Strength:

Outstanding image quality, although plastic lens build quality is very good and lens has a solid feel. No China here, lens is made in japan. fast focusing

Weakness:

Plastic, but all consumer lenses now are, so its no issue. You want a pro lens then prepare yourself to spend over a $1200 on AF-S 28-70mm. 28-105 is abetter buy than 24-85, or 24-120 I think, just read a reviews on the net.

I am very satisfied with this lens, its very sharp, colors have very nice contrast This is the Nikon consumer lens with smallest amount of distortions that ever made to date. I cant notice any even at 28mm wide open Now it cant be purchased for well under 300 , so its a great buy. For the best picture , process your film with kodak premium processing on duralife paper Images are absolutely perfect. Great lens !!!

Strength:

-Very sharp and good contrasts at all ranges -Sturdy -Low price for the quality

Weakness:

-Not so recommended for manual Nikon cameras (I use it on FM3a) because the focusing ring has a small focus range so even the slightest move can make your motive out of focus. Also DOF isn''t so great, even on 28mm - this is just a minor remark, not a weakness though.

I''m really pleased with this lens. It''s exceptionally sharp at all ranges and it has a useful macro function which works very good when used correctly (steady tripod for good DOF). This lens is even sharper than some of my old fixed focal lenses!

Strength:

Useful zoom range Handy macro (don’t blame the lens for personal ignorance; learn to use your equipment before you criticize the "fiddly switch" – it is quite simple as previous postings suggest) Above average build quality Comfortable heft

Weakness:

Not so much a lens flaw but be aware that at longer exposures and focal lengths, an unsteady hand is going to give rise to image softness. I would personally prefer more damping on the focus (in manual) and zoom rings. No significant weaknesses in its category.

A good lens with a useful range for my style of photography and bought for general use on my F80 body. I have found little of the softness other reviewers have experienced that I would put down to the lens. I also seldom use aperture extremes & suspect lack of sharpness (in my case at least) is largely due to an unsteady hand. I have experienced little vignetting and then only when using both a ND and PC filter together. I have no problem with the build quality and find polycarbonate materials perfectly acceptable and frequently less prone to denting and scratching than their metal counterparts. I have also turned out some remarkable macro photos (using a tripod). Overall a versatile lens and fine results within the reasonable limitations of a wide range zoom, certainly at the price. A hood is useful.

Strength:

low distortion extra 1/2 stop of speed good macro

Weakness:

misses focus sometime; come on Nikon!!! Colors neutral-I like them jazzed up sometimes.

I purchased the lens for a trip to New Orleans because my Tamron 28-105 f4-5.6 had dust inside. The construction of the Nikon is definitely miles ahead of the Tamron (purchased 4 years ago @ $169.00) but I believe the Tamron has more saturated color. The Nikon is a lot better for "macro" shots, has lower distortion and the extra half of a stop in speed was useful. It is a very good lens but I just love the old beat-up 180mm f2.8 nikkor I got off of eBay! If only the 28-105''s resolution would approach its! All in all a good lens in its own right.

Strength:

Sharpness. Light weight. Good focal lengths.

Weakness:

None up to this point.

This is a great lens! My wife and I photograph youth sports (i.e. little league and soccer)at apertures ranging from f5.6-16 and I can tell you this lens delivers sharp, professional images. One of the products we offer as youth sports photographers is a 20X30 door poster and when we showed posters taken with this lens to a little league official he said "there''s no grain." In reality there was some grain but not very noticeable (film used was Fuji Superia 200). You''ll more than get your money''s worth.

None needed.

Strength:

-Great price for the wide-angle range. -Solid, tank-like construction, this lens won''''''''''''''''t break! -SHARP, SHARP results when used with a sturdy tripod and appropriate speed film. -Average speed AF doesn''''''''''''''''t slow at all in cold conditions.

Weakness:

-72mm ring makes buying filters expensive. -can be a little bulky in a camera bag

Once again, as I write a review on this site I must emphasize the importance of using a tripod if you want SHARP photos. And when combined with my Bogen, it gave excellent, very sharp reults. From f/3.5 up to f/22, the optical results (ie. sharpness, color, distortion) have always been fantastic. Sharpest results were at 28-100mm, others outside that range were just a tiny bit less sharp, but nothing that has prevented me from selling photos shot with this lens. Even at a range outside (ie. 24mm), my photos looked crisp and were completely sellable. It is a great lens, and given the average AF speed, you get alot for your money. It is my #1 money maker as far as lenses go!

Customer Service

Strength:

From 28 to 105 there are all focals that you need usually. Light weight and some metal building parts. Zoom and focus ring sliding well.

Weakness:

A zoom is always a compromise.....

I have changed my old Pentax equipment in december 2000 (LX and MX bodies & winders, 24, 28, 35, 50, 70-210 lenses)with a N80 and 28-105 lens. First impression is a very interesting light weight of my photo bag!!! This zoom produce very sharp images, distortion is imperceptible; the portraits of my sons at the 30x40 cm format are very agreeable. The slides are very rich of contrast and nice light.

Strength:

Light. Well built. Image quality ok

Weakness:

Macro is average

A good all round lens, let down by an average image quality and average Macro. However, as an all-rounder it has its place. It is light, but well built and does produce relatively decent images for a zoom lens.
