    Strength:

    - Price at 1/4 of L lens - f2.8 straight from 28-75mm - nice at f2.8 / sharp at f4.0 - light weight - fast focus

    Weakness:

    none so far

This lens is nice. If you consider the price, it's superb. I used to own tamron 28-300 XR lens and hate it because of the soft pictures and I didn't dare going back to Tamron. However, after I read the reviews here, I decided to give it a shot. The lens' build is pretty nice. Not as solid as Canon 24-70L (of course) but it's feel quite nice. Another plus is it's weight only 1 lb compare to 2.x lb for 24-70L lens. I test it with my 10D, and at f2.8 on both end, it gives an acceptable nice pictures. At f4.0, the pictures are very sharp. Compare to my Canon 50mm f1.4, at f2.8, Canon noticable outperform Tamron (sure thing !!), but the result are the same at f4.0. (At least to my eyes.) The focus is quite fast but not very quitet (again I compare it to my Canon 50 f1.4) Last but not least, it uses 67mm filter. Get along well with my Canon 70-200 f4 forming my favourite light weight set. ^_^ Conclusion: With a price around 1/4 of Canon 24-70L, sharp, light weight, quite fast focus, and well build, I highly recommend it.

    Strength:

Resolution is O.K., but not as good as Canon L-lens

    Weakness:

Fatal flaw in yellow cast and color rendering.

I bought this lens due to good reviews in this forum, except only one review in this forum called this lens "JUNK". After I did my test, I want to second that lonely review. This lens has fatal flaw in yellow cast, and it gets worse in low light condition. I posted this problem at other lens forum. It turnd out everyone knows it and I am the only fool who does not.

    Strength:

Build, fairly "instant" focus ability, good contrast, and great sharpness.

    Weakness:

    can't think of any

I bought this lens 100% because of the reviews on this site. While I would never compare it to Canon's 28-70mm "L" lens, this Tamron lens is GOOD. I've always believed in the shorter zooms(28-70)vs longer(28-200, 28-300, etc.)because, optically the shorter zooms tend to be better- in general. The lens focuses well, has a good weight, doesn't use large filters(i.e. 77mm), and is very sharp and contrasy. Strength:

    - SHARP! - Excellent contrast and color - Fast - Durable - Light Weight

    Weakness:

    - AF is noticably slower than L series lenses, but still fairly fast.

I am not sure how anyone has had a bad experience with this lens. I was looking to upgrage my Canon 28-135 IS USM lens (pretty good to start with). I own a 10D and have considered buying the 28-70L but for $1200 I figured I would try this one first. I have been extremely pleased. I have found the lens to be fast, tack sharp, light and very well built. I decided to write this review after dropping it 4 feet onto asphault at the bronx zoo. The only damage is a small scratch on the hood, otherwise it performs as new. In my opinion it is unbeatable at anywhere near its price.

    Customer Service

Not needed despite dropping it onto pavement.

Compared against 28-70 L (borrowed from relative). In my opinion (as well Pop Photography) both these lenses produce outstanding results. The L definetely focuses faster, Both are tack sharp with excellent contrast and color, the Tamron is much lighter and easier to live with as a main lens (oh and it costs 1/4 the L).

    Strength:

Perfect performance Sharp all over already at f/2.8 low weight low cost fast focus

    Weakness:

maybe the build quality, but for a quarter of the price of the Nikon it is very good.

The lens is taking razor sharp pictures, performance is even already very good wide open, distortion is low at 28mm. It has low weight and low cost at high performance. The Autofocus is as fast as on my 24-85 AF-S. And I sold the 24-85 AF-S after some days with the Tamron. I wish it would start at 24 instead of 28. The build quality is not like the Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8. But for 25% of the Nikonprice it is very good. The build quality is on parr with the Nikon 24-85 AF-S i.e. The AF-motor is only a little more noisy then the AF-S ones.

    Strength:

    Nothing

    Weakness:

Everything! Not sharp! Give me a break, they say this is a Pro Lens...they have to be kidding because it's no where near it. AF is slow. MF is three thumbs down! Made like a toy and handles like one.

I will sum this up with one word, this product is "Junk". Don't waste your money on this lens! Very cheap product. I received this lens today and shoot 10 pictures and review them and put it back in the box to send back to B&H Photo. I went by the reviews on this site and purchase this lens. Please don't waste your money on this lens.

I traded in the new Nikon 24-120 VR for this Tamron lens. I found that I needed a faster lens for low light conditions and the I have found the Tamron to be great lens. I like it much better than the Nikon lens.`

    Strength:

build quality is good (but not an L) 67mm filter (same as 70-200L/4) good range for film (28-75), wished to be wider

    Weakness:

very soft (ok only after 5.6) a lot of vignetting (ok only after 5.6) zoom is opposite to Canon zoom lenses

After all the positive reviews I've read about this lens I decided to buy it. I used/tested this lens on my 35mm film body Canon Elan 7E. Unfortunately the quality of the pictures was not there. Some people compare this lens with 24-70L/2.8, I don't think that should be the case, I compared it with my 70-200L/4 and 50/1.4. My copy was made in China, but it had also Tamron Japan inscription on it. I've read/heard that some are made in Japan, looks like those are better. Mine was too soft and had too much vignetting, it was starting to be only ok from 5.6 up, but it was never great. Maybe I got a bad copy of this lens, but I'm not willing to try again, I hope/wish that Canon will come out with a 20-100L/4 IS. Conclusion: I returned the lens after 2 weeks.

    Strength:

    • SHARP!!! • Very good performance at f2.8 • Good AF speed • Build quality (better than Canon consumer zooms) • Comes with lens hood • PRICE • SHARP!!!

    Weakness:

    None.

I bought the Canon EOS version of this lens last week and have now finished evaluating the results of tests comparing it to my EF 28-70/f3.5-4.5 Mk II (probably the sharpest consumer zoom lens Canon has ever produced) and 50/f1.8 Mk I lenses. I can sum up my test results with one word,…"WOW!!! The Tamron lens was discernibly sharper than the 28-70 Mk II at all comparable apertures and focal lengths, and especially in the corners at larger apertures. At f4 and higher, the Tamron lens at 50mm was just as sharp as the Canon 50/f1.8 prime. At f2.8, the 50mm prime was just slightly sharper than the Tamron lens, but I had to use a loop to see it. What really impressed me was the performance of the Tamron lens at f2.8 at all focal lengths--it’s quite good! The Tamron lens is pretty well controlled for flare for a zoom lens, but certainly not as resistant as a good prime lens. If there’s a difference in performance between the Tamron 28-75 Di and Canon 24/28-70 “L” zooms, then it may be with respect to contralight performance, I don’t know. It’s clear to me why this lens is so highly rated.

    Strength:

    F/2.8 Price Built quality

    Weakness:

Cheap hood Weight (but better than canon equivalent)

I used this lens on my 10D and I got very good results, it is very sharp from F/4 and above, it is not as good but still ok at F/2.8. Contrast and color rendition are really good. It feels very solid, very good built. Focusing is fast but not as fast and quiet as USM. A F4 seems very close to the sharpness of the canon 17-40 F4 L.
