Tokina AT-X 235 AF PRO 20-35mm f/2.8 35mm Zoom

Tokina AT-X 235 AF PRO 20-35mm f/2.8 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The AT-X 235AF PRO lens uses the latest in lens development technology, using 2 (the front and rear) molded, multicoated aspherical elements which are created through a collaboration with Hoya Corporation, the world largest manufacturer of optical glass. This lens also features the exclusive "Focus Clutch Mechanism". As with all the lenses in Tokina AT-X AF series, the AT-X 235 AF PRO is constructed using all aluminum lens barrels and a chrome plated brass mount plate. The lens elements are made of higher quality HLD (high refraction, low dispersion) glass for higher resolution and contrast.

Strength:

Excellent build quality--Sigma could learn alot from these guys! VERY smooth focus and zoom. f 2.8 = bright, easy to focus image Very sharp

Weakness:

Some color fringing in backlit situations

Don''t believe Photodo.com on this one, folks--I have just completed testing against the Tokina 20-35 AF II (a fine lens in itself and rated higher by Photodo than the Pro version). The ATX Pro version of this lens clearly out-resolves the series II lens at 20mm across all aperatures (the Pro lens is sharper wide open than the series II lens at any f stop). At 24mm, they are very similar with the Pro version again winning at 35mm. The series II corner sharpness does not even come close to the PRO. The PRO version shows similar light falloff to the series II lens--clearing up one f stop before the series II (f 5.6 vs. f 8). Flare is fairly well controlled in both lenses, but the PRO lens does seem to suffer a bit from color fringing in strong backlighting situations where the series II lens seems not to have a problem.

Strength:

Price and quality construction.

My first lens suffered from chromatic abberation. The results of a lens test by THK (the importer/distributors) showed contrast at low levels. I did not notice that. However they exchanged the lens for a new one. The new lens is a keeper. It does everything extremely well. No traces of chromatic abberation and it is a bit more contrasty. Focus is quick, and spot on. I use this lens with a Nikon F100.

Customer Service

Slow but always responsive. I'd rate them very good/excellent.

Strength:

Looks nice and inexpensive compared to comparable lenses

Weakness:

Feels more solid than it is.Mine took a fall from 3 feet and broke in half.Turns out that 3 tiny little screws hold the majority of the lenses weight needless to say they are not up to the task.

Image quality is average, build quality is slightly below average.I wouldn't buy another one

Customer Service

Took 4 months to get the lens repaired !! Enough said

Terrific lens..use their whole line from 300 F2.8 ATX to the 17mm ATX in my daily work. The color of the lenses is very satisfying, not too 'hot' or tweaked and not too flat in contrast. Love them.

Customer Service

Tokina has great service..ask for John in repairs out in California...a real pro.

Fine lens only surpassed by the much more expensive Nikkor 17-35.

Smooth, easy to use and fast focusing.

Weakness:

At 20-24mm my lens shows definite chromatic aberation. Some vignetting at 20mm.

I will return this lens to the distributor. Perhaps mine is out of spec...
If they're all like this, I'll stick with Nikkor lenses.

Customer Service

A phone call about my lens was received w/ politness. I was told to return my lens for evaluation.

I've had this lens for a couple of rolls and I am most impressed. I sold my Nikkor 20 2.8 AIS and haven't missed it.

Weakness:

I would have liked the lettering to appear more permanent

I can't imagine that the Nikkor 20 - 35 2.8 could be twice the lens at twice the price. This is a keeper

I've had this lens for over a year and the performance is very, very good. Images are crisp and contrasty. Quick autofocus. When used on a tripod and stopped down to f11 to f16 images are tack sharp. Flare can be a problem as expected with this range of wide angle lens. Lens hood help somewhat. Great optics for a reasonable price tag.
