Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 Aspherical 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

This f/2.8 lens sets a new standard for all zooms. Its unusually large maximum aperture is made possible by an extra-wide aspherical lens to provide higher optical performance in a number of ways … including effective anti-flare features and crisp-to-the-edge images. An internal focusing mechanism allows the front of the lens to remain stationary and to easily accommodate specialty filters, such as polarizing filters.

Strength:

Came with a lens hood! AF is somewhat fast So-So optics F2.8 really good for lowlight photos Heavy enough to be a paperweight

Weakness:

So-So optics (Sharpness inconsistent) Large/bulky 72mm filters cost more than 58's Zooming not smooth loud AF

Check seller reviews before buying anything! I had a not so pleasant experience with my dealer. I wanted a Canon EF lens 28-105 USM but was shipped the wrong lens. I said "what the heck? it's got some nice aperature ranges, I'll try it out for a couple of days." So I pranced about merrilly shooting anything anywhere anytime that I could with my Canon d30. I was somewhat disappointed at the image quality, even though the larger aperature helped for lowlight/indoor shots. I had a tough time getting a sharp image - some where sharp, some weren't. Aside from that, i had a hard time finding filters locally that would fit this 72mm dia monster. The zoom is quite nice and AF is somewhat fast, even though louder than Canon's USM. Zooming in and out isn't smooth (sticks?), but at least it came with a lens hood. I'm sure this sigma lens has strengths somewhere, but for me I guess the most important thing that mattered was consistant image clarity/sharpness. SO rather than rationalizing ways of keeping the lens, I ended up returning it for a canon EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM. Results were surprisngly better (i thought people were exagerating, but i guess not).

Strength:

nice looking ZOOM RANGE IS EXELLENT

Weakness:

average to low sharpness under 6.7 unacceptable vigneting in the corners u can get totally black corners taking pictures of snow.... significant zoom creep, annoying 72mm diameter, not good on F65, F80, F100

this was the first "outbrand" lens i have bought for my f65 and f50. Previously using the lans from the camera kits - 28-80g and 35-80AF, i was expecting the true upgrade from the sigma 28-105 2.8-4 lens, and finally the disappointment was as big as the expectations... i have read alot of reviews on few lens in this range, in this and other sites. after a long thinking this was the lens of my choice, and all those points that made me decide to bye it, just drop me down. first of all i got a terrible, totally unacceptable vigneting at almost all stops, with the wide open aperture. this made my as furious as i never been. u got used to the perfect pictures quality that i was getting with my $100 28-80g lens. the sharpness of this sigma "thing" was also below average, at least comparing to the previously mentioned g zoom. after about 5 rolls, i got rid of the lens, and pretty happy cos i got the full return of my money in the store, so they got many point on my "count" for them... soon i am going to try tamron 24-135, hopefully... last thing.. i know that the reson for sigma's low prices is the low QC, so i am sure somebody is happy with this lens.. but what is the chance for that... afteral, we dont have to pay more money for just BRAND NAME... ITS ALWAYS SOMETHING REAL STANDING AFTER IT....

Strength:

Pretty sharp lense, large aperture, CHEAP, nice colours.

Weakness:

Build quality, focusing that makes itself heard.

What can I say ? A good lense at a stupendous price. It is sharp, has a very useful zoom range, unheard off F2.8 aperture at this price range. The focusing ring feels a little cheapo though, but gets the job done with similar gusto. I dont believe in paying twice the price for a well damped, teutonic feeling focusing ring. Focusing "hunts" a little, but what the heck, gets the job done as well. The zoom ring can be a tad inconsistent in its feel... but still functions perfect. Hesitate no further, if you do not need ultra fast and quiet focusing.

Strength:

2.8 D lens fast AF good color. no vignetting from the hood when at 28mm. Dirt Cheap... specially used

Weakness:

hood is cheap abs plastic. Hodd isnt marked for quick mounting to the lens body. (I use the "Made in Japan" printed on the hood as reference)

for the price this lens cant be beat. large apature and very quick AF (nikon n90s)as far as picture quality goes. I ran a direct comparison between this and my 80-200 nikon lens on the same roll. Kodak gold 200(film of choice...no refrigeration, long shelf life) and did not see and noticable difference in either color or clarity. and the hue was neglegibly bluer with the nikon lens..very acceptable. with photoshop anything is possible :-). I cant comment on durability I seldom need a 28mm lens. but the lens body appears to be well constructed. For the size and price a 4+ lens and worthwhile addition to your lens case.

Strength:

price, relatively large aperatures for the price, light weight, compact, good/moderate photo quality

Weakness:

picture quality not the best, but for the price what the hell do you expect!!

I did not have very high expectations with this lens as the price was very low. To my surprise I have come away with many very good quality images from it and have definitely got more than my money's worth. If you are expecting high end quality, this is not the lens for you. But if you seek an affordable lens that more than aptly does the job than I recommend this lens.

Strength:

Wide aperture was helpful when shooting Sensia 100. Autofocus worked well. Contrast was excellent. A sharp lens.

Weakness:

Slight vignetting at 28mm with sunshade.

I purchased this lens for my Nikon N90S to take on a trip to Europe. I used the lens almost exclusively and got excellent results. I was shooting a mix of Kodak Portra 400VC and Sensia 100. Contrast was excellent. I made about 250 exposures.

Strength:

Nice weight and balance on the EOS Elan 7E. That "extra" f-stop! Fit and finish are very good. Great lens hood. Focuses smoothly and quickly.

This is the updated version of this lens, allowing full operation with the Canon EOS Elan 7/7E. This lens has proved to be exceptionally sharp. Unlike other reviews, I find no appreciable vignetting at the wide end, and good sharpness at the long end. I would like to let folks know that many of today's autofocus zooms are not true parfocal zooms, but are, in fact, varifocal zooms. In order to get a truly sharp photo, you must focus at the zoom length you will be using for the photo -- if you re-zoom without re-focusing, you risk unsharp results (yes, your camera will still take the photo, because it was sharp when you originally focused. Only releasing the shutter button and re-focusing works). This is true for many, if not most, autofocus zooms sold today, although it is not commonly discussed. Try this and see if your photos improve.

Strength:

Price Size Wide aperature Good auto focus Works well with all of my EOS bodies (some Sigma lenses do not)

Weakness:

Vignetting at 28mm

This is a great lens for the money if you don''t absolutely need the 28mm side. It looks and feel solid and works surprisingly well in low-light. To me, the best thing is that the DOF button on my Elan 7 works with this lens. This is the 4th Sigma lens I have bought and the first one where the DOF will work with this body. All of them work with my EOS 1n.

I shoot weddings with the Canon 28-70 2.8L and a friend came along as an assistant with an A2 and 28 -105 Sigma. When I got the pix back I couldn''''t tell the difference!! I tried the canon 28-105 and it seemed soft to me. I use it for wedding receptions at F5.6 mostly. I love this lens!

Elan 7 Users!!!!!!! Go here! http://www.sigmaphoto.com/Html/news/News.htm Now, let me start off by rolling my eyes at those that by this lense and cry that it is not as good as their primes or other 6 or 7 hundred dollar lenses. Thats like complaining about buying a Sidel violin for $400 and complaining that it doens''t compare to the Strad that you played at the Smithsonian. Spare us. Now, I have tried to take pictures at all focal lengths, and I have noticed very little degredation. I have shot some incredibly close shots of my girls. I have only a UV filter and await the day I can afford a circular filter, but right now the lense hood will do. It is heavy and metal where it needs to be metal and plastic where it needs to be plastic. Fits snuggly with my Canon Elan 7 andis quick and very quiet. It''s not a 28-200, but you still can get a nice DOV with 105. As others have said, blurring with this lense is most likely a result of YOU. Is your shutter speed to slow??? are you taking picture in the dark???? Or low lit situations???? I took one bad picture that made my wife look fat . . . to be honest I am not sure why . . .but who knows. Other wise. . . I''d get another Sigma lense.

Customer Service
