Strength:

cheap, crispy, sharp, contrsty, macro capability,

Weakness:

Sample to sample wariation. If you think you have bad one, sell it or return it give it to second chance. If you find one this lens give you a lot of dillema.

Mine was good sample after buy and sell three times. thank for refund policy in ritz camera. Believe me this lens gave me a lots of dillema. The lens produce one the best technically super image onto my slide projector. some time this even beat my so called sharpest 35m prime lens. 100mm/2.8 macro maxxum on normal range, 85mm/1.4 AFD Nikkor. happy dillema any way. amazing macro working distance has so many potential in generaal macro work and in portrait work. Bottom line? Mine was so good but I can't recommend it because of sigma poor quality control.

Strength:

Fairly sharp for a consumer grade lens.
Close focus at 300mm great for butterfly photography.
Metal construction

Weakness:

Very poor design.
Noisy, slow focusing.
Incompatible with EOS 3

Nice lens for use on butterflies, as it allows good reproduction ratios at reasonable working distances. Fairly sharp optics, for a consumer lens.

I was entirely satisfied with the perfomance of the lens. It was the actual handling of the lens that let it down. The focus was slow and noisy, and the lens extended and rotated as it focused. I quickly grew tired of the slow focusing, having been used to my Canon 80-200 USM (the cheapy one). I decided that a new canon USM lens was required, and having acquired a 300 F4L IS and 1.4X tc in the meantime, I went for the Canon 70-200 F4L.

For the money I paid for the lens, I'm not going to complain too loudly, but if I'd paid full retail price, I'd have felt cheated. If you use Canon EOS, do yourself a favour and buy the 100-300 USM or the 70-200 F4L, as you'll be much happier with either of these lenses.

Strength:

Good price for the quality of the lense.

Good up until 250-300mm, pictures below this focal length are very sharp.

*used w/ Minolta XTsi

Weakness:

Terrible at 300mm, pictures are not sharp at all.

AF tends to hunt in low light

*used w/ Minolta XTsi

Excellent lense for 70-200mm range, however, if you can spend more, get the Sigma 100-300mm or 50-500mm...

Strength:

Very sharp lens from 70-300mm.
Light, great for travel.
Well priced.
Best 70-300mm around.

Weakness:

Rotating front end.
Slow on Canon.

A very good lens in this class. In good lighting produces very crisp and contrasty pics rivalling my Nikon 80-200 lens. Optics are very good and focus is good on F100. Slow on Canons due to internal motor of lens.
Would be nicer if HSM.

Strength:

Good value for the price, Neat macro feature

Weakness:

Easy to break lens cap, found it easier to just use polarizer to protect lens

A good choice for a dependable lens that is of decent quality and value for the price. Would be a welcome addition to any beginner's lens collection.

Strength:

Fairly wide range of zooming. Not heavy to carry all around.

Weakness:

Lens cap can easily drop off. Slow focusing

Easy to carry and good enough for this price range. Image quality is OK. Not practical for macro purposes, it does have 1/2 macro capability, though.

Strength:

ITS INEXPENSIVE FOR WHAT YOU GET.

Weakness:

WILL NOT FOCUS INDOORS

FOR UNDER $300 YOU GET A GREAT PICTURE (ie SHARP AND CLEAN. I ALSO LIKE THE MACRO CAPABILITY AND HAVE HAD FUN WITH IT (WOULD HAVE TO BUY TWO LENSES FROM CANON TO GET THIS). AS I'VE SAID I'M NEW AND AT THE PRICES OF SOME "GOOD" LENSES I CAN USE THIS ONE TO FIND OUT WHAT I REALLY LIKE TO SHOT AND IF THIS ISN'T ENOUGH THAN THEN SELL MY ORGANS LATER TO GET THE BEST...

Strength:

moderate weight, wide range, macro capability, inexpensive

Weakness:

AF hunts at 300mm. Need to manual focus in low light. Lens sticks when zooming from 200-300mm.

This is a decent consumer grade telephoto lens with takes sharp photos. The macro is fun to use.
