much the same. If are looking for a zoom in this telephoto range, and don't need a 2.8 aperture, then look no further. This lens is significantly lighter than its 2.8 big brother. Focusing is so fast and silent that if your camera doesn't confirm the focus with a beep, it will sometimes seem that the lens didn't do anything while the image on your view finder came into focus. On a 10D, Digital Rebel, D30 or D60, this lens operates as a 110-320 telephoto, plenty enough for most sports.

Customer Service

Never used for this lens, but had good experience getting repairs to a G2 and 550EX that I dropped.

This lens is awesome. I used to have f2.8 200mm SSC in the old FD system and notice no difference in sharpness. The light weight and fast autofocus are awesome.

- Sharp - Lightweight - Wonderful background blur

I bought the used 70-200 mm f/4L with a very mint condition (like new). The best zoom lens I've tested so far. Image quality are sharp, vivid colour reproduction & the most important thing is lightweight. Very steady to use with my EOS 3.

An outstanding lense relatively with f/4 apperture. Nice auto-focus. Real contrast makes difference even for white over white. The collar would be nice to have in the package but never the less I got the lense.

Customer Service

Very nice. I was pleased to find out that international orders are so close thanks to the net. Thank you people at Adorama.

Strength:

Sharp at basically all appertures. Images you get are the highest possible quality and you know it - that's why you bought this lens! Focusing is quick, despite f/4. Makes the consumer zooms look dull and soft.

Weakness:

If this is your first "L" lens, you will be buying more of them! Made me purchase a bigger camera bag(like I did not want it anyway). Was mostly out of stock at B&H(and still is as I am writing the review).

I purchased this as my first "L" lens. I have seen the results you get with the L glass, but could not imagine that the L lens could be affordable and at the same time still retain the qualities of the Canon L series lenses. Anyway, I just developed a roll of Fuji Provia 100F. I had spun the slide projector back and forth for about an hour looking at the slides, which were shot ptimarily using this lens. I have shots of people outdoors and indoors using 420EX flash on my Elan 7E. The results are amazing. The slides tell it all. You see what you shoot and not what you get from print lab and this tells you right away how good this lens is. Simply put - amazing! I can go on about colors and sharpness all day long here. The lens is light when compared to 2.8 version, easy to use when handholding your camera, very responsive and precise focus ring. Zoom ring is a little tight, but no big deal. Zoom is all internal so the lens does not extend when zooming. The hood is good, although takes a little practice to mount it fast. Focusing with this lens using AF is not a problem even in not so good lighting. Overall - excelent.
