Strength:
Zoom range, reasonable price
Weakness:
Dull colors and lack of sharpness when compared to my 28~70mm AF Nikkor and 70~210mm f4~5.6 I agree with the last reviewer. This is the worst Nikon zoom lens I''ve ever used. I borrowed it from my brother-in-law for a little over a month, and I am really disappointed in its lack of sharpness. I tried it with and without tripod, using Fuji Superia X-tra 400 and Fuji Reala, and the results are pretty bad when compared to my Nikon 28~70mm f3.5~4.5 and the 70-210mm f4~f5.6 that I''ve been using for ten years. I am glad I resisted the urge to buy this lens outright when it just came out. Customer Service Never used Similar Products Used: 28~70mm f3.5~4.5 AF Nikkor 24~85mm AF Minolta (much sharper!) |

Strength:
The range would be excellent.... if only it was sharp.. but since it is not, this is meaningless.
Weakness:
Sharpness at all apertures and focal lengths, and lacking the rich/contrasty color of the Nikkor 28-105. I am a big Nikon fan, so this is hard to admit, but hopefully will save someone the time and trouble. After reading so many mixed reviews of this product, I finally decided to try the Nikkor 24-120 myslef, because of my desire for greater reach on both ends than my Nikkor 28-105. I am now on my second lens in an attempt to find a good one (comparable to the images provided by the 28-105) and will be switching it for a Tamron 24-135 next weekend. The images (on the two I have had) as poor as noted in the "less than" complementary reviews I have read - very soft and color not as rich/contrasty compared to the 28-105. Absolutely no where near the quality of the Nikkor 28-105. At the store where I purchased it, I finally got a hold of a salesperson who shoots Nikon, has the 28-105, has tried the 24-120 and fully agrees with my assessment. He highly recommended the Tamron as being "at least" as good as the Nikkor 28-105 at all ranges and apertures and possibly better. I will pick up the Tamron next weekend (currently out of stock in Nikon mount). The store has been excellent to work with in switching lenses.... and more than willing to provide exceptional service with the sale. I remain amazed that Nikon continues to market this lens... as the salesman said, and I agree, "regardless of what Nikon says, this cannot be ''''Nikon'''' glass". I would have to agree. Save yourself frustration and dollars in wasted film testing to see if it is OK... it''''s not. Two straight lenses proved to me it is not an isolated case, not being compared to ED, L, G glass or primes; instead, to a less expensive Nikkor (28-105). I also compared it to the Maxxum 24-105 as I had tested it about a month earlier (same shots, sequencing, etc.) the Maxxum (while not up to the Nikon 28-105 standard) was MUCH better than the Nikkor 24-120. Strength:
As close to one lens that does it all that you can reasonably buy for the money. Sharpness and contrast (at least in this 2nd lens)
Weakness:
72mm lens filters are expensive heft of lens is substantial: > 1 pound This is the SECOND Nikon 24-120mm zoom lens that I have bought, both form eBay. My first 24-120 was disappointing in the lack of sharpness at all focal lengths. I sold that lens. I bought another one on eBay at a price I could not pass up, thinking to resell it later. But after shooting a roll with it, I am keeping it because it is sharp, sharper than my Nikkor 28-105mm zoom and just about as sharp as the Nikkor 28-70mm AF-D zoom. Coupled with its versatile focal length, I must keep this on my SLR. Strength:
Despite what you may have heard, this lens is sharp (the late John Netherton used it with excellent results). Excellent focal length range. Fast focus (short-through focus ring largely helps). Relatively compact for its range..
Weakness:
Minor quibble is that the lens rotates as you zoom, prohibiting the use of flower-shaped hood for better shading. Nikkor 24-85 f/28 - 4 has a flower-shaped hood as will the new 24 - 85 G lens with silent wave motor. After I ''learned'' how to use this lens and rethink my expectatios, I started to really have fun with it. For what this lens is (not a 2.8), it fully meets its intentions as a great general purpose zoom. As one reviewer said, ''...it says f/5.6 right on the box.'' I recently used it on a weekend getaway and it was on my F100 for about 80% of the shots I took. I switched to a Nikkor 75-300mm AF when I needed longer focal lengths. The focal length range of the 24-120 is terrific - I used it all that weekend. It also focuses realtively close which is nice. Lately I''ve been using 400 speed print film (rated at 320) to compensate for the slower speed. Shooting in aperature priority on the F100 I was able to adjust aperature in 1/3 steps to get the minimum shutter speed I needed. Even with a polarizer the lens'' speed wasn''t an issue for me with faster film on a sometimes overcast day. Customer Service Never needed as with any of the Nikon products I have ever owned. Similar Products Used: Nikkors: 24-50 AF, 20-25 f/2.8, Manual focus 35-105, 35-70 f/2.8 AF. |

Strength:
-Great price for the wide-angle range. -Solid, tank-like construction, this lens won''''t break! -SHARP, SHARP results when used with a sturdy tripod and appropriate speed film. -Average speed AF doesn''''t slow at all in cold conditions.
Weakness:
Weaknesses: -72mm ring makes buying filters expensive. -can be a little bulky in a camera bag Once again, as I write a review on this site I must emphasize the importance of using a tripod if you want SHARP photos. And when combined with my Bogen, it gave excellent, very sharp reults. From f/3.5 up to f/22, the optical results (ie. sharpness, color, distortion) have always been fantastic. Sharpest results were at 28-100mm, others outside that range were just a tiny bit less sharp, but nothing that has prevented me from selling photos shot with this lens. Even at a range outside (ie. 24mm), my photos looked crisp and were completely sellable. It is a great lens, and given the average AF speed, you get alot for your money. It is my #1 money maker as far as lenses go! Customer Service None-it just won''t break! Similar Products Used: Nikon 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 D lens Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E lens |

- At F8 I have trouble telling this lens from my AF-D 50 1.4 - No corner distortion or light fall off at any range

- Slow lens, but it says 3.5-5.6 right on the box so I can''t complain. I am very happy with this lens. The zoom range is great and pictures come out very sharp. Strength:
Compact, light weight/well balanced. Superb optics, quick focussing. Very useful range. Well priced
Weakness:
Sluggish zoom mechanism, Zoomlock would help. Cheap lensshade with fragile bayonet (I''ve gone through 3 of them in a year) An amazing compact zoom with very few drawbacks. I use it for 80% of my wedding shots. The other ones are Nikkor 80-200/2.8 and a 16/2.8 Nikkor fisheye. This lens has suberb optics which render tack sharp and extremely well saturated images at every focal range. At 24mm, the saturation of the photos is outstanding, even on somewhat hazy days this lens seems to pull natural colors out of the scene that i wasn''t aware of when shooting. The 24-85 raneg make it perfect for the of photo journalistic weddings I shoot. It is a fairly light light lens which balances very well. The lack of speed never bother me, it is balanced well enough (w/F100) to hold steady at available light down to 1/2 second. Focussing is very quick and fairly quiet. One of the best investments I ever made in camera gear. The only drawbacks are a very fragile bayonet on lens shade and a sluggish focussing gear which tends to loosen after frequent use but slight drawbacks which are way overshadowed by the performance and usefulness of this lens. For travel this is the only lens I take with me. The range makes it a perfect match for using it with an SB 26-27-28 speedlight. Get one, it might be the only lens you''ll end up using! Customer Service Never needed it in the 3 years I''ve owned it. Similar Products Used: Tokina 28-70 Contax 28-85 Tokina 28-200 |

Heavy. A bit large A rather large, heavy, well built lens. Great zoom range. Clear, acceptably sharp images. I replaced my 28-105 lens with the 24-120 as it gives better results.
