Strength:

- Optically great: brightness, contrast and sharpness good and very equal over the whole negative. - f/4 over all zoom-length. - Good bokeh. - Almost no distortion. - Solid built lens. - Great quality macro 1:4 at 210mm. - Incredible low priced.

Weakness:

- dark corners at 210/4 - Good AF-speed with Dynax 7, but it does not always find the good distance; it's the only lens of Minolta that I have, where the use of AF of the Dynax7 is not 100% reliable - hard to find on the market

A big, heavy and zoom, optically not super-super-sharp, but with a very equal sharpness and brightness from edge to edge. It's very well suited for portraiture.

Despite the quality of this lens, the Minolta 80-200/2.8 is one of the best long zoomlenses, so if you can afford it, the 2.8 is the better choice! Otherwise: try to find this one.

Strength:

Solid construction, 1st class optics, macro capability and AF in macro mode (unlike the other Minolta zooms of the same year). Internal zoom mechanism (doesn´t change the overall length). Fixed f-stop. Excellent value for money if you can´t afford an 80-200 f2.8. Very rugged and can take the knocks. Well-sealed.

Weakness:

Some say it´s heavy but that comes with the territory. Non-internal focusing but then the lens is NOT a new lens - compare it to any 1980´s AF lens. The front element is very close to the front of the lens - a filter is obligatory.

A legendary, solid and sharp lens that has pleased many Minoltians besides myself. It is very sharp throughout the zoom range and the price that you can buy one for is ridiculously cheap. Many pro.s use it for portraits and weddings where it excels. I tend to use it all the time. Besides my 28-85 f3.5-4.5 the 70-210 is a lens I can´t live without. The AF speed is not as fast as modern lenses but I have never had a problem with it and for a mid-80s lens it is great. It eats a Nikon 70-210 f4 for breakfast. Bottom line - for the money this is one excellent lens that will never disappoint you.

Use it with the lens shade. The best lens for the money. Buy this one over the new models, or get the 2.8 G
