Strength:

Very sharp at F5.6 to 11 Fast and quiet autofocus Exceptionally well built.

Weakness:

Would be nice to have a wider zoom range. Maybe in a couple of years? Not a weakness though.

This is one fantastic piece of glass. It's a little on the big and heavy side…. but I believe that is absolutely necessary in order to achieve the F/2.8 constant aperture and superb image quality. This lens is capable of producing very sharp images at F/5.6 to F/11. Even wide open, the image is acceptable for most occasions….but nobody shoots wide open unless you have to. I shot a church once at approximately 75 meters away on an overcast day at around noon…no tripod. There was a small sign by the doorway with letters approximately 2.5 inches in height on it. My camera showed a shutter speed of 1/250 at F/5.6. I didn't even notice that this sign was there, but when I looked at my slides (Provia 400F) under a 10X loupe, I can read every single word on that sign very clearly. I never had a lens that could do that before. Believe me, that sign is just a speck on the slide and this lens made it razor sharp. Autofocus is very quiet. It's fast and accurate, but it will not blow you away with amazement. I find the autofocus on the AF-S 80-200 to be a bit faster. But it's definitely fast enough for me and that's what's important. Downsides? None that I can see…..except for the fact that this lens (with the awesome hood) makes me look like a paparazzi.

Between the AF-S 28-70 2.8 and the AF-S 80-200 2.8 with a 1.4 TC on a D1 series camera; a wide parameter of perspectives is covered. Both lens's are benchmark sharp, both are benchmark quality throughout. My experience with attaching the Nikor 1.4 TC to the 80-200 AF-S is remarkable quality. All of my photos are published in a newspaper, and with regard to this venue; both lenses are more than adequate. I currently use a 18-35 3.5-4.5 Nikor and a15-30 3.5-4.5 Sigma ,I subsequently purchased the Sigma to get the extra 3mm and would have purchased the 15-30 in lieu of the 18-35 if it had been available. Both lenses are very sharp; build quality is marginal, but adequate.... I also use a Sigma 14 2.8, but not near as much since I purchased the 15-30 Sigma. I would like to see Nikon manufacture a 15-30 2.8 and I would expect as technology moves forward; a real exotic like a 8-20 2.8-3.5 (-: might available.... All of the AF-S lenses are awesome... Anyone who slams them with respect to Tokina, Tamron or Sigma is only blowing smoke... The mainstream professional Nikors have always been great; and the after market lenses are very good. It all boils down to budget... I have borrowed heavily to purchase professional equipment, but do not regret my investment... My images are published consistently is a metropolitan newspaper and I'm a happy camper..... It takes money to make money; it is a struggle, but necessary and well worth the investment in my humble opinion..... In closing I would say my main motivation in purchasing the 28-70 was image quality.... Nikon and Canon are the benchmarks in professional imaging; if you can stretch your finances and can make money with your investment, go for it....

Strength:

Fast, quiet, sharp 28-70 coverage, it is extremely versatile.

Weakness:

A bit heavy, but it is a powerhouse of a lense.

This lense like it's sister AFS lenses, is simply remarkable. I use this one, primarily for following around my two young kids. The images I have been able to capture both indoor and out are superb. This lense has alot to offer anyone at any level.

Strength:

Instant, precise autofocus. Impeccable picture quality. Nine aperature blades.

Weakness:

Draws unwanted attention.

Regardless of skill level if you are looking for better pictures, this lense will help you get there. Find some way, any way to afford it. But be careful about borrowng or renting it. Once you try it, only the AFS 28-70 will do. Yes its: pricey - Life is too short, and I want to get the most out of it before its too late. It's only money! heavy - When I want light I use the N65. To me the quality feel of this lense and F100 require it to feel substantial which includes having some weight to it. This lense has a noticable advantage in sharpness over the othe Nikkor consumer lenses. I can't really tell with 4x6 prints but I can definitely tell using a film scanner. But the sharpness isn't the only difference. Call it the ED, contrast or whatever but this lense adds an intangeable quality to properly composed slides that I believe some refer to as "pop" to make it just a little more pleasing to the eye. BTW I started out with the 24, 35, 50 primes. I figured I could do some cropping with my feet and a 4000dpi scanner. Alas it just didn't work. You can't always use your feet, the scanner cropping worked somewhat but image quality suffered and switching lenses is a pain. In the end I think a zoom is more my cup of tea.

Strength:

Ring focussing, better than older push/pull AF 35-70mm 2.8D, as well as quicker autofocus, better image rendition and the advantage of 28mm.

Weakness:

Very awdward to hand hold on F-80 due to size and weight.

Big, heavy, bulky and expensive. If you can live with all these characteristics, then you've got yourself a mighty fine lens. Have enlarged to 20x30inch on Portra 160 @ f/5.6, and was blown away. Comes pretty close to prints of 20x24inch from RB67, obviously lacking the high colour fidelity of the larger format film. Did not expect 35mm to be this good. Very handy range of focal lengths. This is the lens I use most often for formal posed group shots.

Strength:

Build quality, quick AF and sharpness.

Weakness:

Heavy.

This lens is very good. It is sharp and the AF is quick. The only drawback is the size, it weights almost 1 kg. The hood is also very good.

Customer Service

The AF stopped working after a year. Nikon in Sweden fixed it. I have not had any problem since than.

Strength:

Solid built. Sharp.

Weakness:

AF-S focusing speed is not as fast as the AF-S 80-200, 300 and longer focal length. Try shooting basketball under the basket with F100, D1H, D1X, it just can''t keep up with the action, I guess it was not design to do that. Canon 28-70 is the same way. Maybe a focus limiter in future model would help.

I am sure everybody reading this should know that it is a sharp lens. One would not except anything less from one of the Nikkor f2.8 ED AF-S lenses. I have read in several reviews showing concern in the lens not being an internal zoom design [the lens extends when zoomed]. The lens is designed to be used with the lens hood, it makes perfect sense when you look at it, the lens is extended to its fullest at 28mm, and less at 70mm, thus creating the ideal shading from the hood. Canon 28-70mm f2.8L is of the same design.

Strength:

- SHARP!!!! - Color reproduction - Very fast focus, very silent - 77mm filter size

Weakness:

ehhhhh....... It''s heavy but what do you expect for this kind of quality?

Who spends 2000 euro''s on a 28-70 lens? Well... everybody should if you can affort it!!! I just got this lens and shot my first rolls and when I got the results I was simply amazed. The sharpness and the colors are beautifull. It balances perfectly with my F5 and it feels like it can stand a nucleair blast. It focusses also extremely fast even in low light situations.

Weakness:

-where''s the non AF-S version? -hood + lens = telescope

Okay, Okay...I''m a 21 yr old college student who just dropped $1400 on a camera lens? Am I stupid? If you haven''t used this lens before, then you would say yes; but if you have, then you know that it was a wise purchase. Compared to my old Nikon 28-105, the comparison is absurd. This sharpness and contrast that this lens delivers sets the standard for camera manufacturers to follow...and, being a Photography major, I''ve had a chance to get my hands on just about every piece of photography equipment that exists--this is my favorite. On my F100+grip it couldn''t feel better. I also don''t really understand what the fuss is about it''s size...if you''re really more concerned about a few more grams when compared to steller optics, then you don''t need a $1400 lens in the first place. The AF-S is blindingly fast and silent. This is an incredible lens and worth every penny!!

Strength:

Sharpness, contrast, no colour fringing (always noticeable on digital), really sturdy build, nice big focusing ring. In spite of the size, feels perfect. Nice big AF/M switch and the ability to focus manually even with the switch set to AF. Focus speed is amazingly fast and quiet, as you would expect from an AFS lens. Lens hood is very effective.

Weakness:

That d***** aperture lock switch again, very fiddly. Lens hood, while being great at it''s job is more of a nuisance and attracts too much attention. The aperture ring looks the same as the one on all the cheaper Nikon lenses and lets down the rest of the lens body, which seems to be metal. A better set of DOF markings would have been nice.

Just got this lens today, after reading many reviews and first impressions are good. I shot about 40 Nefs with ny D1x and checked them on my laptop and am amazed at the quality and sharpness. A tad more distortion around 30mm compared to the 17-35 but very minor. No fringing even at the long end. Sharp images even shot wide open, right out to the edge (or as near to the edge that a D1x allows with the 1.5x factor). Had the 28-105 & 28-200 Nikon glass and while I was happy with them I am glad I sold them to buy this lens. The contrast, colour & sharpness are just superb. Very little sharpening in PS required. Early days yet and I hope to give the lens a run for the money over the weekend.

Customer Service

Only have the lens one day so hopefully I will not need them yet. Used them in the past and found them reasonably fast and reliable.
