Strength:
Compact size, image quality, construction.
Weakness:
Limited closeup ability. I simply love this lens. I shoot 35 to 4x5 so I demand quality in every component. I was a little nervous before purchasing this lens, and now I am amazed at the detail and resolution from it. If you are not getting sharp images, either you don''t have the Super, or you have something wrong with your camera/lens. Images in the viewfinder are clear, and bright. (focusing screens vary from Mfr to Mfr.) I use mine on an N90S and would not trade it for anything. As far as closeups, it is limited, but then I use a macro lens, which is really a better option for quality when doing macro work. I will say that it is just as sharp at its closest distance as it is at its longest. I will give up true macro in lieu of quality elsewhere in the focal range. Customer Service I have been fortunate not to need it. Similar Products Used: Tamron 28-135SP(the best) Tamron 28mm, Tamron 85-210, Nikkor 50. |

This is a wonderful lens, lightweight, covers a huge range and great sharpness and quality
Weakness:
Of course you can also get something better, but the 5.6 can be high at 200mm. The lens diameter makes it very hard and expensive to get lenses like polarizers, and others I have used this lens over the last 8 years when it first came out. It is truely worthy of all the awards it has received. The newer models incorporated some advanced features that I missed on mine: distance meter, closer focusing distance. Its small size and light weight make it easy to carry along. I only used a 50mm in the dark, every thing else was left up to my Tamron. Wonderful. Customer Service took them a time to answer and then they didn't have the close up lens for the earlier versions Similar Products Used: None |

I was surprised by the sharpness. I write for a four-color monthly magazine but occasionally take my own pictures. We have to have sharp photos, and this lens is sharp enough at all ranges. Additionally, this lens is light and small. It is the ONLY lens I take when I travel.
Weakness:
The lens hood does not lock on well. It got a little crooked once and appeared in several wide-angle shots. The construction is plastic but has held up well so far. Zoom action is not the smoothest--it jumps a little during the final half-inch of extension. This hasn't bothered me during use. Obviously, I wish it was faster than 5.6 at 200mm. I shoot 100 ISO film that is preferred by the magazine I work for. Sometimes I wish it would go a little wider than 28mm. However, if large museum-print quality is your goal, buy a lens that costs a lot more. It is sharp enough for magazine work. Meets the standards for publishing. Customer Service Haven't needed it. Strength:
This lens has relatively fast focusing on my Rebel 2000, it is rather light, it has a HUGE zoom range, it has pretty good contrast and is very sharp throughout the zoom range.
Weakness:
When using a built in flash, there is signifigant vignetting when at the wide end of the zoom range because the lense is very large in diameter. This large diameter (72mm) causes filters to be a bit expensive. I love this lense. This is the main lense I use for my canon and I love it. This lense balances perfectly on the rebel 2000 (I have the BP-200 installed as well). The zoom range is great for when I shoot sporting events and the sharpness and contrast are good for general fine art pictures. It has a nice blur at the wide aperture which handles simple portraits nicely. I mainly shoot black and white but the color reproduction is excellent. The 28mm end is wide enough for nice landscapes and the 200mm got me close enough to some wild animals on a recent hiking trip all without switching lenses!! For the price you pay for these lenses you cant beat the versatility. The lense has the twist zoom rather than the push/pull which was a little stiff when I got it but has broken in nicely and avoids the lense dropping when pointed at the ground like the Vivitar I tested did. The only drawback is that the 72mm diameter makes investing in creative filters a bit pricey and causes dark edges on pictures when shooting with built in flashes at the wide end of the zoom range. Strength:
Very good contrast, sharpness and color for such a wide zoom range. Definitely the best out of 3rd party 28-200mm's
Weakness:
Corner darkening at telephoto end with when using fully open aperture I have used two models of this lens: one from circa 1992 (model 71D) and one from 1999, and they are two very different lenses in terms performance. The latest has a much shorter focusing distance (the shortest of it's class) and adds LD glass and internal focusing. Reading the reviews posted here I get the impression that some are definitely of earlier model lenses eg. sliding barrel when pointed up/down, (which, by the way, did not happen even with my 1992 lens). This is a great travel lens when you need to have great shots with good sharpness and contrast and not have to lug about many of your precious costlies. It is, in opinion, hands down superior to the sigma 28-200mm. Plus, Tamron lenses retain a better re-sale value, and this particular lens has sold well over a million units, further lending it authentication. Customer Service Never needed it. Strength:
Wide range; good for everything from relatively wide angles to telephoto. Very solid construction and appearance. A great product, especially considering the relatively low price.
Weakness:
Very slow focusing on my N70; marked decrease in ability to focus in low light situations. Image quality subjectively not quite as good as the 24-120 Nikon, but about the same as the Sigma 28-70. Note that this assessment is based on hand-held photos; it is possible the lens would do better if my shots had been tripod mounted. This is a lot of lens for the price. I like the fact that the lens hood is included. The construction is solid. The extreme range is very handy. The appearance is good. The image quality, subjectively, did not seem to be as good as my Nikon 24-120, but overall it was still very good. I have some 8x10s I made with this lens and they are quite satisfactory. I recommend the lens as a solid buy. You can see some of the photos I shot with this and other lenses on my web site at http://members.aol.com/jhbanda/index.html. Customer Service Not needed.
