Model Reviewed: AF80-200mm f/2.8D AF-S IF-ED Zoom-Nikkor

Strength:

This is where the AFS excels. The heavy optics are moved at lightning speed and with little noise. The otpics are on par with the prime lenses, I sold my 100 f2.8 and 180 f2.8 AF-d's and have not regretted moving to a zoom of this quality. The speed (f2.8) gives a bright screen and is quite sharp wide-open.

Weakness:

Heavy!!!

A must have in the Nikkor system.

Model Reviewed: AF80-200mm f/2.8D AF-S IF-ED Zoom-Nikkor

Strength:

Love the lens: Fast, fast AF, sharp. I also like the removable tripod mount. Removing it removes a fair bit of weight.

Weakness:

None. It's a little heavy, and the hood, while it does an excellent job of reducing flair, takes up a lot of room in a camera bag. I had to buy a new bag.

While it's big, it's great. And coupled with the TC-14E, you get a superb 112-280mm f/4 lens. This eliminates the need for the 300mm f/4 lens, at a greatly reduced weight, and with no loss of quality and with fast AF. A WOW combination at air shows!

Strength:

Excellent optical quialty. Great handling with autofocus body(I have the newer model with seperate zoom and focus rings).

Weakness:

The weight does make handling tricky at times. This lens exhibits vignetting when at F5.6 or above at the longer zoom ranges.

This lens works well with the F90X when autofocusing. The colour balance and sharpness are wonderful. The vignetting has dented my confidence in it, and I only use it on F8 of F11.

Customer Service

I asked Nikon to check this lens for vignetting. I was not happy with the service here in the UK. I had to chase them constantly. They told me that it will show vignetting at F5.6 or above.

I used Nikon 70-300 AFD before this, and this is much sharper. I use Nikon prime lenses, 105/2.5, 135/2.8 and 180/2.8. All are great lenses and so much easier to handle.

Strength:

-First and foremost, it's the optics (5 ED Glass Elements really delivers
outstanding images).
-Silent Wave Motor.
-Excellent build and finish.
-Great lens hood.
-Removable tripod collar.

Weakness:

Focuses fast but not that fast compared to Canon USM.

Every pro Nikon user should have this lens. It has great multi-purpose capabilities (for landscapes, sports, portrait, etc.) The clarity and vividness of the images produced with this lens will please any 35mm shooter. I've used Provia 100F with lens and I absolutely fell in love with it more. Buy this lens if you can afford it. Like many will say on the following reviews, it's worth every penny.

Strength:

Very very sharp, well built, useful focal length, perfect for portraits, N version has fast focus (for a non AF-S lens), 2.8 max arperture

Weakness:

Big and heavy (which is to be expected) so it's not very descreet

Very sharp lens even when open wide. Well built. I have the new N version with 2 rings and tripod collar and it focus very quickly on the F100 (for a non-AF-S lens). The tripod collar isn't removable but you can swivel it out of the way when hand holding. Good balance on the F100 / MB15 (and presumably even better on the F5). All in all an excellent and razor sharp lens. Unless you shoot a lot of sports you'd probably be happy with the N version as far as focus speed goes. If you can afford it then get this lens instead of a cheaper one like the 70-240, 70-300 or pirate lens. I have the 28-105 and when I compare the lenses (at 80-105mm focal length) the 80-200 is noticably sharper. Get it.

Strength:

Excellent corner to corner tack sharpness, great color rendition, very very little distortion, ultra fast af and very silent

Weakness:

None for this type of lens. F2.8 requires a certain diameter and a lot of lens elements to minimise it's inherent distortion(zoom+F2.8)

An outstanding zoom lens with an optical performance that rivals nikkor's best af/mf primes in the 80-200 range. Although Nikkor's 200/F4 micro is even sharper, but hey it's a prime and not a F2.8. Beautiful build quality.
I'm getting tired of all the reviewers who keep nagging about the size , weight and price of these types of zooms, building a fast constant aperture tele zoom requires a lot of large glass to control it's distortion to achieve the excellent optical performance it has. This is a professional lens designed for a pro or a prosumer who needs it's specifications. If you don't truly need the F2.8 aperture then buy the 70-300 ed lens so you can stop complaining about it's size and price and start using film that's a stop or two faster.

Strength:

sharpest fastest focusing zoom lens i have ever used pricey but you get what you pay for smooth operation great with afi convertors

Weakness:

heavy, long, expensive,
large filter size (all come with the territory though)!!!

simply the best 80-200mm zoom that there is loads of ed glass sharp across the frame at any aperture
no hunting of autofocus whichever body you use no internal torque slap as with the older 80-200mm f2.8d a/f 20x16 blow ups look superb i cannot see that there can be a better lens of this type at any price!!! worth every penny of what i payed for it tohugh if money is an object the older non afs version is pretty dammn good too used with an 2x afi convertor you get a still very very sharp 160-400 f5.6 with really slick autofocus thats what i did and i haven't missed the long lenses one bit!
