Strength:

Super color rendition. Very sharp lens.

Weakness:

Noisy. Not the fastest focus. About the same as the Nikons.

Good buy for the money. I'm always surprised by the accurate color and good contrast. This is a keeper.

Strength:

Sharp, light, very good value for the money. If I only take one lens with me, this is the one. I often carry a 25mm extention tube and a 1.4x teleconverter when I do this. The extention tube will give me approx. 1:2 at 105mm, albeit with a rather short working distance. The AF teleconverter does not seem to degrade the images very much, however AF is not reliable beyond 4.5 as indicated in the viewfinder, so I usually just manual focus.

Weakness:

Build quality about average for the price. Will vignette at 28mm if you forget and try to stack your polarizer on top of your UV filter(of course, none of us ever do this--right?).

If you don't need a lense in this range with a constant 2.8 aperture(and with todays faster films, many of us don't), I don't think you can go too far wrong with this lense. Try it. You might like it. I sure do.

Customer Service

Had a Tamron teleconverter repaired once. Service was excellant, price reasonable and it looked almost brand new when I got it back. I was very satisfied.

Model Reviewed: AF28-105mm F/4-5.6 (IF)

Strength:

Decent color rendition, internal focusing allows easy use of Polarizing filters

Weakness:

Lacks sharpness, slow focusing. f5.6 aperture at 105mm too slow. Big lens considering it's slow maximum aperture (72mm filter).

I bought this lens to replace the 35-80 kit lens, but size of the lens and mediocre sharpness really made it a disappointment...especially compared to the 28-105 Canon. Even the Canon 35-80 lens is better.

great value, you're getting what you pay for

Weakness:

Not quite as fast a lens as I would like, but I would have to pay a lot more for a faster lens

A very, very good lens for the money, autofocus is fast

Strength:

Good price; convenient zoom range; metal mount; good lens hood; good colors!

Weakness:

Not very sharp, especially around the edges; it isn't built very well- sometimes the lens shakes withing the outer focusing rings; very noisy; slow to focus

The bottom line is, I bought this lens to go along with the new N80 I just bought. I'm only a high school student and I am getting interested in photography and photojounalism. I wanted something cheap, and this lens was and is the best in the price range. Consider the Canon and Nikon zooms (28-80) which are about the same price. They are not nearly as good as this lens. The Canon and Nikon 28-105 models are more expensive. So this lens is a good buy if you aren't looking for top of the line lenses.

Customer Service

I haven't had to use it except for the rebate which they promptly sent me

Strength:

Great price, well-rounded features for the beginning photographer, flexible

Weakness:

Slow to focus, the IF is a bit noisy compared to some of their other lenses

I have a Tamron 70-300 with their LD glass and I find that it is a bit sharper on the similiar ranges. I would recommend just getting the excellent 28-300 and kill two birds with one stone. It is a much more flexible lens with better AF response and a sharper lens. It is worth the price. Notwithstanding, it is definately a strong contender in its class, and should be considered for any beginners.

Strength:

Versality, Clarity, AF feature, convenience.

Weakness:

at 28mm f4 isn't quite fast enough. At 105 f 5.6 is just adequate.I would like the lens to be faster.

I am a 2 1/4 landscape photographer, but I use a Cannon EOS for snapshots. This is the lens I leave on the cannon. My other lenses are Cannon 50mm and Tamron 100-300. With the 28-105 on the camera most of the time, nary a situation goes by that I can't accomodate. The clarity is well beyond acceptable and could even be considered excellent (I have some polorized shots of the Grand Canyon that would roll your socks up and down). I have this camera and lens attached to an older Sunpak 522 w/bracket. If I put the camera on auto everything then I have the most versatile point and shoot I can imagine.(flash photo's need to go either munual or aperture priority because the flash isn't dedicated). All in all I have this lens along with a 100-300, and a 50mm (because of it's speed and close up abilities) and the flash giving me a complete system that will handle any situation, with quality, all for about $600. Without a doubt the 28-105 is the workhorse of the system and I couldn't be more pleased.
