Strength:

- Light weight. - As sharp and contrasty as the 2.8 copies. - Great price.

Weakness:

- f/4? but I never needed f/2.8 for my type of works

Generally I'm not a big fan of zoom lenses but the 70-200 does satisfy my need of versatility in some cases. Speaking of sharpness, the 70-200 is the only zoom maybe comparable to some of the primes, I've used both the 70-200 2.8 IS and non IS version, they're all OK, but I don't need the fast aperture for the type of photography I do, besides, they're all that darn heavy and I really want to get off some load from my backpack. So I picked up the f/4 copy of the 70-200 - an outstanding choice, the 2.8 copies then went on eBay and I never missed them at all. After all, I used the money saved getting a 35/1.4L and another 100/2.8 micro.

Best lens you can get. No sense bothering with off brands or consumer lenses. Buy this lens and be done with it.

Customer Service

The jury is still out on this one. It was very helpful to me that people would take the time to write reviews. And from what I read B&H was the ONLY place to buy. Well...not so fast. I purchased a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 lens. The imported model. When It arrived there was no lens Hood!! It clearly states on the B&H website that a lens hood is included. I called customer service to let them know. The first person I spoke to said I would have to call Canon for one. I figured what the heck...if I can get it quicker from Canon I will go ahead and pay for one. After calling 1-800-ok-canon and talking to them, I learned that they would have to back order one. So..I went back to the B&H website and low n behold...they sell the lens hood seperately. So I Called back to B&H customer service and explained that I felt they should just send me a lens hood from their stock as I have PAID FOR IT!!! To be continued....we shall see how this turns out.

Weakness:

Filter size (67mm means I had to buy a polarizer just for this lens; the hood won't permit a step-up ring)

This is my favorite lens. It's tough, light, optically superb, and generally a pleasure to use. I rented the f2.8 and f2.8 IS for a few days before making up my mind; choosing the f4 was a no-brainer. I shoot digital (D60), so the stop of light is not an issue for me; I just bump the ISO up to 200 or 400 when I have to. The f2.8 zooms are great, but at the end of the day my arm felt like I had been driving railroad spikes instead of holding a camera. :) Before I bought the f4 I was concerned that it would not be sharp enough wide open, but after a year of using it I can say it is. I also couldn't see any optical difference between the f4 and the much bulkier and more expensive f2.8 zooms. This lens is so light that I have never wished for a tripod collar, even when using extension tubes, so I don't consider the lack of one a drawback. The only thing that could possibly improve this lens is IS, but that could put its big brothers out of business. :)

Customer Service

Haven't had to use it.

No tripod collar included (extra costs 89,-- Euro). Sometimes it's a problem to shoot images with the run include (heavy flares).

Very well build quality. Superb optics. It is a fun, to use the lens. I buyed this lens as the first for my EOS 33 / Elan 7 and im very pleased with the results.

This is by far the sharpest and most color-accurate zoom lens I have ever owned. If I could give it a 7 out of 5 for 'value', I would. Considering that this lens is half the price of the EF 70-200/2.8 model, I don't really miss the extra stop of speed. It's also nice and light, you can carry this all day even on a heavy body like the EOS 1N.
