Strength:

sharp at all apertures, and critically sharp from f4 to f16. rugged not ostentatious like some Canon lenses, but looks really good

Weakness:

would like hypersonic focusing, but not worth all the extra bucks

Just an incredible lens, with great detail even at 2.8, a really solid build, and a practical tripod mount that does the job. Focuses swiftly on F100 and N90s.

Customer Service

none Just as an aside, my brother-in-law shoots exclusively Canon, and he loves them, but has had four different cameras malfunction six different times.

Wow, the proof is in the slides. I got my slides back from our cruise in Alaska. I got to use my 80-200 2.8D (tripod collar) and 20-35 2.8D. These lenses just kick butt. I can't believe how sharp the images are, even at F2.8. I can't say enough good things about this lens. Simply buy one and use it LOTS!

Strength:

The glass; color, contrast sharpness. When When I really want the best portrait type images, this is the lens I always turn to. With the F5, focus is fast and accurate. I don't mind the slight focus noise.

Weakness:

None for my use.

Purchased this lens five years ago with an F5. I have many other lens, including AFS versions, that give latitude from micro(macro for non Nikon)to wildlife to landscape and almost anything else. This lens is by far the best I have used For portraits, expecially with the Kodak Portra color negs.

Strength:

Sharp, well build, and fast apreture.

Weakness:

Yea-right for the price NONE. Some say slow focusing, but %85 of the time when shooting action I use manual focusing!

Sharp, Sharp, Sharp, truly great lens, it's good everywere. I have used this lens for 3 years, and i have shot mostly sports/action with it. With the action shots the quality was fine. But one day a friend ask me to shoot some head-shots of her. I used this lens for the 80-105 range. The pic's were toooo sharp, too clean for head-shot, I was blown away, I never knew this lens was that good! This lens also works great as a manual focus lens on my F3 & FE2 The bottom line is, yes it's old, yes it's heavy, and yes it's slow, but the image is what's importain and it don't get any better than this!!!!

Strength:

Very well built like a pro lens should be. Stable and well balanced on tripod collar (heavier than the AFS version). A little smaller and lighter (as well as less expensive) than the AFS version as well. Focuses almost as quick on an F100.

Weakness:

Can't think of one. Personally, it should be a heavy lens.

A pro lens in every respect. Great images even wide open and very sharp throughout the whole range. I don't do any kind of scientific testing, but my chromes shot with this lens have "the look". This review is for the two-touch version with tripod collar.

Strength:

Terrific distortion performance at all field angles at f/2.8. I've seen virtually no evidence of vignetting or coma at the extremes of field. Top notch optical design and execution

Weakness:

Not really a weakness...but with wide open aperture the hood is a definite must.

An absolutely first rate lens in all respects; sharpness, distortion (lack of), AF speed (no comparison to non AFS), AF accuracy (high).

Customer Service

I'm a californian, and have nothing but good things to say about the Torrance facility.

Man, this lens pops! People who see my pics made with this glass and my 20-35mm f/2.8 (my other go-to) can't stop commenting on how sharp the images are. A lot of folks find this kind of focal range and speed ideal for sports, and I wouldn't disagree. However, I find this lens invaluable for portraits. I get such great contrast, sharpness, and color. The shallow depth of field is great for head shots, too. Sometimes I over-use wide open apertures, though, and I have had to learn to stop-down preview when I have multiple subjects who are not in the same plane of focus. GREAT lens. (I have the later two-ring tripod collar version.)

Strength:

Everything about this lens is great.

Weakness:

It's a little hard to to remove the lens cap with the shade on, how's that for nit picky. No real weaknesses.

I bought this lens to take pictures of my kids playing sports and performing in concerts. Most of these events take place in poorly lit gyms and theaters. I really wanted to get these shots without a flash, and I wanted to get close. I really had to think hard about dropping all that jack for a lens, but I bought it and matched it up with my N80 and couldn't be happier. I'm getting shots I never got before, with a quality my old Tamron zoom can't touch. The focus is very fast even in low light situations. The lens rarely hunts, it's really all its cracked up to be. It's a little heavy but not unreasonable(I mainly shoot it handheld). Do yourself a favor and get this lens you will not be disappointed. You will even get great shots even with 1600 speed film up to 4x6 prints.
