Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM 35mm Zoom

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Sigma's new Hyper Sonic Motors (H.S.M.) provide silent, responsive autofocus action with Canon, Sigma, and now Nikon AF cameras. Strength:

Build quality Picture quality is awsome! AF doesn't hunt around VERY Sharp

Weakness:

Tripod collar location can make it hard to zoom at times.

I bought this lens because I needed a lens to go between my 28-70 2.8 and my 135-400. The other reason I bought it was I needed a zoom I could use in low light situations. Some of my best action shots have been with this lens. It is very sharp throughout the zoom range. I also did some portraits last night and at F8 they were perfectly sharp. The build is solid, and feels like it was built to last a very long time. I've compared some shots I took with this lens with some that I shot with my cousins Nikon 70-200ED, and he could tell which lens shot which picture.

Strength:

Sharp, much cheaper than the Canon.

Weakness:

A little heavy, need time to get used to it.

I have owned this lens for a relatively short time, and comparing the photos from this lens to my Canon 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8, it's very promising. It will take a bit of getting used to 200mm f2.8, focusing needs to be spot on otherwise it won't be sharp where you want it! The focus drops off very fast at 200mm! It's definitely very sharp from 2.8 up, judging from 8 x 12 prints. The focus speed is fractionally slower than usm, but nothing to cry about.

Strength:

fast lens, cheap (relatively), sharp, looks good, as it's not white it does not attact so much attention

Weakness:

lens to camera mount moves more than I would like but another canon lens does the same

the sigma lens is heavy but it is a large lens and shuld not be compared to the canon f4 70-200 L. with a monopod attached to it's lens it's well balanced. produced sharp images from 2.8 up. if you want to shoot sports and can't afford the canon f2.8 then buy this over the canon f4 70-200. there is no comparison

Strength:

ALL.But in general it has sharp sharp sharp super resolution very little distortion good details fast fast fast(HSM) good size of filters (77 mm),good bokeh, good contrast and its also good built/made (in japan) although it lays good in the hand_good design all over.,comes with a nice HOOD/Back pack too.FAIR price-!! Good work SIGMA.

Weakness:

Black(In sunny places HUH?) but in some countries is has its advantages its NOT white then...aka...*LOL* well its dificult to make all happy!?..

Let me tell you this; This is one of the worlds best zoom lenses no matter what!I have tried many types and brands but this one beats them all in this focal range, theres something magic about the pics you get. This matters both for digital and analogue, From 80-180 mm the sharpness and resolution, details is astonshing all the way between F 4 and 5,6 ;and worth every penny, better than anything. The details and lack of distortion makes it a true winner to work with in every aspect of true photographic work i use very little time In PS and when i develop films in my lab. Contrast and >bokeh> is significant and brutally good ;often i cant see the difference between pics taken with this Sigma and fixed focus lens. Its that good. In short; No matter what i recommand this lens without any reservation and hesitation on any new Canon camera i tested both digital and analogue from both Canon D 1 series(DSLR and analogue) as well as the D60,D10 ,D rebel(D300)D20,D1 ,D1 mk 2 etc..It works and seems to have no back focus or front focus probs at all. As i work for a local news paper for the time being my editors is demanding and he is always impressed with the pics we get from this pearl. So whether youre are a Prof photographer or happy amateur give this lens a chance. Chr M Fisker.

Strength:

F2.8 light fulltime manual focusing Filter size very fast quiet focusing

Weakness:

tripod ring gets in the way of the zoom ring if you leave it on to hand hold.It won't go on the other way around because of the battery grip on my eos3,5 and 50e camra bodys

WOW read the reviews and thought it would be good but not l glass good. This lens is definitly as good as the canon 70-200 2.8 l but without the cost. Super quiet and fast focusing and sharp especially at the longer focal end.Great pictures can be acieved from the largest apatures down. Light for a lens of this type would recomend this lens to anyone.

Solid build, Images are sharp with good color and contrast. Price

Weakness:

Excellent Lens! The focus is fast, quiet and the lens stays the same length when you zoom. It is sharp 70mm to 200mm. I love this lens. The build quality is excellent and the price is several hundred less than the canon 70-200mm f/2.8

Strength:

image quality, low aperture, price, finish of lens

Weakness:

zoom control difficulty of operation, weight (if its critical)

I purchased this lens to try and accomodate my interest in football photography.Inevitably given when games in this country are played there is always limited light available. Originally, I went for the 75 - 300 image stabilised lens but found that a/ the image stabiliser was no good for what I needed and b/ the highish 4.5 to 5.6 aperture range pushed my iso up the scale resulting in less than appealing results. This lens outstrips easily the cheaper but Canon badged lens easily. True its only a 200 mm but the magnification factor of the eos 10d pushes it right up to around 300mm anyway. Initial tests have been really positive - yes its heavy but i would rather have that and be assured of quality. I have used it for football pics from f2.8 through to f8 with really good results. I am very happy with the lens although the zoom barrel does take some getting used to when the tripod or monopod is attached to the lens as it gets in the way a bit. Nicely finished, good case and a nice hood. I like the matt look of the lens which is understated but professional. Well done Sigma, why didnt I buy this before the canon and save a packet?

Strength:

Fast Sharp Excellent build quality Best tripod mount included.

Weakness:

Maybe would be nice if the hood was permanently attached? Can't think of anything else.

Bought this lens back in December of 1998. Can't say enough good about it. Probably the best quality lens Sigma makes. Fast, sharp and quality built. Front filter does not turn so you can use Cokin Filter System easily.

Customer Service

Sent to Sigma for upgrade on July 12, 2004. Received back on Aug.11, 2004 at no charge. Was cleaned and new upgrade chip put in it.

Strength:

Very good build quality, super optics, fast and quiet focus, tripod mount.

Weakness:

heavy but it is a f2.8 tele-zoom.

This is a fantastic lens, tack sharp at all apertures and focal lengths,Flare no problem excellent hood supplied also comes in a nice case. Focusing is ultra fast and silent thanks to the hsm. Non rotating front element so useing filters is not a problem. This is a true pro lens from sigma and a good bit cheaper than canon and nikons versions and probably just as good. Its a nice change to have a lens what you can use wide open without the loss in sharpness.

Strength:

Price, sharp pics, great feel

Weakness:

weight.

This is an extremely competent lens. For the price (half of Canon), you just can't go wrong. It has become my favourite lens for just about any purpose. Even with the 2x teleconverter, you don't notice any difference until you get beyond 350mm. It just re-enforces my belief that prime lenses are not always worth the price. The HMS is quiet and quite fast. This was the lens that brought me back to Sigma and now all my glass is F2.8 sigma.
