Light Weight/Sharpness

Weakness:

Relatively Slow

Unlike the last reviewer, I found this lens to be outstanding in almost every way. Sharpness is there, rapid focus and very light weight. This is a fine peice of equipment.

Strength:

Cheap lens that has the ED name and gold flash.

Weakness:

Poor sharpness and poor (cheap) construction. This is the lens that will destroy the ED Nikkor reputation. Deserves a 0 (zero) star rating.

PU what a DOG. Expected some degree of sharpness from an ED Nikkor. Enlargements over 4 x 6 were soft, 5 x 7 were acceptable, 8 x 10 prints were not acceptable. Took it back after 2 rolls of film. Shoot it with 800 or higher speed films, the grain may hide the lack of sharpness.

Customer Service

Got my money back with no argument from the seller.

Strength:

Fast focusing over the 80-200 and 80-400.

Weakness:

A lot of plastic. I tend to abuse my gear.

I purchased this lens for my wife while I used the 80-200/2.8. In short time I found myself in love wiht the lens, using it myself! The extra 100mm reach really comes in handy, and when added to the D100 it becomes 450mm, really making it a grand deal financially. The results are amazing on the D100 and I do not regret the purchase at all. While I consider getting the 80-400 and 70-200 lenses, I have to admit this lens is small, light, and focuses very fast.

Slow(5.6)aperture,not as sharp at 300.Must stop down.

Compared SQF results at 200mm of 28-200 nikkor to 70-300 ED.The 70-300 was much sharper and had better contrast.Excellent range as Pete Turner has said.Good lens for the price.

Strength:

Lightweight, nice range

Weakness:

f4 - 5.6 Adequate quickness outdoors. I haven't used it much indoors.

A very lightweight and nice lens. I took this to the backyard for the first roll and put the kids on the tree and shot a roll or two. WOW. Beautiful colors and great sharpness. All the people I work with now want me to shot their children's photos. The professional developing store was also very impressed.

Strength:

Sharp. A good price for that range. 62 mm filters.Light weight.ED glass .

Weakness:

Plastic feel. Focus hunt at around 300. No macro ? but anyway when I do macro I prefer using a smaller zoom or lens.

I had before a few 70-210 zooms and I had always the feeling than I was missing sometings....too short. Finally with this one I'm satisfied , 300 than what it's take for catching the actions, like some pictures I took of my girl in her soccer league. Everytime I look at my pictures than I took with this zoom, I'm surprised of the clarity. At f8 and plus it's very sharp and for the price it's definitively a deal. Wanting better quality will mean bying the very expensive 80-200 f2.8 zoom and even there I would'nt have the 300 mm.But it's true than around 300 you must hold it very stable or use a tripod.Somes peoples complaint about the plastic feel and his light weight, and it's true but in my case it's help me to hold it stable, I tried the 80-200 2.8 and it's a brick .

Strength:

Solid build, ED glass, good handling. Sharp and contrasty photos.

Weakness:

Front element rotates, bayonet hood mount prevents easy access to polarizer filters and lens cap.

This is an great consumer telephoto lens. While the ED element is actually a single piece buried deep within the assembly, it doesn''t prevent this lens from taking sharp and contrasty photographs at 300mm with the characteristic "warm" Nikon color. Sharp from 70-200 with still acceptable results at maximum extension. You''ll enjoy using this lens under bright conditions and with fast film to allow handholding. Lower-light conditions require some sort of support (tripod or monopod). Good build and excellent handling - the twist zoom is almost second nature - you''ll find yourself almost lined up naturally with the intermediate focal length markings after a few tries. A metal mount and the aperture ring are solid selling points over the G version of this lens.

Strength:

Light weight but not light in quality where it counts. and also light in price.

Weakness:

grant it, it is an awsome lens but will more than likly use it outside only because it is a slower lens. It takes a second or two to find and lock the subject. but outside I have time and It''s not going to bother me.

I purchased the lens wanting a telephoto to through the background out of focus in nature portraits, and guess what IT DID IT. I used NPC Fuji and the colors and the subject are SLAMMING. I had purchased the 70-210 non D and it was ok but I took it back to have a newer lens with D and longer length. I agree you must have it on a tripod for superior results. Go get this lens.......
