Strength:

ALL METAL,VERY SHARP FOR 16X20 & 20X24 ENLARGEMENTS ON REALA,VERSATILE "RUBBER NORMAL" LENS.FASTER THAN EARLY 25-50 MF NIKKOR

Weakness:

ALWAYS CHECK THAT FOCUS CLUTCH WHEN USING MF AND AF CAMERAS TOGETHER.

I BOUGHT THIS LENS 1) BECAUSE NIKON DID NOT OFFER THIS RANGE AT THE TIME,2)TO LIGHTEN MY CAMERA BAG AND 3)BECAUSE THE SIGMA VERSION DID NOT SEEM STURDY ENOUGH. ALL AROUND THIS LENS HAS PROVEN TO BE A CLASS ACT. MY COMPETITION HAS YET TO CATCH UP ON THE CLARITY AND SHARPNESS THIS LENS OFFERS. I USE IT FOR STUDIO BRIDAL PORTRAITS, CEREMONIES AND RECEPTIONS AND IT'S FAR LIGHTER THAN THE NIKKOR S VERSION WITH A GOOD PRICE TAG. BY THE WAY....I TEST ALL OF MY LENSES WITH FUJI REALA FILM ENLARGED TO 16X20 AND 20X24...THIS SHOWS ALL THE ACES AND THE PIMPLES IN LENS QUALITY FOR ME.

Customer Service

WAS VERY GOOD AT GETTING LENS TO READ MY N90, THOUGH THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH MY F5T.

Strength:

All Metal body

Weakness:

Dust inside glass
Not much better than Canon 28-105
Stiff Zoom ring

This lens is a piece of crap. Tokina's quality control is next to nothing. While the lens is sharp but at over $400, one should go with Canon 28-105. I purchased this lens from B&H and had to exchanged it a total of 4 times. On the 4th try, I gave up and went with Canon 28-105. The ones I tried all have dust inside them.

Customer Service

None. Excellent with B&H

Strength:

build quality

Weakness:

sharpness
contrast

I purchased one for my Canon 1N-RS from B&H.
The first one was dead out of the box but they quickly replaced it without any fuss.
After 18 months I'm still happy with this lens.
It's no Canon 28-70 'L' but at less than half the price it is a quality alternative.
They can be had for around $300 "like new" on eBay.
My only complaint is sharpness/contrast which can be lack-luster at times - I intend to replace it with a cANON 28-70 'L' in the next year or two.

Strength:

Incredibly sharp and well built. The AF is fast on my F100. I use this lens as my standard to shoot weddings.

Weakness:

None.

This is an incredible lens for the price. It may not be as fast as the new Nikon AF-S 28-70, but it is sharp enough to shoot weddings.

Strength:

Solid build quality, feels good and balances well on my Minolta 9xi

Weakness:

None, but found the auto/manual focus clutch mechanism awkward at first

A well built good performance lens, perhaps getting a little long in the tooth as it does not seem to get such good reviews for its optical performance any more (Beaten by Sigma 28-70 f2.8 EX)

This lens stays on my Minolta 800si most of the time. Great all around people shooter. At 28mm and in the sun be sure to use the hood [supplied with the lens]. You'll love this one.

Strength:

Fantastic lens. Takes an amazing amount of punishment.

Weakness:

None what so ever.

This lens is always on either my N90s or F5. Takes great photos, extremely sharp especially in the F4.5-F8 range. Other ranges are also very good. But the F4.5-8 range may be one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used.
Rather heavy, but it is a fast lens and let's face it, fast lenses are usually big and heavy.
Takes 77mm filters which can be expensive. However, all my favorite lenses take 77mm filters so the size is actually helpful to me.
Cannot stack two or more normal filters without vignetting under 35mm.
Lens hood that comes with it doesn't seem to help much, it's one of the tulip design hoods. Rubber hood is much better. However, the one that comes with the lens is plastic and is good for added lens protection in case you bang the end of the lens against something. (Which I have done before.)
Great finish and very fast autofocusing. I like the way Tokina handles MF/AF. The focus ring slides back and forth for autofocus and manual focus. Slide it forward and it goes into autofocus not matter what setting the focus is in. However, when pulling back from autofocus to manual focus, you must turn the ring to match it up to where it was when it was pushed into autofocus. (Hope that made sense.)
Zoom ring is very smooth, but a little hard to turn. This is probably good since it prevents accidental turning of the zoom.
This was my first experience outside of Nikon lenses and it proved positive enough I purchased another Tokina lens.
