    Strength:

    As above

    Weakness:

    None

I have used all versions of the 80-200 2.8 and the combination of AFS with VR puts this lens in a league of its own. It feels good on the camera, unlike the "sewer pipe" 80-200 AFS and opens up a new world in handheld photography. Buy a Canon 500D closeup lens for it and venture into macro photography, or add a TD14E teleconverter and get yourself a 280 F4 (both combinations give outstanding results). On the D1/X/H and D100 being able to handhold a 300 F2.8 lens is a dream come true.

    Strength:

AF is quick and silent, VR works (AND is silent too!), sharp!

    Weakness:

I would have loved to stick with the apperture ring - but alas, the thing is worth changing this old habit. Obviously they decided against the addiional 5 mm in lenght which this would have meant. As most buyers should be rather openminded towards buying the newer bodies, it is not a big minus.

This is easily the best zoom lens ever made. It ranks among the best lenses theres are. The AF is incredibly swift and silent, the glass is sharp, boukeh is beautiful, details are much improved over previous models (hood-lock, removable adapter for tripod, etc.. all mentioned before..). VR works! This was the biggest surprise. The lens would be worth buing anyway, but VR makes it an outstanding product. Even with the TC 2.0 it works like a charm. If you can afford it - buy. I you can not afford it - don´t eat, safe you money for this lens.

    Strength:

Crisp, contrasty images with great bokeh; focus limiting switch speeds autofocus; handles well on or off a monopod.

    Weakness:

If you buy this lens you may need to purchase a larger camera bag. Though supplied with a carrying case the strap is thin and slides off easily.

I purchased this lens to replace my 70-300 Nikon AF zoom and the results have been superb. The autofocus is very quick on the F100 and the vibration reduction has made a significant difference in panning shots of auto races; a challenge for any AF system. I can also confirm the other reviewer's comments about the bokeh. For the serious amateur sports photographer this is a superb lens and well worth the price.

    Strength:

VR, lighter than the previous model, and easy to handle

    Weakness:

    Dust, expensive

I just bought this lens in exchange for my AFS 80-200 F2.8. I have tried this lens and the quality of picture is relatively the same as my old one. But the thing that make dissapointed about this new lens is dust. I went back to the shop and checked another 10 lens. All of them have dust. Also I went to Nikon dealer and checked another 5 lens. The same, all of them have dust. My opinion is if you already have the old AFS 80-200, you don't need to rush to buy this lens unless you really need VR.

    Strength:

Excellent AF-S, bokeh, VR really delivers, lighter and thiner than AF-S 80-200

    Weakness:

    Flares in "contre jour" shooting

I have replaced one of my AF-S 80-200 lenses for this one. Now this lens really rocks. VR has turned out to be a life saver with speed as slow as 1/15 and even less. Bokeh is amazing and handling is superior to the AF-S 80-200. Bravo Nikon.

    Strength:

Good AFS, nice shape to handle, very nice bokeh, VR really works, excellent optics.

    Weakness:

As far as I can say now: None

I think this is one of the best zoom lenses ever made by Nikon. It's focusing real fast on my D1X. I think it's also good balanced on a D1x or F5.This lense has a beautiful bokeh. Also like the VR which is just working great, tried it over and over again and it really works !! Also works great with Teleconverters TC14IIE and TC20IIE. Last combination is going to get a little softer result, but in most situations still usefull.

    Strength:

    As mentioned above.´

    Weakness:

Focus lock button located in front of the focusing ring, but 90% of us use AF, don't need focus lock in MF anyway, those buttons should be in front of the zoom ring like the 80-200 AF-S. To some, a G lens (no aperture ring) design might be a problem, but then, why would one want to use this "high tech" lens on older camera?F

A fine lens, much better than expected. The focusing is faster and less jumpy than the 80-200 AF-S, smaller and lighter as well. Nice details in design, locking lens hood, quick release tripod bracket with two tripod sockets on the bracket, and one addition on the collar, so you can put the lens on a tripod with or without the tripod bracket. The VR really works, better than the 80-400. Definitely worth the price if you use Nikon.µ
