Strength:

small, lightweight
very sharp
fast focus

Weakness:

not metal
no crinkle finish
distance ring is not accurate

Very sharp if stopped down a little. Not a problem- definitely not a "turd". Very, very few lenses are good wide open. Range may seem short, but not for 'enviornmental' photos. It provides excellent options to the "normal" perspective, while having the normal (50) perspective still an option, making its extremely useful for travel and nature. A very quick street lense, too, that is small and light enough to tote around- Don't try this with a 24-120 behemoth. It is somewhat plastic clad, but has withstood some serious handling while mountain biking and hiking in rugged terrain. Decent contrast with very good sharpness in a wide/normal zoom- definitely much better than the average zoom. Sure, I would like a constant 2.8 or a teeny bit more on the end, but then I don't want those accompanying compromises.

Weakness:

extends obscenely, no good in low light without tripod, exceedingly poor image quality at less than f8

A major turd. Mine is the worst lens of 10 that I own. Requires f8 to get a decent picture. Forget wide open entirely, which means it better be bright and sunny.

Strength:

The focal length range is a nice complement to a longer zoom such as a 70-210. It autofocuses fairly quickly, even on an older camera body like a N8008. When well stopped down and on a tripod, I believe the sharpness rivals prime optics. With big enlargements of group portraits shot on Kodak Royal Gold 25 or 100, I could see what time it was on people's watches and read the labels on their clothes. Some viewers even thought I used medium format, but I wouldn't go that far.

Weakness:

The filter spins with the focusing but I've learned to focus, then adjust the polarizer or whatever. There's a second problem that I've learned to avoid but haven't quite learned to live with. Once, while making a group portrait, I was forced to use this lens only about one stop down from wide open because the light was dim and I was already down to about 1/15 with the camera on a tripod. I didn't dare go any slower than that for fear of subject movement. The 4x6's looked great but the 8x12's showed the center noticeably sharper than the edges. I was appalled because even the noncritical, nonphotographic types pointed this flaw out to me since I was reluctant to mention it myself. Since I was somewhere between 35 and 50 on the zoom, my solution has been to use a prime 35 or 50 lens in the times since I have found myself in this situation. Maybe I have a bad sample of this lens where another sample of this lens may not have this flaw but I haven't been able to verify this as yet.I didn't use a strobe because I wanted the background include and the light even on the three rows of people.

This is a great lens when stopped down to at least f8 if enlargements are expected to be made. This is usually not a problem outdoors or with powerful strobes.

Weakness:

a bit more prone to flare than primes

This lens is sharp and the results are great with high contrast, high resolution. I have used the 24-120 and anything longer than 70 really has low contrast and soft corners and is bulky. The 24-50 may seem like a short range, but I keep it on the body at all times and then have a longer lense (85 or 80-200) for the longer end and I'm covered. Except for the necessity of high speed (I grab something like a 50 1.8), this lens fulfills all my needs and then some. Having a normal perspective 50 with a somewhat wide 24 is indispensible for people pics and travel (i find that having the 24 wide is good, but often use it at around 28ish- but only after seeing it a bit wider can you then decide)- and this zoom gets it all with high picture quality.

Strength:

The lens is sharp. It has a nice useful range and I keep it on one of my camera bodies at all times. Highly recommended.

Weakness:

No problems.

This lens is great. It does not have the crinkle finish and looks like it is made of plastic. Do not let it's looks fool you. It has quality optics and does all you ask of it. Wish that the front lens did not rotate during focusing since this makes using a polarizer harder, but I can live with that.

Strength:

A great zoom range, combined with excellent optics and a solid build quality. Weight and size are just right for a all round (wide angle) zoom.

Weakness:

At 24mm, it has a tendency for vignetting; it can, at that setting, really handle only one filter at a time.
Furthermore, it has a rotating front lens, but IMHO, that's only a minor issue.

This is a very nice lens, very versatile and of a very high quality.

for a moderate wide angle, i guess 24 is now considered moderate:-), to normal zoom for the nikon in the affordable price range this is the one. don't let the "plastic" feel/ construction of the barrel fool you- it is tough, i've used it for about 3 years now, in and out of a domke bag several times a day. on N90 with sb25 and dedicated synch cord its all the indoor flash/ flash fill combo i need for small groups.

a great normal lense with slightly wide 24. Great, fun lense- with Matrix metering, you can't miss. Very sharp at nearly all aperatures and flexible perspective make it an on the camera lense at all times. If you think your P&S is great, SLR normal/wide lenses are a fair notch better. This lense is better than the 24-120 in the same range and at a fraction of it's weight/price. Some might think it's 2X range is limited...
